In the Footsteps of Greatness Audible Audiobook – Unabridged

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 41 ratings

Having attempted and failed to traverse the entire 212-mile John Muir Trail twice before, Josh Mathe decided to brave the Sierra Nevada wilderness one last time. And to up the ante, this time he would try to run! In the Footsteps of Greatness is an inspirational and refreshingly authentic account of what Josh found while exploring his limits on the edge of the world.

From the shady depths of Yosemite Valley to the top of 14,505-foot Mount Whitney through some of the most treacherous and starkly beautiful terrain on the planet, this memoir is both a thrilling adventure (complete with bear encounters and snowstorms) as well as a poignant look into the mind and spirit of an athlete who is nothing if not human.

This was a really great book to read and demonstrated the commitment and mental toughness that it takes sometimes to accomplish great things. I liked the authors down to earth writing style; he is a good storyteller. The details of where he was at and what he was doing made it seem like you were there and more exciting, you wanted to be there. I live in the same area as the author and have hiked some of the same trails so it was especially fun to read about his journey. I hope to get out on the JMT in the next year or so. Thanks for the read and I'm looking forward to his new book - "I Athlete".

I just finished your new book on my Kindle, and what an incredibly inspiring (and informative/helpful) book it was! Even though I do not consider myself an athlete, the principles and concepts in this book are applicable to ANY life (including that of a 40-something mom!).My son (age 21, engineering student at UCBoulder in CO and hiking/climbing enthusiast) is coming home for a short visit this weekend and I'm passing it on to him to read while he's here. The way you write (your 'voice' in print) reminds me SO much of my son- I know he will really love your book. Thanks for the inspiring read!

I read this book on a flight to LA. It captured my attention from the first page. This is a story of personal achievement that very few have the courage to attempt. Josh is an amazing storyteller. He is able to take you on a journey of the John Muir Trail with indescribable detail. You can feel every challenge and triumph as if you are running alongside him on this journey. Very few are brave enough to leave their family and friends to test their will to survive to find their true self. Josh's perseverance and dedication to his desire to accomplish running 212 miles in the Sierra Nevada mountains speaks to the greatness of whom we truly are if we just challenge ourselves and commit. Great job Josh!

I'll be embarking on the John Muir Trail in August, so when Josh came to Santa Rosa to speak I headed down to my local REI to hear what he had to say. His presentation was amusing and helpful, so I decided to purchase his book.

It's a quick read, and not at all the guide to the trail I expected. Instead it focuses on mindset, on Josh's personal battle with the trail and his ultimate victory. I highly recommend it for any hiker, especially those considering the JMT!

Horrible writing. Tells you almost nothing about the JMT as it's about one (ill prepared) man who just wants to talk about how awesome he is.

Josh Mathe shares all the intricate details of preparing for this adventure. How he overcame his perceived limitations and tore away the negativity that crept in every time he faced a challenge. Hiking and camping enthusiasts will get a lot of tips about how to plan and pack for a hiking adventure as the author discusses all the thought that went into selecting the right clothes, shoes, and bear canisters to protect the food supply. ~ http://bookreviews.infoversant.com/footsteps-greatness-josh-mathe/

Even though I am now an 81 yr. old woman and no longer hike or jog, I loved Josh's book. His writing brought me back to memories of my hikes in the Santa Cruz mountains and cross-country skiing in the Sierras and the challenges I faced in meeting those goals. Thank you, Josh, and I look forward to reading other adventures you might write about.

loved this book! it rehabilitated the aesthetics of hiking alone carrying everything you need. I haven't experienced that since college in the 1960s, but this book brought back that feeling. Timr to get back in shape and hit the trail! I recommend this book to anyone who wants a refresher on life, or who is looking for the next game to play, the next challenge.
