Ryan and Brittani Rollen are parents of a nonverbal son. After experiencing his frustrations in being unable to communicate, they developed The Tiny Talker™ to help him. The Tiny Talker is a portable, inexpensive speech aid with buttons which verbalize common communication needs. Then, the Rollens had a new idea: a book would help kids with special needs learn how to use The Tiny Talker and other speech aids! In Lucas the Lion Loves The Tiny Talker, parents can read their child the story of how Lucas uses The Tiny Talker throughout his day. In reading the story, the child presses the buttons on The Tiny Talker and learns to use the device!

I was born in Hawaii and moved to Southern California where I grew up and enjoyed the beautiful weather and art around me. I have loved drawing and painting when I figured out that the pencil was my ticket to my magical imagination. I would carry my sketchbook everywhere I went so that I could draw everything in my imagination and everything around me. Capturing my imagination and the things around me was the only way I could bring my ideas to life and to take pictures around me.

When I was young I didn't have a camera, so whenever I saw beautiful things, I would open my sketchbook and draw what I saw. I dreamed of being an artist, wanting to share my ideas with everyone, especially children. From that point on I focused on drawing and painting, and graduated from Brigham Young University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Illustration. In my senior year, I entered my artwork to the Student Show and received 2 awards.

Since then I have been featured in Artist's Magazine, Skipping Stones, Utah Valley Magazine, The Daily Herald, Big Bear Grizzly Newspaper, and Jackalope Art Fair. I have also done work for New Moon Magazine, Ladybug Magazine, Core Knowledge, KRBY Creations LLC, The Friend Magazine, and many others. I am currently working on an exciting book with Brown Books Publishing. My newest book "Sand Mouse's Soup" is out now! It's published by BeachHouse Publishing and it's a wonderful story about Sand Mouse who shares the spirit of aloha with his neighbors.

My 3 year old non verbal child couldn’t communicate with us until I bought this tiny talker. Now when she needs something we ask her to get her talker and she will push the button to what she needs. It works so well and makes communication a bit easier. I couldn’t afford a $250 app for my phone and this has been a godsend. Definitely glad I bought it. She doesn’t sit so well for the book to read it to her but she does use the tiny talker I would highly recommend if you are having troubles communicating with your nonverbal toddler.

I have a 2 year old with delayed speech and he has started aggressive behaviours since he can't communicate I remembered back to when my 7 year old was 3 years old with delayed speech and newly diagnosed with autism at that time he attended preschool and they were able to lend him a go talk. Unfortunately at this time we do not have the funds or access to get one and so I started looking and came across this book and tiny talker. We just recieved it in the mail today I read the book and we followed along with the tiny talker. He is communicating with us for the first time ever!!!! This is the first AAC type device he has ever used and he is able to follow along with the book and communicate with his mom using the device that came with it. I am a special education preschool teacher. The majority of my students are nonverbal. This book is so cute and appropriate! I think it would also be great for siblings to better understand as well. I am giving this book 5 stars because the concepts and what the book is however, I do find the pictures a little vague and if my student spilled their milk, I would work on independence or saying I need help versus I’m sorry but I would recommend this book with a glowing recommendation with this. I have never seen a book highlighting using a device so well and appropriately before. For families who do not have access to 200$ talkers, this is great in order to give your child a voice and normalize it. As a teacher, I will be adapting the pictures possibly to fit into our boardmaker pecs/ core as well as using a go talk vs the talker but for a home book, this is amazing!
