To Dream Of Shadows: A Gripping Holocaust Novel Inspired by a Heartbreaking True Story (World War II Historical Fiction Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 1,143 ratings

She’ll save hundreds of lives. But can she save her own?

Inspired by a previously untold true story.

1943, Eastern Europe. A kind-hearted 18-year-old, Inge is imprisoned in some godforsaken hellhole for the crime of simply existing. She used to dream of strawberry ice cream, of going dancing on a weekend, of one day traveling the world. Yet today, her every waking moment is consumed by beatings, starvation, and torturous labor.

A disillusioned SS sergeant, Heinz can’t help but question the Third Reich’s philosophy because of the dumbfounding incidents he’s witnessed. Now, he yearns to forsake his duty, to run away with his dog, to live a life to be proud of. But he can’t, leaving him trapped in a world choking on endless suffering, misery, and death.

So when the Jew and the Nazi meet, even though they exist on opposite sides of the deadly electrified fence, they each recognize a kindred spirit. An unlikely friendship develops. A friendship which sends waves of compassion rippling through the entire camp, saving lives, giving hope, easing suffering. For a fleeting moment, there is beauty in a world drenched in ugliness.

But then the moment is gone, and darkness returns. And Inge and Heinz must pay a terrible price for foolishly believing they could make a difference.

Yet it’s in this blackest of nights that the tiniest spark can cast the brightest light…

Inspired by a previously untold true story, To Dream Of Shadows is an epic tale of sacrifice, love, and the strength of the human spirit. And due to its extensive research, it is probably the most realistic portrayal of camp life that you'll ever read in a novel.

Discover one of the most heartwarming, heartbreaking, and heroic tales of the Holocaust.

Warning: the truth can be shocking.

To Dream of Shadows reveals elements of the Holocaust that most readers will never have encountered, no matter how much Holocaust fiction or non-fiction they have read.
The forms of abuse and punishments described in the story were not invented by the author but are based on documented evidence, i.e.
these things really happened to real people in real camps.
Though these elements of the story are handled with sensitivity and restraint, it can be shocking to discover that such incidents took place.

> Heartwarming dog stories

> Gripping historical fiction

> Pulse-pounding thrillers

I’ve hand-fed a wild orangutan in a rainforest, explored exotic locations such as Machu Picchu, and sparred with a monk at a Shaolin temple. As you can tell, I love seeking out extraordinary adventures. So what more appropriate profession could I find than writing — creating wondrous worlds filled with fascinating characters?

I’ve been a full-time author since 2016 and write in multiple genres — you’ll find my books crammed with either adorable mutts who’ll melt your heart, justice-seeking antiheroes, or heartbreaking tales inspired by true stories from the Holocaust.

I pen my novels in the North of England, where I live with my Polish partner and two stray black cats who turned up in our garden one day and liked it so much they moved into the house.

So whether you love to curl up with heartwarming tales about lovable dogs, gritty, action-packed thrillers, or heart-wrenching stories from history’s darkest hour, I hope you’ll join me on my literary journey.

Happy reading,

Steve

The story is about Inge being forcibly removed to a horrendous concentration camp during WWII. I won't go into more of the story, as other excellent observations are in the comment section.

This well-written book required a tremendous about of research; it shows on each and every page.

I admit there are some pretty grim pages of the atrocities inflicted on the women in the concentration camp. WWII was a very unsettling time and tough on people. Mr. Lee is a master at helping the reader make emotional contact with the main characters. As I said there is Inge AND there is the leader of the Camp, Rudi who is learning Jews are humans, not vermin.

This is an epic historical and fictional tale of compassion, sacrifice, and love, and the amazing spirit of endurance the human spirit contains.

Don't skip the author's comments at the end of the book. He provides knowledge about the people the story is based on and the difficulties he encountered.

This is a two-part series of books. I loved this one so much, I have pre-ordered the second one: A Song of Silence

I found this book meticulously researched, beautifully written, and a very compelling read.

To Dream of Shadows tackled an extremely well known and heavily documented subject that is the Holocaust in this engaging story. Steve N. Lee is a wonderful writer and I ate this book up. Truthfully, I have read countless books on the Holocaust and World War 2, both fiction and non-fiction, and I was desperately searching for an exciting and well written story. Truthfully, for every unforgettable literary experience that exists, there are at least 5 maddeningly unreadable books masquerading as "gripping, heartbreaking, unforgettable" books destined to be best sellers. Cautiously optimistic when I began this book, but not expecting sparks, I knew after chapter 2 that this book would be a drink of fresh water in my current reading desert. I am honestly thrilled that this book was MUCH BETTER than I was expecting. Not only was it engrossing and well written, it gave me hope that I have not, as I truly despaired, read all the best World War 2 and Holocaust fiction ever written and that I would have to settle for mediocre and stale stories. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because I rate most fiction by comparing it to my most beloved and 5 star literary giants that include authors Ken Follett, Alice Hoffman, Simon Seabag Montefiore, and Leigh Bardugo. A rating of one star less than I would give my favorite author, Ken Follett, is a true testament of author, Steve Lee's, ability to create an unforgettable story. And, no, I was not paid to write this review. I just want to give credit where credit is due. Enjoy!

I couldn’t put it down. It made the story so real. Then I realized it was real with fictional characters. Well written and exciting to the end. I can’t wait to read his next book.

The author states he tried not to glamoroize the story but many of the details were a bit far fetched at the beginning of the relationship. Overall a good read but many parts made Inge's behaviors unbelievable based on true accounts of Nazi torture.

I really enjoyed this book, once started it was hard to put down. This is a great book for reading right now given the growing antisemitism. People are people no matter what the differences.

I am thoroughly intrigued by WWII historical fiction. My father served in the Air Force during that time, but despite his experiences, little was ever shared with us, his family. Unfortunately, even our education in the60s revealed scantly-little about the war, particularly about the horrors of Nazi Germans and their desire to overtake a “purified” world. It’s only by understanding these horrors will we be able to prevent history repeating itself.

The story follows Inge who learns very quickly how to adapt in order to survive the horrors the Nazi's inflict on ' subhumans'.
Alongside this, there is Rudi, second in command of a concentration camp, and his faithful, obedient dog, Bruno. I found myself questioning, how could I like this man? when he is SS.
They come together when Inge - and other women - are marched on a harrowing journey to join this camp.
Knowing they can never openly be together, Rudi hatches a daring plan which has equal chances of success and failure.
Will they succeed? And have the life they deserve. Or is the plan too flawed? Rudi knows they won't be 'lucky' enough to have a straight forward execution if caught!
I thoroughly recommend you read their story.

Very much enjoyed this book and would highly recommend it. The book was full of suspense and well researched. Some of the details were horrific but it never felt unrealistic. The characters were believable and having read many books set around the Holocaust, this is definitely one of the very best ones.
