What Is TDS And Why Should You Care

TDS = Total Dissolved Solids, which is any salt, metal or mineral in the water. The lower the TDS level in the water, the more efficiently your bodys cells can use the water. Conversely, higher TDS levels can indicate water that is more difficult for your body to use and has more contaminants that can pose health risks.

I work in a field where we work on reverse osmosis machines and was wanting something just for just a quick and dirty check not for official calibrations or maintenance. This is actually decently accurate on the low end 0-20uS/ppm. Mine was only off by 1uS. Not as accurate on the high side. It was off by almost 50 at 300uS. This was versus a really expensive calibrated meter. I havent had a chance to use calibration solution to check it yet. I will probably try 10 and 100uS and see how it does.

Wow, first I tested a brand new bottle of drinking water from the store. It only read 4 parts per million of contaminates, very good 👍. Then I tested the water coming outta the faucet in my travel trailer I live in, in an county park. I had also just replaced the inline filter that morning, and it still failed miserably as expected. It read in at 567ppm of contaminates, well into the red zone. Any reading over 500 can make you extremely ill. I'm gonna say this little gauge is working very well. Worth every penny.

Overall, this appears to be a solid TDS reader. It is lightweight, easy to read, and the background colors are incredibly helpful (green for safe, red for nope don't drink it).

The reason for my 3/5 star rating has to do with the accuracy. I tested the tester (say that 10 times fast) on water from my sink in a clean cup. After noting the first value, I ran several consecutive trials. The initial value wasn't replicable & often varied in a range between 1 to 20 from the initial value. Over the course of several days I tested it on a number of differing water sources, again with varying results. The values did stay within a certain range, however.

Initially I had wanted to return it, but then ultimately realized that despite the lack of consistency in the readings it is good enough for what I am using it for, which is testing water from my ZeroWater filter to determine when to change the filter. This is because the TDS reader included with ZeroWater filters is wildly inaccurate & obviously poorly made. I found that when relying on the ZeroWater TDS reader to know when to change filters, my water starts tasting like fish... But when using this water tester & taking the average of 3 trials, I am able to change the filter before I start tasting that gross fishy taste.

Overall, for a consumer's average use that doesn't require extreme accuracy, I would recommend this product.

Please note that your mileage may vary & my own tester's variability could be attributed to a variety of things including a manufacturing defect, overheating due to shipping, or user error.

Thanks for reading & I hope my review helps you! :)
