The closer she comes to uncovering the truth, the more she unwittingly puts those she loves at risk. Someone from Gwen’s past doesn’t appreciate the new life she’s built for herself and is willing to do anything it takes to tear it apart. I read this book in a day. I could not put it down. Ms. Caine quickly draw you in with a very real character. The story is very tense from the get go. Every emotion Gwen emotes feels real and not awkward. This story also highlights a side of life no one really thinks about. I read in horror of the abuse Gwen put herself through daily. Not many (at least in my limited experience) thinks about the fallout for families of serial killers. The death threats, the hate mail, the vandalism. Gwen does a very admirable job trying to protect her children from a horrible but unfortunately all to real world. Gwen is a very strong female character but Caine makes her human with the mistakes she has made. Gwen grows as a woman and a mother. I absolutely cannot wait for the second book. If you like to read suspense, thrillers, or mysteries this is definitely the book for you. I can guarantee you will not be disappointed.

Hmph. Everyone rants and raves about this book, swears it's amazing but...it's a slow burn.

This book is about a woman who's husband is a serial killer and she had no idea. She played housewife and he killed women in their garage. Her husband goes to jail and she takes their kids and run..eight times. They land at a small town in a lake house. Keep to themselves. Meet a few people. That's it.

Review: I don't know what to really say other than I feel bummed out. This was suppose to be a thriller but I'm bored. I read up until fifty percent and I was still waiting for something exciting to happen. It didn't. It's a very slow slow slow book. All I read was Gina and her kids live in a small town somewhere. Her kids hate it but Gina had to take them and run from her serial killer husband who's in jail. She reads hate mail from people who wish them harm because her husband killed women . Gina met the local detectives when a woman winds up dead in the lake behind their house in a similar way her husband would kill women. Gina also meets Sam who's ex army. All you read up to fifty percent is Gina and her kids new life and how Gina is paranoid. There isn't anything thrilling. Let me guess...the thrill kicks in at seventy percent? No thanks. I'm good.

Conclusion: I dnf because it's boring. I read halfway and nothing happened. I give this a three for being okay. I'm sure something happens but at that point I wasted my time.

Three out of five.

Let me start out by saying that Rachel Caine is an excellent writer. Her prose is concise, controlled, and chillingly violent when the occasion calls for it. This is the first book of hers I’ve read, and I enjoyed it immensely. I especially liked her protagonist, Gina Royal, who is single-minded in her determination to protect her children and herself from the memory of her soulless ex-husband and the thousands of trolls now pursuing the family on social media. Quite a challenge for a former housewife whose main concerns used to be centered around seeing her children off to school and putting dinner on the table.

If you like tense thrillers, I can say with confidence that you will enjoy Stillhouse Lake—with one caveat. For me, when someone says “serial killer,” I expect a high body count. I mean, that’s kind of what they do, right? And though Gina’s ex-husband, Mel, does live up to his reputation, most of it is in backstory. In fact, Caine spends most of the first half of the book on Gina’s inner life. By the time we get to the new peril she finds herself in, we know her intimately—a good thing if you enjoy believable characters. I only wish the author had peppered the introspection with a bit more action, that’s all I’m saying.

All in all, a terrific read. Can’t wait for the next book in the series.

I've now read both books. Loved them. The story moves along, the plot has twists i don't see coming. The character development is the best. Can't wait for the next one!

This is my first book by this author and I am sold! Totally enjoyed the read even though I was perched on the edge of my seat for most of it LOL. I received this book as a Prime pre-release and am so glad I chose it. Will certainly be pre-ordering book 2 which comes out in December 2017. Thank you Rachel!

I fuss a lot about editing (grammar, punctuation, absolutely incorrect words ie rein vs reign) and was pleasantly surprised here - for anyone else with my same pet peeves.

I'm an avid reader. Mostly romance. But this book popped up and I thought I'd give it a try. OMG! It definitely pulled me in and had me intrigued. I think I'm going to have to switch things up and start reading more than the typical romance. I'll be coming back for more of this story and anything Rachel Caine.

I really enjoy this author. The story draws me in. The only negative for me is the mean-spiritness of the portrayal of Midwesterners as intolerant racists. I'm a southern implant into the Midwest and in 17 years I have seen the opposite. My small town loves and welcomes anyone different. I haven't seen the red neck racist things the author describes. Quite the opposite.

This was my June first pick book. It was the only one that sounded ok. Boy, am I glad I picked it. This book is hard to put down. It keeps you on the edge of your seat all the way through. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys this genre. I was disappointed to find the cliff hanger at the end as there was no mention at the time that it was a two book series. However, I just pre-ordered the second book that comes out in December.

Even if cliff hangers bother you, you should still READ THIS BOOK!!! It is that well written. I only hope the next book keeps up the pace and is as good as this one.

I had my wife, a photographer, start reading it and she complained she had put off working on her pictures because she couldn't put it down.

So, don't wait any longer, buy this book today. You won't be sorry.
