'A terrific history of the online creator economy.' The New York Times

'This book is about a revolution. It has radically upended how we've understood and interacted with our world. It has demolished traditional barriers and empowered millions who were previously marginalized. It has created vast new sectors of our economy, while devastating legacy institutions. It is often dismissed by traditionalists as a vacant fad, when in fact it is the greatest and most disruptive change in modern capitalism.'

Acclaimed
Washington Post reporter Taylor Lorenz presents a groundbreaking social history of the internet-revealing how online influence and the creators who amass it have reshaped our world, online and off.

For over a decade, Taylor Lorenz has been the authority on internet culture, documenting its far-reaching effects on all corners of our lives. Her reporting is serious yet entertaining and illuminates deep truths about ourselves and the lives we create online. In her debut book,
Extremely Online, she reveals how online influence came to upend the world, demolishing traditional barriers and creating whole new sectors of the economy.

By tracing how the internet has changed what we want and how we go about getting it, Lorenz unearths how social platforms' power users radically altered our expectations of content, connection, purchasing, and power. Lorenz documents how moms who started blogging were among the first to monetize their personal brands online, how bored teens who began posting selfie videos reinvented fame as we know it, and how young creators on TikTok are leveraging opportunities to opt out of the traditional career pipeline. It's the real social history of the internet.

Emerging seemingly out of nowhere, these shifts in how we use the internet seem easy to dismiss as fads. However, these social and economic transformations created a digital dynamic so unappreciated and insurgent that it ultimately created new approaches to work, entertainment, fame, and ambition in the 21st century.

Extremely Online is the inside, untold story of what we have done to the internet, and what it has done to us.

This astute debut from Lorenz, a Washington Post technology columnist, traces the tumultuous history of social media from the early 2000s to the present.... Lorenz accomplishes the difficult feat of wrangling a cogent narrative out of the unruliness of social media, while offering smart insight into how platforms affect their users.... It's a powerful assessment of how logging on has changed the world.Publishers Weekly

5,0 z 5 gwiazdek Traces the Blogosphere to TikTok
Opinia napisana w Stanach Zjednoczonych dnia 19 marca 2024
Taylor Lorenz’s EXTREMELY ONLINE presents the history of social media in ways that help the reader to connect with the important concepts. For instance, the book helped me better understand the term “gatekeeping,” how traditional media institutions and people with power are perceived as holding back information. Today, GenZ perceives people who don’t gatekeep as being more authentic and transparent.

Lorenz’s chapters on blogging are particularly strong. “Mommy Bloggers” had a huge influence on the current culture of sharing one’s pain. Interestingly, a lot of the original Mommy Bloggers were considered to be “selling out” if they put up banner ads on their sites. That is quite a transition from the mom influencers who thrive today on platforms like Instagram. Nobody bats an eye today at those large brand deals, which suggests how the culture has changed.

When it comes to newer social media platforms like YouTube and TikTok, Lorenz includes poignant descriptions of creator burnout. Creators struggle with the constant need to produce content, and the “winner take all” environment of social media. There also seems to be a certain bloodlust for tearing down creators, Lorenz notes. Hopefully we can return to what made the internet compelling in its younger years—starting by dialing down the toxicity.

3,0 z 5 gwiazdek A great history of social media, but not enough analysis
Opinia napisana w Wielkiej Brytanii dnia 26 marca 2024
Extremely Online is an interesting and in-depth account of the rise of social media and influencers/creators.

It has an extremely US-centric view, though that’s perhaps understandable.

Its flaw, however, is a lack of analysis as to how any of this has meaningfully affected the world, and what it means for the majority of people who aren’t hugely popular online.

Should everyone attempt to become a poster/creator and build their own ‘brand’ (🤮)? Or is it fine (or perhaps even good/bad) to disconnect from social media? What’s the future of social media and how will it continue to evolve? Etc.

Sadly, none of these questions are properly addressed, save for a few short pages towards the end of the book. For the most part, this book is simply a timeline of events. That’s interesting - especially for a someone old enough to have lived through it all - but I also wanted more.

All things considered, Lorenz is an engaging writer and the book kept my attention all the way through. However, it also left me with a lot of unanswered questions, and felt slightly unsatisfying as a result.

5,0 z 5 gwiazdek Great history of social media
Opinia napisana w Stanach Zjednoczonych dnia 7 października 2023
I loved this book. Although written from a female perspective (excluding platforms like Reddit almost entirely), it does a great job of explaining the history of how we got to todays social media landscape. There’s a lot of great history of platforms from the blogosphere to Instagram and TikTok told by the people involved from the beginning. Lorenz did a lot of research and managed to cover a very splintered landscape to provide the full picture of how internet fame and fortune became normal. We take for granted things like the term “creator” or hashtags, but they became prolific for reasons that are still pertinent today. Lorenz is I afraid of asking the tough questions, and she doesn’t put on rose colored glasses when explaining what went right and wrong in each era and platform. Highly recommended read.

5,0 z 5 gwiazdek A terrific history of the online creator economy (so far)
Opinia napisana w Stanach Zjednoczonych dnia 4 października 2023
“Extremely Online” is a deeply reported, fascinating read about the history of the creator industry and everything we know about the internet today. This book is for creators, history nerds and basically anyone interested in the weird online fads, economy and world we currently live in. Lorenz has been writing about this topic before most newspaper editors could understand the internet itself -- and it shows. It's a compelling and engaging read about how the internet shaped our current culture, and business models and offers a window into where it might all be going.

as someone who spent the past two decades building software and businesses online for brands, influencers & creators this was an exceptionally well put together summary of what’s happened online and how we got to where we are today…

… whether you’ve lived and breathed it or you’re contextually interested in learning it for the first time, this is the perfect book to read.

could barely put it down.
