This is the most informative and useful book on Hatha Yoga that I have found
This is the most informative and useful book on Hatha Yoga that I have found. The first chapter, “Introduction to Yogasana”, provides compelling information on the benefits of Hatha Yoga postures that could literally transform your life. Asanas are not just stretching and strengthening exercises: they are a spiritual practice designed to awaken the chakras by purifying the body and mind.
Some of the most important words in the book are, “Stiffness of the body is due to blocked prana and subsequent accumulation of toxins. When prana begins to flow, toxins are removed from the system, ensuring the health of the whole body.” This is vital information for my health that I have not read anywhere else. Flexibility is a key indicator of health, and is a side effect of improved prana flow throughout the body. I believe many Qigong masters do not stretch but are flexible because they have good flow of life force in the body. Chunyi Lin is one example of such a Qigong master.
Asanas clear mental and physical toxins, but stretching is only one way to do that: they also clear toxins by stimulating the life force (generating heat) when the body is held in unusual positions and the will is used to fight against gravity. Though I still stretch, I am not relying upon it entirely to clear the toxins from my body when practicing Hatha Yoga because I understand that generating enough heat in uncomfortable positions is just as important! So even an inflexible beginner like me (recovering from 40+ years of sedentary living) is bound to make progress by patiently practicing Hatha Yoga every day with a strong effort. From the book: "No straining: never exert undue force while doing asanas. Beginners may find their muscles stiff at first, but after several weeks of regular practice, they will be surprised to find their muscles are more supple." The key is to practice daily without straining, be patient and have faith. Hatha Yoga should always feel good!
Also, many of the Hatha Yoga postures in this book are not so commonly found in other Hatha Yoga books. Most other Hatha Yoga books seem to be derived from B.K.S. Iyengar's Light on Yoga, which is the first catalog of asanas to be widely distributed in the west.
I believe there are other excellent books on Hatha Yoga but certainly none better. I also use Naomi Annand's book, "Yoga: A Manual for Life", as it is excellent for beginners like me. Naomi's teaching is strongly influenced by B.K.S. Iyengar.
