    Originally, I was a school teacher. One day when teaching my students how plants grow, one was certain that carrots come from the store, not the ground. It dialed me into a disconnect in the understanding of where our food comes from.

    Our memories of youthful garden raids were epic - those crunchy carrots, crisp peas, and deliciously juicy strawberries! Turns out, the actual gardeners had been our parents. As gardening beginners, we were in for a few surprises.

    Reality struck after the little green shoots popped up: it was hard to tell the weeds from the seedlings. That first garden was not the harvesting success we had dreamed of.

    Next, we researched gardening approaches to optimize our space for a bigger harvest and to make weed identification easier. We discovered Square Foot Gardening, but it didn’t match the setup of our garden.

    We didn’t have the raised garden beds for traditional Square Foot Gardening, and our garden plot had an unusual shape - making it impossible to install the square-foot grids required by SFG.

    Instead, we applied the textbook knowledge of Square Foot Gardening to make our seed-spacing templates. Adding sidewalls removed the need for the grids altogether - as the impressions left in the soil became the grid!

    Those first jigs worked so well that friends, family & neighbors asked to borrow our "magical" squares for their gardens. Then our next ah-ha moment happened…we color-coded the numerous jigs into one master template.

This is such a simple yet brilliant gardening tool. So well thought out. My gardening dad was upset he hadn't invented it? This was very easy to use and I love that it comes with a handy chart to tell you how to space some common seeds and starters. Before this I was taking a ruler and marking that way, but now planting goes sooooo much faster! AND everything just looks much nicer as it’s growing in nice little rows and columns. Oh and the little tool for making holes and scooping seeds is very handy with those itty bitty seeds that seem to disappear in your fingers.

Now that we are well into gardening season, I can't say enough good things about this seed square. I'm a new gardener and this tool has made my novice efforts so much better. I have a squarefoot garden so it's perfect. The color coding on this tray works wonderfully with all the planning and strategy for the squarefoot garden. The color coding was my favorite characteristic of this tool because if a vegetable calls for a specific number of plants per square foot, you can easily look to see which spacing (aka color) is best suited for it. It's simple enough that my daughters can help and it adds a fun element to planting. It comes with a dibber and funnel too. The dibber fits perfectly into the marked holes while the funnel is attached. It has measurements on the side to poke holes the proper depth. It also has a seed scoop on the opposite end of the dibber which made it much easier to work with smaller seeds. The funnel turned out to be very useful as well. It's easy to lose seeds, so it's nice that they fell right in to where they needed to go.

New and experienced gardeners may find a "soil blocker" useful as well for your inside spring starters. It's a contraption that punches your moist soil into cubes. There's different size blocks you can get. The one I found had dibber attachments so it prepped the blocks perfectly. It prevents your plants from getting root bound in their containers during the early germination phase because you don't put them in containers. I put the soil blocks in trays under grow lights and bottom watered. Just search "soil blocker".

I planted some seeds this weekend and finally used this Seeding Square that I bought months ago. It seems to be a very handy guide and gives a good visual of how far apart the seeds/seedlings are to be planted.

Only problem is that it seems that this device is intended to for when you have the luxury and good fortune of planting seeds, seedlings, and everything in your garden all at the exact same time. This weekend I planted some seeds. In a couple of weeks, I'll plant seedlings. So if my seeds that I planted this weekend actually sprout by the time I need to use this as a guide when I plant my seedlings, then I'm worried this square will CRUSH my delicate new sprouted seeds when I go to plant the seedlings. And vice versa. If I used this square as a guide to plant my tomato seedlings, and then shortly after (for whatever reason), came back to plant seeds, I would crush or damage my seedlings when I place this square on top to measure. You get what i'm saying?

So it's a great tool to give a visual, but it has it's limitations.

I have 4 raised beds, each are 4’x8’ and I used the square to evenly plant everything and I was able to really maximize the space of each bed. Saved me time and was super easy to use.
