I own all of the films Christopher Nolan has directed and have seen each one more than once. So, it seemed that what is basically a biopic would be something he wouldn’t be interested in. Of course, he picked a man who isn’t well known by most people today. Although I’m old enough to know who J. Robert Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy, “A Quiet Place Part II”) was, I didn’t know much beyond that he is the acknowledged scientist responsible for developing the atomic bomb that was dropped twice on Japan and the conclusion of World War II.
While Nolan and his co-writers Kai Bird and Martin Sherwin provide a brief look at Oppenheimer's upbringing and days as a student, the meat of the film is after his selection to run the Manhattan Project beginning in the early 1940’s after the U. S. entered the war. What everyone knew was that the science of the day was capable of developing a huge advantage in warfare with a really big bomb.
As played out in the film, Oppenheimer had concerns from the beginning. He agreed to head the project primarily because he knew that if Hitler got the bomb first, he would have no compunction about using it. In order to gather the best scientists, he and his Army General overseer, Leslie Groves (Matt Damon, “Air”), would use their heritage as a deciding factor. Most of the top physicists were Jewish.
In spite of Oppenheimer’s awkwardness at times, he was also something of a ladies' man. In particular, he has an off and on relationship with Jean Tatlock (Florence Pugh, “Don’t Worry Darling”) that gets quite physical on screen. She becomes something of a thorn in his side throughout the movie because she was a card-carrying Communist. As much as the American government wanted to thwart Germany and Japan, they were equally concerned about the growing influence of Stalin and Russia who were in fact allies at the time.
Eventually Oppenheimer will marry Katherine “Kitty” Puening played by Emily Blunt who starred with Murphy in “A Quiet Place Part II.” Blunt doesn’t get a lot of screen time but when she does, she’s very effective. Something of a boozer, Kitty will ultimately be her husband’s strongest defender. A great scene when she testifies for Oppenheimer at a security hearing headed by Roger Robb (Jason Clarke, “The Desperate Hour”).
The movie runs 3 hours long, so there are a lot of characters introduced and a lot going on before even the first bomb (“Trinity”) is tested. One character in particular has a major role and is someone I had never heard about. Lewis Strauss (a nearly unrecognizable Robert Downey Jr., “Avengers: Endgame”) was the head of a prestigious college who was trying to hire Oppenheimer. He was a businessman, a retired naval officer and ultimately the head of the Atomic Energy Commission after the war. His real ambition however was to be in the President’s cabinet. He along with Edward Teller (Benny Safdie, “Licorice Pizza”) wanted to push the development of the hydrogen bomb, more powerful than the A-bomb. But after the destruction of Japan, Oppenheimer was against it. Strauss used his influence to sabotage Oppenheimer’s security clearance as he was obviously still quite influential in the country. A brief and uncomfortable meeting with President Truman (a definitely unrecognizable Gary Oldman, “The Woman in the Window”), Oppenheimer’s future with the U. S. government became clear.
Nolan is a master of confusion in that he can keep you interested in what is going on even if you aren’t sure what is. He almost always uses time shifting scenes which sometimes helps or at least provides some context. This film is fairly cut and dried from a technical standpoint, other than some scientific gobbledygook. The film does jump around a bit but it’s never disconcerting. One case is the security meeting. The other is the testimony before Congress. Both of those events are interspersed and shown in black and white. Yes, there are big bombs exploding, primarily the “Trinity” test which is very effective. We also get some razzle dazzle early in the film providing a non-scientific look at physical science. Nolan and his cinematographer do a great job moving the camera. In particular the close ups of Oppenheimer’s face with those piercing blue eyes give the viewer a look into his thoughts.
There are numerous well-known actors who show up in the movie. Too many to mention here. Every actor is terrific, but I’ll make special mention of Murphy in the key role. Since “A Quiet Place Part II” he’s done a short, a TV series, a video game and a voice over. Things are about to change. Maybe an Oscar. I was also impressed with Downey, Jr. Put him down for a Supporting Oscar and maybe Blunt and/or Pugh for Supporting Actress. This is a great film, probably my favorite of the year so far.
