Purchase options and add-ons
New York Times bestselling author B. A. Paris captivated psychological thriller readers everywhere with Behind Closed Doors. Now she invites you into another home full of heart-pounding secrets, in The Guest.
Some secrets never leave.
Iris and Gabriel have just arrived home from a make-or-break holiday. But a shock awaits them. One of their closest friends, Laure, is in their house. The atmosphere quickly becomes tense as she oversteps again and again: sleeping in their bed, wearing Iris' clothes, even rearranging the furniture.
Laure has walked out on her husband―and their good friend―Pierre, over his confession of an affair and a secret child. Iris and Gabriel want to be supportive of their friends, but as Laure's mood becomes increasingly unpredictable, her presence takes its toll.
Iris and Gabriel's only respite comes in the form of a couple new to town. But with them comes their gardener, who has a checkered past.
Soon, secrets from all their pasts will unravel, some more dangerous than they could have known.

One of Woman’s World’s “Most Anticipated Books of 2024”
One of Goodreads’s “96 On-Trend Mysteries and Thrillers”
“Bestseller Paris orchestrates a symphony of subplots in this creepy domestic thriller. Paris deftly juggles the many characters and plot strands on the way toward a wild climax. The results are electrifying.”―Publishers Weekly
“Well-crafted secrets and betrayals abound.”―Booklist
“A tightly woven, character-driven thriller, The Guest shows how secrets can build up into toxic time bombs.”―Apple Books
“This taut, intimate, propulsive domestic thriller is fraught with impulsive bad choices that ordinary people can make.”―Patriot Ledger
“An eerie, chilling page-turner . . . danger lurks around every corner.”―Woman’s World
“By the end, it’s almost possible to figure out the who, as one of the few left standing, if not the why. But Paris thoughtfully fills the gaps with a full confession that will have you saying ‘of course!’”―St. Louis Post-Dispatch
“B.A. Paris once again pushes comfort-zone boundaries in her newest sinister thriller.”―The Big Thrill
“B. A. Paris has become the definitive master of neo-gothic noir and all her talents are front and center in The Guest. I’d forgotten how much fun suburban nightmare thrillers like this can be. The Guest is a terrific tale from the school of Lisa Gardner and Harlan Coben, Paris proving herself to be every bit their equal.”―BookTrib
“I am obsessed with The Guest―and I completely neglected my responsibilities so I could keep reading! I'm surprised the pages didn’t catch fire because I was turning them so fast―I was absolutely riveted and compelled to find out what happened. There is no one―no one―who creates high-wire domestic suspense like the amazing B.A. Paris. Do not miss this, dear readers. Standing ovation to one of my very favorite writers!”―Hank Phillippi Ryan, USA Today bestselling author of One Wrong Word
“A mesmeric, tense and twisting nightmare. Suffocating, controlled and hugely entertaining”―Chris Whitaker, New York Times bestselling author of We Begin at the End
“Expertly plotted and compellingly told―a cautionary tale that will put you off ever having anyone to stay with you again. I raced through it!”―Harriet Tyce, international bestselling author of Blood Orange

A masterfully-designed puzzle of a story that can only be truly appreciated in retrospect. The opening scene is odd and deceptively simple. The reader is lulled into both the normalcy and the disturbing elements from the outset. Iris and Gabriel return from vacation to find their friend, Laure, ensconced in their home unexpectedly. Laure is slightly apologetic, but oblivious to her trespass and intrusion. I was incredulous. Who would actually do this? I’d call a taxi or an Uber, and send her on her merry way. So many buttons and boundaries pushed.
Laure plows forward undeterred and undaunted. She tearfully explains that Pierre, her husband, recently confessed that he has a daughter. Laure suspects an ongoing affair. Unable to face the drama, she fled France, seeking refuge with Iris and Gabriel.
The Pelley’s allow Laure to stay for several weeks, despite disruptions to their routine, their privacy and their marriage. Iris feels trapped. Gabriel recently took a leave of absence from his medical practice, after the death of his father and a childhood friend. He’s at home, floundering and lost. Iris and their daughter, Beth, are understandably concerned about him.
Now, Laure is there, too, constantly in their midst. Desperate for a respite from the claustrophobic chaos that her house has become, Iris takes up running to escape.
She meets Esme in their local village, delighted to have a new friend. Esme’s husband, Hugh, and their landscaper, Joseph, round out the new circle of acquaintances. Iris feels something akin to relief at the appearance of these unfamiliar people in her life, grateful that these new energies can balance out the incessant dependence of Laure.
Yet, Laure manages to insert herself firmly into this new dynamic as well. A dark undertone of foreboding whispers just below the surface. Clearly something is very wrong and nothing is as it seems. The two couples get to know each other, and Joseph lurks moodily in the background. Laure continues to seek attention and solace, but appears to be in no hurry to leave the overextended hospitality. Pierre isn’t responding to Laure’s efforts at contact either. Then, abruptly, she disappears. Tension and volatility run high when the search uncovers multiple secrets that fall like dominoes. When truths are finally revealed, the results are chilling and unforeseen.
As an avid reader, I’m rarely surprised by the twists and turns in books, but this one genuinely shocked me. I saw none of it coming.
The ending was a stunner. There was also some ambiguity, which was a nice touch, a small, oblique reference made by one of the characters near the end, that could be taken in one of two ways. I chose to believe that was the author’s intent, perhaps to leave room for interpretation or further discussion. This was an intricate, inventive and clever read that speaks to the potential perils of uninvited houseguests.
I thoroughly enjoyed the book.
Iris and Gabriel seem to have it all: a beautiful country home, a daughter taking a gap year in Greece, and their good friends from Paris, Laure and Pierre, always up for a holiday weekend away. But when a young man has a tragic accident in a nearby quarry, Gabriel is the one to find him and hear his final words, leaving Gabriel with a guilty burden. As Iris tries to help ease her husband’s trauma, they acquire an unexpected house guest. Their friend Laure has seemingly moved in, her marriage in crisis after her husband Pierre’s shocking reveal that he has had a child with another woman. Soon Laure makes herself too much at home: wearing Iris's clothes, following her everywhere she goes, and asking questions about the now-closed quarry and the recent tragedy. Meanwhile, Pierre is refusing to answer Gabriel's calls.
REVIEW :
One of my favorite authors whose previous books were all 4 or 5 stars; The Prisoner (‘22), The Therapist (‘21), The Dilemma ('20), Bring Me Back ('18), The Breakdown (‘17) and Behind Closed Doors ('16).

Writing pulled me right-in to the different relationships in this tale. The friendship drama, new and old, and the smooth writing of the author made me fly thru this book. It did get a little repetitive in the middle and there were no likeable characters. Definitely a disappointing read for me from an author who has never disappointed me before.
Gabriel is having a hard time after finding a young man near death, and who did die in his arms, at the local quarry. His depression caused him to take a leave of absence from his work as a GP. Not being able to reach Pierre is not helping. Iris is having a difficult time with Gabriel’s withdrawal and with having Laure underfoot.
Add into the mix new villagers, Esme and Hugh. Hugh is 20 years older than Esme and Esme is having a what is termed a geriatric pregnancy. Their gardener, Joseph seems very close to Esme.
Mix them all together and get disappearances, deaths, secrets.
Great twist/reveal at the end!

As I picked up my book each evening with anticipation that, tonight it MUST get more interesting, well it just did not. I struggled to make it to the end, just KNOWING that she would knock it out of the park with a BANG. I just found it rather, well, boring, nothing piqued my interest. All unlikeable characters, even at the end reveal, well for me, I just though, oh, ok then. Disappointed, however, will look forward to reading another from her, which I hope will renew my enthusiasm.
