Ellen Bristol

About the author

Ellen Bristol calls herself a "nut for metrics and a performance-management geek." After graduating from a long sales career in corporate America, Ellen began to consult with nonprofit organizations, and in the process discovered a lack of attention to managing the productivity of the fundraising effort. Her Leaky Bucket Assessment for Effective Fundraising, an online method for evaluating staff fundraising productivity, now boasting more than 2700 responses, proves her suspicions - global averages show troublesome results. To tackle the problem and improve nonprofit and NGO survivability, Ellen champions the use of strategic disciplines adapted from the highest-performing corporate sales organization to improve fundraising performance. Her trademarked methodology is described in Fundraising the SMART Way: Predictable, Consistent Income Growth for Your Charity, published by John Wiley & Sons. In it, she calls for a revolution in the way fundraising is managed, not the way it is done, bolstering her insights with data from her own on-line assessment. in 2019, Ellen co-authored a powerfu guide to nonprofit strategic planning, Success Planning for Nonprofits: Evidence-Based strategic Planning, along with Rebecca Staton-Reinstein PhD. The guide includes best-in-class techniques complying with the standards of performance excellence. The guide comes with a companion website including all the techniques, templates and guidelines for effective strategic planning on your own or with a facilitator. Ellen co-authored The Leaky Bucket: What's Wrong with Your Fundraising and How You Can Fix It, a CharityChannel Press publication with Linda Lysakowski ACFRE, a legend in the fundraising business. Her ebooks include De-Mystifying Fundraising: Seven Steps to Fundraising Success, and The MythBusters Handbook: Five Myths that Slow Down Sales and How to Avoid Them.
