Editorial Reviews
Review
"A work of intense reporting and deep love by Julia Beverly, the founder and often one-woman engine behind Ozone magazine ... it's a virtual ticktock of Pimp C's life, covering his school choir days; his early years as a producer; UGK's success; his drug use; his many squabbles; his criminal history; his family life; the comeback that never quite came; and the legal troubles that dogged his estate after his death, from a combination of prescription cough syrup intoxication and sleep apnea. It also ends up being a document of the last innocent days of Houston rap, before eyes and hands were fixed on it." - The New York Times
"Fascinating, well-researched biography of a brilliant, troubled, flawed, talented, compassionate individual who changed the world despite all that stood in his path ... [SWEET JONES] shattered every single assumption I would make about rappers - the book humanizes him and his family and friends, and exposes his genius and his flaws ... an incredible story - hilarious, difficult, tragic, and frustrating throughout." - Professor Andrew Cencini
"One of the most entertaining and informative rap books that I've ever read ... I gained a whole new level of respect and understanding of [UGK] through the book. [It] took me into that world, into Short Texas, into Bun B's mind, into Pimp C's life ... It's almost like an action movie ... an astounding piece of work ... I only hope it gets all of the praise and exposure it deserves and inspires a spate of deeply researched books in the genre." - Music journalist Kris Ex
From the Back Cover
"I wouldn't be here without [UGK] ... All it takes is one person to do something and make everybody else feel that they can do it too. And they was one of the first to do it." - Lil Wayne
"[UGK] gave birth to Southern rap. UGK made it cool to be country." - Scarface
"Pimp C helped lay the foundation that we stand on where Southern Hip-Hop music is concerned." - J. Prince, CEO of Rap-A-Lot Records, Raw Report DVD
"I grew up on 'em. If it wasn't for UGK, Ludacris probably wouldn't even be here." - Ludacris, The Final Chapter DVD
"[Pimp C] was a revolutionary. He was an undercover agent of God. [To] change people's lives, you gotta be able to get into spots where people need the most help." - Kool Ace
"Pimp was larger than life. I honestly thought he would live forever." - Nancy Byron, Pimp C's publicist, The Source Magazine
"The [posthumous] music doesn't really matter to me. I'd give it all back if I could have my friend back." - Bun B, Houston Chronicle
"As we keep a lighter up for the Pimp, it's only right that we remember him not just for his often-under-rated musical contribution but also for his indomitable, smack-talking spirit." - The FADER

About the author
Julia Beverly solidified her position in the male-dominated urban music industry as the CEO and Editor-in-Chief of OZONE Magazine, which she founded in 2002. Tagged as “your favorite rapper’s favorite magazine,” OZONE carved out a unique niche with its raw and uncensored journalism style and gained a solid following in the crowded urban marketplace. OZONE was instrumental in introducing Southern rap’s biggest names, such as Pitbull, Young Jeezy, Rick Ross, Lil Wayne and more, to the mainstream.
In 2006, Beverly extended the OZONE brand to include a star-studded award ceremony. In addition to freelance photography and journalism for VIBE, The Source, URB Magazine, and the Miami New Times, Beverly herself has been featured in publications like Businessweek and the Orlando Sentinel. Prolific “beefs”) and goes above and beyond in every imaginable way to offer readers an unbiased, honest, and often touching biography behind a very complex and layered individual. Julia Beverly does an IMACULATE job! Without giving too much away, expect to be surprised, touched, and educated in the history of Pimp C and his associates. My personal favorite part discusses his time and personal growth behind bars. The fact this book also has photographs of rap lyrics, family members, associates, prison letters and even tax forms from C’s life, shows that Beverly is not only capable of masterfully retelling a legends life story but also illustrates her capabilities as a researcher/reporter. Never in my life have I finished a piece of literature so massive and been left desperately wanting more. My only request is that Beverly continues her writing career as clearly she is an incredibly gifted and competent author. MUST BUY!!!!!
(Possible Spoiler alert)
Haven't finished reading the book yet but what I've read has been so well written it sucks me in and I'm able to visualize like I'm there as an observer. Hearing UGK for the first time caught my attention in a way nothing in the Hip Hop genre had before and it is due to Pimp C's skills as Musician and a Producer. Took me a minute to get used to Pimp C but I grew to love and respect him for his courage and huge heart. The book also provides insight into the brotherly relationship of Chad Butler and Bernard Freeman (Bun B). They were so different but they had a level of trust that was unshakable. Mama Wes, I learned, is a key figure in UGK's development and success. Mama Wes was definitely from Louisiana and described beautifully in the scene of Mama Wes meeting J Prince for for the first time. The book has a lot of sad moments. I rarely cry but I wept for a couple minutes when Monroe passed. Monroe, in my opinion, was integral to Pimp C's success as a producer, both technically and creatively. UGK (actually Pimp C's music - the intro to Choppin' Blades) caught my ear and worked its way through the cracks in the barrier that kept me from enjoying the sub-genre, Gangsta Rap, but those few moments changed the way I hear, think and feel about the music. Country Rap Tunes as Pimp C defined it.
After reading his Trill Life Story, it made me not only respect him more but Love his body of work that much more. No one will ever be able to re-create or duplicate this man. The fact that his sound, his artistry is so unique if anyone attempted to mimic his work, the whole world could see Only the Pimp. Music has not been the same since his departure but his legacy forever will live on.
Buy this book today and you won't regret it!
#UGK4LIFE
Over the years, I started to love UGK's music after Pimp C died.
Like Mobb Deep, UGK were very underrated.
The book was very detailed. It gives a reader a depiction of the events that surrounded each UGK album.
I didn't even know that Jeezy and Pimp had a issue over Jeezy charging him a invoice.
If you're a UGK fan, buy the book and make sure to buy their albums on here too(Super Tight, Ridin Dirty, etc).
If u like Pimp C's brashness like I did when I heard the ATL interview on YouTube, you'll be in for a surprise. The book is definitely worth the buy. Julia Beverly did a good job with it as well.

I cannot recommend this book enough. Long live the Pimp!
Although not a book that you can't wait to pick back up, it is very well written and Julia does a great job in drawing you in. Reading the chapter on Pimp's death - brought me to tears. Julia has done a great job in humanising "The Pimp"
Fantastic book!
