Only had this and it's matching leash for a few months. The three rivets on the collar are popped. So the leash will fall apart soon. You'd figure a leash guaranteed for the life of a dog wouldn't pop rivets this soon.Edit: They're sending a replacement. Perhaps it's just a fluke. We'll see. Otherwise the leash and collar are/were great.

I bought this Mendota collar five years ago for our dog Tilly. She’s worn it every day, including dozens of woodland hunting trips. It’s taken a beating including snow, mud, rain and a fair amount of swimming. It has had no maintenance, and it still looks great (in a rugged, functional way). So I ordered another for our 7 mo old puppy. It looks just like the first one, and I expect it to be just as durable and handsome over time.

I was looking for a collar with a leash hook on the back rather than under the neck which is where the buckle/leach hook always seems to end up. My blue heeler pup does not like getting the leash hooked under the neck and when I am walking her, the leash seems to stay "under the neck" with a regular collar. This collar is very well made and has the ring at the back of the neck which solved both problems. The leash stays at the back of the head normally (unless she is playing on leash) and it is easy to hook to. I am very happy with this purchase.

As others have mentioned, this collar is different from the one pictured. I knew this when I bought it and got what I wanted. It has a break with an O-ring in the middle of the collar which makes it really easy to quickly clip the leash on because it always rests at the back of your dog's neck. This was our puppy's first collar, and he's outgrown it now so we will likely buy another one. If you've ever cleaned horse tack you'll know how important it is to maintain leather products. We clean and condition this collar regularly and it's become soft and well-oiled with use. The stitching is still in perfect condition and reminds me of English bridle leather.

I got one and liked it, and then eventually got a second, larger one for my other dog. These are excellent, well-made collars. My first order has lasted a few years already, and has done well in standing up to my dogs' rough-housing. Though, I don't let my dogs chew these collars, as they are leather. I expect study, but I don't expect indestructible.

The tag says that these collars are made in the USA, but they do come with a warning about lead content. The ambiguity of how much lead content is in it is why I rated the collar a 4/5, instead of as a perfect 5/5. Lead increases the machinability of brass, which is why it's in the buckles, and it's also supposed to help with durability and rust resistance. BUT how much lead is put into brass can vary widely. Since this product is going to be around a living creature's neck, and for a long time too, I'd like to know the percentage of lead in the metal. The lack of transparency on that point does bother me.

For safety's sake, I like that the "hunt" collar has "a center “safety” ring to relieve pressure when caught." I'm hoping that'll never be needed, but it's nice to know it's got the feature.

At about $33, it's a pricey collar, and of course I'd like to be able to pay less for a quality collar. You may be able to find cheaper ones out there, if you really hunt around. However, I checked local stores, online, and this was the best I was able to find. The 1st collar was ordered directly from Amazon. The 2nd collar was ordered through a 3rd-party seller on Amazon, "Truemark." I bought the collar on Amazon, because the price isn't cheaper from the manufacturer's website. However, it may be cheaper if they've got a sale going when YOU want to purchase it. So, I suggest keeping that in mind, and maybe checking Mendota's own website. Right now, their site just says "Free shipping on U.S orders over $35.00," which means that right now, unless you're buying something else Mendota makes too, then shipping cost makes it cheaper to get the collar here if you've already got free shipping here.
