A Schneider Family Award Honor Book for Middle Grade

From Newbery Medal honoree and #1 New York Times bestselling author Jason Reynolds comes a hilarious, hopeful, and action-packed middle grade novel about the greatest young superhero you’ve never heard of, filled with illustrations by Raúl the Third!

Portico Reeves’s superpower is making sure all the other superheroes—like his parents and two best friends—stay super. And safe. Super safe. And he does this all in secret. No one in his civilian life knows he’s actually…Stuntboy!

But his regular Portico identity is pretty cool, too. He lives in the biggest house on the block, maybe in the whole city, which basically makes it a castle. His mom calls where they live an apartment building. But a building with fifty doors just in the hallways is definitely a castle. And behind those fifty doors live a bunch of different people who Stuntboy saves all the time. In fact, he’s the only reason the cat, New Name Every Day, has nine lives.

All this is swell except for Portico’s other secret, his not-so-super secret. His parents are fighting
all the time. They’re trying to hide it by repeatedly telling Portico to go check on a neighbor “in the meantime.” But Portico knows “meantime” means his parents are heading into the Mean Time which means they’re about to get into it, and well, Portico’s superhero responsibility is to save them, too—as soon as he figures out how.

Only, all these secrets give Portico the worry wiggles, the frets, which his mom calls anxiety. Plus, like all superheroes, Portico has an arch-nemesis who is determined to prove that there is nothing
super about Portico at all.

I read this book to my sons (ages 6 and 4), and we loved it! It describes anxiety in ways that young children can understand, and I love how the author so perfectly captured the way that imagination is intertwined into every aspect of a child’s life. This book is funny and sweet and just a little bit sad, and I enjoyed it just as much as my kids. We’re looking forward to the sequel!

In true Jason Reynolds’s style, Stuntboy captures the essence of a slightly over-the-top, definitely ADHD, young man finding his way through family turmoil. I bought this book because I have a student who could have been the model for this story, including his own superhero identity. After reading it, my young man said, “I get why you gave me this book. He’s just like me. I LOVED it!” Mr. Reynolds writes about real people. Stuntboy does not disappoint. So very happy to have this addition to my school library.

We bought this book for our 7 year old boy who is a strong reader and enjoys reading, but usually we need to remind him to read. He can’t put this book down. It is definitely a challenging read for him, but he is very engaged. I can’t speak to the content of the book other than to say it is beautifully illustrated and that it is very engaging for a young boy.

I’ve struggled to find reading material that my 8yo kids will sit to consume to help discuss the pending divorce of their parents. This book captivated our nighttime reading together and was so well written! Jason Reynolds has done it again!

Fabulous journey into the life of young Stuntboy and their friends. The illustrations in this book are some of Raul the Third's best, which is saying ALOT! Anyone who grew up in the 80's and 90's loving hip hop will see some familiar looking styles on the neighbors. Highly recommended.

I bought this book for my 9 year old granddaughter. When it arrived we took turns reading a few page's together. We got to the 3rd chapter before I had to return home. I asked her 2 weeks later if she had been reading the book, she sheepishly said, no because it was a little too emotional for her. But she would keep it to share with her emotional little brother. LOL

This is a great look into what it’s like to try to understand that shaky feeling in your gut and come to terms with your parents divorce. Wonderful book with so many good characters.

My 3rd graders love this book. The mix of graphic novel with realistic fiction and relatable characters made this a great choice for us.
