THE NORTH FLORIDA AUTHOR

After retiring from the ministry, I pursued my desire to write. I grew up in North Florida and my life was shaped by the culture of small towns and rural areas and my books reflect the uniqueness of this special part of Florida.

I draw from my forty plus years of ministry to create the Mark Thomas series of novels: Ran Like Joseph, Just Have Faith, Prodigal Sons, and Ripples. The books follow the career of my fictional pastor, Mark Thomas over a seventeen-year period of ministry in three different North Florida towns. The books are a realistic presentation of the life of a pastor and the people and situations that pastors often are confronted with and must respond to. These novels have suspense, intrigue, mystery, and love without any vulgarity or profanity.

"These stories (The Mark Thomas novels) are so real you think you can recall the events and know the folks who people the books." -Delores Leggett Walker, author of "The Promise Trilogy"

"Jimmy Deas is the exception that preachers can't write novels." -David Butler, author of "Signal Six" and "Echo on the Suwannee"

The stories books--A Teacher's Gift, Just a Dog, and Mama Said--are compilations of stories about people, events, places, or life as I see it. These stories of life, love, and laughter will make you laugh, possibly cry, take you down memory lane, and hopefully give readers a new appreciation for this wonderful journey of life.

Author Jimmy Deas has spent more than 40 years in ministry. Drawing from this experience he has created Mark Thomas, a twenty-five-year-old minister who has taken a less than traditional route to end up at the Gentry Baptist Church in small town Florida. From the Air Force to college, Thomas dreams of going to Seminary school.

Just one and a half months into his first role as lead pastor, the small town of Gentry is rocked by the odd death of one of their own. First to the scene, and witness to the events, Reverend Mark Thomas cradles Sammy Garber as he says his last words, “Ran” and “Joseph.” A local farmer who also plays part-time law officer rushes Sammy and Mark to the nearest hospital, but it’s too late. Called upon to lead his first funeral in a gripping affair, the town rallies behind the young pastor as he finds his place as one of their own.

Sprinkled with courting, romance, insecurities, and small-town hospitality, this first book in the Mark Thomas novels has readers feeling right at home. “Ran Like Joseph” will grip readers as they discover the trials and tribulations of small-town living and the true heart of ministry, helping others. Feel like one of Gentry’s own as Reverend Thomas makes a lasting mark on all he embraces.

God’s plan guides us all, but Reverend Mark Thomas’ path is an interesting and entertaining journey to behold. Deas has gifted us the pleasure of falling into Mark Thomas’ life as he matures, grows in his ministry, and guides the town through this unexpected death. “Ran Like Joseph” will have you asking for more as Thomas makes a lasting impact far beyond the page.

I enjoyed this book very much! I couldn’t put it down from start to finish! Having grown up in a small community, I can relate and it brought back fond memories for me! Especially the Halloween Carnival with the cake walk!

Where I grew up I had relatives who lived in a very small town. I can relate to a number of the characters and the time frame in the book. An easy read...I didn't want to put it down. The lessons being learned by the young Preacher and the lives he didn't know he's touched, make for a great story. I could see this as the beginning of a Halmark movie! I have ordered the next two books in this series. I want to read more about Mark Thomas's adventures and life.

Having been blessed to have grown up in a small town similar to the one in this story, I found myself caring for the characters—the church congregation and other townspeople. I was also caught up in the mystery running throughout the book that, when solved, explains the cryptic title. The end of the book left me wanting to know more about the minister’s life story; and isn’t that the indicator of a good book—one that leaves you wanting more?
