Hacks gets a romantic twist in the vein of Jenn Bennett in this “simmering” (Publishers Weekly) novel about a standoffish teen girl whose loner status gets challenged by a dynamic elderly woman and a perpetually cheerful boy.

Eloise Deane is the worst and doesn’t care who knows it. She’s grumpy, prefers to be alone, and is just slogging through senior year with one goal: get accepted to USC and move to California. So when her guidance counselor drops the bombshell that to score a scholarship she’ll desperately need, her applications require volunteer hours, Eloise is up for the challenge. Until she’s paired with LifeCare, a volunteer agency that offers social support to lonely seniors through phone calls and visits. Basically, it’s a total nightmare for Eloise’s anxiety.

Eloise realizes she’s made a huge mistake—especially when she’s paired with Austin, the fellow volunteer who’s the sunshine to her cloudy day. But as Eloise and Austin work together to keep Marianne Landis—the mysterious former frontwoman of the 1970s band the Laundromats—company, something strange happens. Eloise actually…likes Marianne and Austin? She isn’t sure what to do with that, especially when her feelings toward Austin begin to blur into more-than-friends territory.

And when ex-girlfriends, long-buried wounds, and insecurities reappear, Eloise will have a choice to make: go all in with Marianne and Austin or get out before she gets hurt.

The only thing Eloise hates more than socializing with other people is her own struggle with anxiety and depression. When she is encouraged to participate in community service to help appear well-rounded on her college applications, she gets paired with Austin- Mr. Positive himself. One of them will have to win the personality war, or everything will end in disaster.

All Alone With You has been one of my favorite reads this year! Eloise, the ultimate grumpy high school senior is told by her guidance counselor she needs more volunteer hours if she wants to get into her dream school. The solution is to volunteer at a social group for seniors that are lonely by speaking on the phone with them.

After a few failed attempts to connect on the phone Austin, another volunteer and a ray of sunshine invites her to tag along with him on a house call to a former lead singer.

All Alone With You is a book about relationships. Romantic relationships. Friendships. Family relationships. And getting to know yourself.

Eloise Deane is the girl that eats in the library. She’s the one that skips parties. She doesn’t do dating. She’d rather sit in her basement bedroom and play video games. She’s ranked second in her class and is a computer science nerd. She’s grumpy and sarcastic and imperfect. She feels real.

Austin is bubbly and friendly and plays in a band. He enjoys helping others, and doesn’t mind being the center of attention.

When these two seemingly polar opposites come together, magic happens. As Austin pushes Eloise out of her comfort zone, they both learn there are risks and rewards for their actions. And though Eloise is the storyteller, you see growth in both of them.

It’s Marianne that brings Eloise and Austin together, and boy, is she a surprise. The addition of her character brings laughter and contemplation and irreverence to the table.

Author Amelia Diane Coombs writes with raw honesty. In her hands, there’s substance. Even little moments with Eloise’s sister are treated with care, filling up the edges of the story and creating a compelling whole.

All Alone With You is one if the better YA romance novels I’ve read this year.

This was an unexpectedly delightful book because it not only had a wonderfully grumpy main character -- I loved flawed, seemingly unlovable/unlikeable protagonists who are actually very relatable and real -- but also because the focus of the story was as much on the teen romance as it was on the relationship between the MC and the older woman she's volunteering to help. Each of the three characters were so carefully and well drawn and had their own sets of flaws and perks that complemented one another and helped drive the narrative. Character-driven, instead of plot-driven, narratives in this genre aren't common, at least not done well, and this one is an exception to that.

*Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher/author for providing me with an E-Arc of this book. The following is my honest opinion *

."All Alone with You" is about high school senior Eloise who is struggling with her mental health and autopiloting through her last year of school. Pushed out of her comfort zone, she meets fellow high schooler Austin and senior citizen Marianne, who play a big part into Eloise learning its okay to not be okay.

Where do I even start?? The mental health representation and genuineness and realistic nature of this book is top tier. This book felt like a hug and fresh air to me. I really enjoyed how Amelia Diane Coombs portrayed the main characters, in particular Eloise, her mental health battle and her coping mechanisms. I felt Eloise in my bones. I relate to the struggle so much and just seeing her growth throughout the book was amazing. Coombs portrayed the story in such a way that it felt as if I was talking to Eloise and hearing the story from her myself. It was beautifully written.

I highly recommend this book and look forward to reading the authors other works!
