Operating the Hand Blender
The specially designed blade is for mixing and stirring all kinds of foods, including salad dressings, powdered drink products, and sauces. It is ideal for combining dry ingredients, and can be used to emulsify mayonnaise, too.
This blade mixes and stirs while adding only a minimum of air to your mixture. A gentle up-and-down motion is all you need to make the most flavorful, full-bodied liquid recipes.
Cleaning
Always clean the Smart Stick motor body and blending shaft thoroughly after using.
Remove the blending shaft from the motor body. Clean the motor body only with a sponge or damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners which could scratch the surface. To clean the blending shaft, wash by hand in hot water using mild detergent, or in the dishwasher.

Motor Body - One button (press and hold, not toggle) for power, one button to release the blending shaft, and a reasonably long cord that I do sometimes have to be careful not to dangle in whatever I'm working on. Motor is strong and pretty quiet. (I did still accidentally wake my kids from a nap with it, but it is much quieter than any other blender or food processor I've used.) Motor gets slightly warm after extended use, but nothing worrisome. Light weight and easy to handle.
Blending Shaft - Mates up to motor housing VERY well. I initially tried a friend's immersion blender (don't remember the brand) and had a pretty hard time getting the shaft lined up to where I could attach it to motor housing. No such problem with this one. Sharp blades, blending action sucks food up from the bottom and out through the slits in the sides which seems to circulate whatever I'm blending very well (unlike countertop blenders that sometimes create an air pocket around the blades and need scraped/stirred/etc.) I have been using it a lot lately to whip/froth eggs for omelettes. (Take 2 eggs + 2 egg whites + 1T of milk and blend, then lift/tilt the blender up to the point where it sucks up some air and it will aerate like crazy for some seriously fluffy omelettes!)
Cleaning - Motor housing doesn't usually get dirty during use, but smooth surface should wipe up nicely. Blending shaft cleans VERY easily if cleaned right after use. I haven't let food harden on it, but I imagine it would be quite a bit harder to clean in that case, as the blending shaft itself doesn't come apart. (Getting around the guard to clean the top of the blades might be pretty tricky.)
Beaker - The included beaker works very well in conjunction with the blender and has convenient measuring marks, though when I'm making smoothies I wish it was a bit larger.
Blending Results - Handles soft foods and frozen fruit well, but does not blend fibrous foods nearly as finely as my vitamix. (Plain fruit smoothie = awesome and easy, throw in some kale in for a green fruit smoothie = blend longer and still feel like I have to chew my smoothie a bit.) Not a big problem for me, but if pureeing hard/fibrous foods is your primary use, you will find that this compares unfavorably to a high-speed, high-horsepower countertop blender like a vitamix or blendtech.
Overall, I would recommend this in a heartbeat!
As a new mother I wanted to make my baby's food and found the pitcher blender and the food processor to be *okay* but not terrific for making food into the consistency of puree that I was looking for. (This is for an older infant who is able to handle stuff that hasn't been through a food mill.) On a whim I decided to give this smart stick a shot because I have other Cuisinart appliances that I've had for ages & been really happy with, plus - at least at the time of my purchase - the price was low enough that even if I didn't like it it wouldn't have been a huge loss to just pass it along to someone else.
I loved it immediately. In under a minute, the bowl of steamed fruit (with a bit of water added) was consistently and smoothly pureed. There's only 1 button that you have to hold in to run it and then it shuts off once pressure is removed from it - very easy to operate. I moved on to other fruits and vegetables and have not yet been disappointed. I had worried that making my own baby food at home would be too much of a pain, but this hand blender makes it a snap to do a large batch at once which I then portion out and freeze. It paid for itself in the first month of use in what it saved on buying jars of baby food at the store (especially because I buy only organic stuff for the kiddo).
Then, as long as I already had it, I tried it in a few batches of soup that I made... and wondered how I had gone so long without ever getting one of these before! No more fiddling around with pouring scalding hot soup into the blender in batches (I make a big pot so there are leftovers - quite a juggling act when smoothing it out bit by bit). My mom, who had used a different kind of immersion blender in the past said that this one changed her mind (for the positive) about them - apparently it's much easier to use than others which don't have a guard around the blade, which totally makes sense to me.
Cleanup and storage are also totally easy. The end that touches food pops off with an easy press of a button and it goes right into the dishwasher. It's also small enough so storage isn't a hassle. My husband and I have a verrrrrry small urban apartment with very limited cupboard space, so we really are conscious about each thing that we bring into our home because we don't like clutter and there's therefore no room for extras. Even though that's the case, the appliance part is about as big as my hand so it tucks neatly between larger appliances in our cupboard. The blade fits easily into our cutlery drawer. We already had measuring cups so gave away the one that came with this, but it's a great thing to have too if you need it.
