My Brain is a Race Car: A children's guide to a neuro-divergent brain Paperback – January 9, 2023
Purchase options and add-ons
Created and inspired by my daughters ADHD diagnosis, I wanted to gift her a book that help explained her brain's processes and needs. No big words or acronyms that result in 'what does that mean' and bring the child out of the story.
"Brains are just like cars, they all drive round and round a track, picking up information and then bringing it back. Some brains are Race Cars that like to drive extra fast. Sometimes though, they forget to sop and fully complete a task.'
But driving cars fast all the time and not servicing or maintaining them leads to overheating and burnout.
We can apply that same logic to our brains.
I am so proud of this book, and sharing with friends I have been told the same principles talked about in this book apply to their children who are on the spectrum.
What this book is:
An explanation of common traits in a neurodivergent brain
Giving SELF regulation tools to the child to use themselves to assist with the plan and treatment around them
A book to open conversation between you and the child about their individual selves and why you both do what you do to manage and assist and uplift.
What this book is not:
Going to explain treatment or management approaches as that is an individual or tailored experience.
Going to specify traits in detail as once again it is again so individual.

My one complaint is the page about "food choices." A lot of ADHDers have sensory aversions that make eating certain foods more difficult - meaning that the "healthy foods" shown may not be possible for us to eat. For some ADHD children, showing narrow types of food as being what they should eat could hurt. Not all ADHD children have food aversions, or would be bothered by that page, however.
Back to the positives about this book: I think that it could really help fight the idea that an atypical brain is somehow defective. I really like how the book showed some of the struggles an ADHD brain has in such an understanding and caring way, instead of describing the protagonist as misbehaving.

I seriously love this book BUT be careful ordering off Amazon. I ordered mine and the spine was broken in two places, and there were tears. The handling of this book was SO poor on Amazon's part.
Thank you, Nell, from bottom of my heart. This book really means a lot to me.
I got it for my 2yr old car loving nephew, but as an audhd adult I felt so seen, and actually cried reading this 🥹 Such a good book, thanks Nell

Edit: changed the review from two stars to 1 star. I asked for a replacement, sent the faulty book back and... Surprise, it came with 4 blank pages at the end too. So I did some research and it seems the book it's not missing any pages. So why would the put those extra pages? Why would the description say 28 pages when 4 of them are empty? That's misleading and it made me waste my time looking for an answer somewhere else and doing some returns. And the worst thing, it was printed in the UK by Amazon. So, 24 pages printed for 10 pounds, which is not even cheap, and they cannot remove the last 4 empty pages so it looks profesional? Unacceptable
Edit 2: changed my review from 1 to 4 stars, since I guess the author is not directly at fault for the extra blank pages. It it would be printed correctly I would give 5 stars.
