I’ve been using Sue Tompkins’ “Contemporary Astrologer’s Handbook” as my go-to quick reference for many years, as well as Clifford’s “Getting to the Heart of Your Chart”. I also have Arroyo’s “Chart Interpretation Handbook” and Tracy Mark’s “Art of Chart Interpretation”. All are fine and well respected references to have at hand when delineating, but I prefer to keep Tompkins and Clifford close by, primarily using Tompkins for quick lookups when delineating a chart.
“Secrets from a Stargazer’s Notebook” was suggested by a fellow Astrologer so I grabbed a copy. I’m very impressed with the level of material covered. It has what you’d consider the standard stuff but also fills in the gaps the other “Handbooks” leave out. Of course, this book is much thicker because of the extra material, but it’s size is manageable and is my new go-to quick reference I’ll use from now on to save a trip to the bookcase and pulling a focused resource. I’ve got my new copy nicely tabbed and ready to go.
My Quick Reference Handbook preference:
1. Secrets from a Stargazer’s Notebook
2. Contemporary Astrologer’s Handbook
3. Getting to the Heart of Your Chart
All the rest…

This book is witty and fun AND gives insights into astrology: the way many things work together and sometimes just don't work at all!! Debbie has been my astrologer for years. She is excellent. She is accurate. She is funny. Just like her book, which I give to my friends as gifts. This is not a "how to" book or a beginners "learn astrology" book. It is a lot of years, hundreds of charts and tons of experience, her personal and professional experiences of astrology in real life. It's her spin, her book and every few months I re-read it, highlight certain parts of it and probably need a new copy to replace my old, dog-eared one! And of course, if something big is happening in my life or, according to the stars, about to happen, I check out Debbie's book, or just call her....I do love this book! :)
I originally made this statement in December 2005. It is now September 2012 and I'm still of the opinion it's one of the top 10 if not top 5 book for an Astrologer's library
I am raising my nephew because he does not have a good relationship with his mother. She has some issues in her life that out of respect I won't get into here, but based on the void of course moon chart the author included in the book I determined that my nephew is a void of course child. He's had a very difficult life and the difficulties began when he was only weeks old. There is a short chapter in the book about VOC children and it specifically says these children may have an absentee mother among other maternal issues. These maternal issues are so precise as they relate to my sister and my nephew that it cannot be coincidental. Furthermore, my nephew totally believes that he has control over his own life (his successes and such). By age 12 he was adamant that he did not believe in God and that everything is up to him. The right side of his chart is pretty much blank. All planets are on the left side of his chart. According to Secrets From a Stargazer's Notebook when one has most planets on the left side, he believes his life is in his own hands rather than fate.
My younger sister (not my nephew's mom) is like our mother in that she is very religious and believes there is something else controlling our destinies. Most of her planets are on the right. My planets are pretty scattered. Spiritually I'm all over the place. I want to believe I have control over my life, but I always go back to destiny.
For days I have been searching and searching for more, more, more about astrology. I am a true believer thanks to this book. I only wish that more people would provide more detailed info about their experiences as there are hundreds of thousands of astrology books out there and it would make it much easier to discern which ones to purchase. I am reading this book for a second time and looking for astrology courses to take online. I HIGHLY recommend this book. I truly believe I could have had a much better, more successful life if only I had discovered it when I was in my twenties and planning my adult life and career.
I only gave the book four stars because although it is an excellent book obviously written by an intelligent and skilled astrologer I would have preferred it to be longer. I think there are some things she could have gone into more detail about such as the astrological houses and how they really affect our lives. This is already a thick book. She could have written maybe a part two or a second volume, but it never fails--when you find a great author you only desire more and sometimes there just isn't more.

Concentrates on the feel of the planets and signs, amd shows you how to combine them to read a horoscope.
This book is a requirement for budding astrologers to read. The other books are all scientific in nature, this one shows you how to get your mind round the art side of the subject.
Will still need the boring books for the details of what the aspects mean traditionally, but with this book in hand you will soon look like a master astrologer.
Plus the moon tables and Mercury retrograde tables are so useful.
Also talks a lot about Chiron and introduced it to me along with some other asteroids.
I think I've got my point across of how useful this book could be.
I had bought it allured by some reference to Chiron I had read on a forum. In fact, just few scrap words about Chiron itself, too much reference to Zeine Stein's commercial website. In substance nothing, I went through some other chapters but the feeling was not positive. In fact, more than like a child, I felt I was treated like an idiot.
No, I did not like this book. Thank you for asking.
