Sparo Rising: Mason of York Kindle Edition

4.7 4.7 out of 5 stars 93 ratings

Sparo Rising is a spinoff series from the Techromancy Scrolls. Each book features a standalone story of a different side character from the Techromancy Scrolls that readers wished to hear more about. This second book centers around Genevieve Mason of York, and her rise to Knighthood.

Almost three thousand years after an extinction level event on Earth, mankind seeks to regain its former glory, in a new world where magic and technology collide.

The life of Genevieve Mason, a commoner and serf of the Realm of York, in the Lower Ten of Sparo, had been turned upside down when she was young. Being the daughter of a mason, she always knew her place in the cogs of the wheel of life, until the Keep came under siege by the Reaper and his Horde of Marauders.

She was saved at the gates when York fell, by a huge muscular female Squire from the neighboring realm of Wexbury, Verna. This woman had taken a killing axe blow meant for her, and yet stood, saving Gen from an untimely demise.

That set the course for her life, as she aspired to be like Verna and champion the weak, to challenge the stars to change her own destiny and become one of the greatest Knights of York.

I got my start writing novels by accident. I have always been drawn to strong female characters in books, like Honor Harrington. And I also believe that there is a lack of LGBT characters in media. So one day I came up with a story idea that combines the two... two days later I completed the manuscript for Music of the Soul.

Each of my books features strong likable female characters that are flawed. I think that flaws and emotional or physical scars make us human and give us more character than simply conforming to some "social norm".

I write in many genres including romance, scifi, fantasy, paranormal, dystopian, and even cozy mysteries.

My most ambitions undertaking is the Techromancy Scrolls series that is an epic adventure in the world three thousand years after a mass extinction event. Mankind is rebuilding in a world where magic and technology collide.

I loved the “Mason of York”. The story was well played and the main characters well developed, so I felt like I knew them. I was disappointed that the story didn’t go on forever.

Loved reading about Gen and how she came to be a knight. I really enjoyed the fact that she looked up to Verna and was able to make her proud. After all it isn’t every day that one can change her station. I love the fact that another commoner even one without a spark came to be knighted.

I just love all the Sparo books , well worth the time to read them all. Great characters and I really enjoy learning how each individual became knights to begin with. Looking forward to see what Erik comes out with next.

I always get so exited when there is a new book in the world of Sparo. Loved hearing more of Genevieve's story after first hearing about her in Westlands. Great job Erik, loved it

Oh my. Lady Gen is something else! Adorable, mighty, awkward, adjectives abound. A great tale about a favorite side character. Don't miss the epilogue!

Spinoff of earlier series giving backstory of a secondary character. Frankly the story is not particularly interesting, but the epilogue at the end giving a window into descendants of main character from far more interesting.

I found this story so entertaining and enjoyable to read. It gives a little of everything that happens in Genevieve Mason's life and the reason she became a knight. It shows how close her interaction with Mountain Gypsies she and that she engaged to one. I was little confused how when Lady Gen would interact with people in th present she would have flash backs of her past. Though it didn't deter my opinion of this book. I recommend this book to everyone that loved the Techromancy Scrolls series.

Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 30, 2021
Another addition to this great spinoff series. It works well as a standalone book as it focuses on the story of Gen Mason of York. Those who have read the other books will get to see historical scenes told from a different perspective. As always the characters are great the humour is funny and the action scenes are great.
