Most people on here seem to recommend a 20-30kg to start. I ordered a 60kg thinking I would grow into it. However it was very easy to do the standard palms down bends to touch your hands together and really only good for doing fast high rep workouts of 20 or more.
Im old. Nearly 50. Don’t work out. Have multiple bad shoulder injuries. Lifting my arms hurt without any weight. Generally weaker than most people due to nerve and muscle problems. Yet the 60kg is too easy.
So I would recommend if you are a guy over 12 years old you may want to consider starting with the 80kg as a minimum so you have some room to improve. I don’t feel any muscle workout from bending these things so I would probably think standard weights to lift would be better but those are expensive.
I am 5'6'' and weigh a lean 138lb. As a former U.S Army Paratrooper, fitness is nothing new to me; you don't need to be big to be strong. That being said, it can be difficult to gauge which one of these to start with. I first bought the 80KG on January 26, 2019, but I couldn't bend that at all and it still remains to be my strength goal. Since I couldn't bend 80KG, I bought the 40KG on January 29, 2019, which seemed too easy for me to bend it full circle, but it was still good for overhead exercises. On February 4, 2019, I bought the 50KG which was perfect and so I stuck with that for about a month. Then I recently received the 60KG, which is excellent for my current level of strength and I am able to bend it full circle for multiple reps. I don't believe that I would be able to bend the 60KG if I hadn't worked up to it since early February. Every once in a while, I pick up the 80KG to test my progress; I'm pleased to say that I can finally make it budge, but it is a Beast and I'm still far away from being able to bend it to any satisfactory degree. It would have been better if there was a 70KG option because I'm fairly confident that I would be able to bend it for 1 to 3 reps. Anyway, I have to warn you that I've experienced pain in my palm, wrists, and especially elbows when I use these things TOO often. It's very gratifying to bend these things, particularly when you're angry about something....but you will definitely increase the likelihood of strained or sprained muscles if you use them every day. For me, the most common injury was the kind that causes a sharp pain in the elbow or forearm whenever you rotate your hand or grip your first; like when turning a door knob or opening a jelly jar. I suppose the technical term is tennis elbow, it's an agonizing injury and it can take several days to recover from it...so you've got to take it easy with resistance bars of this nature and try not to go rage mode with them; I would advise against using them every day because that was my biggest contributing factor to my injuries. They are incredible workout tools if you use them correctly and avoid overworking your arms and hands.
First of all, it's too short. It should be at least 6 to 12 inches longer. Second, the handles have a raised lip at the ends which can be uncomfortable after a few reps, and since the spring is so short you kinda have to hold it at the ends, so if it were longer this would not be as much of an issue. Otherwise this is a decent workout tool.
Not to brag, but when I was younger I had great upper body shape and fitness, and I think I owe it all to the spring bar. Just this one tool can help you develop and maintain your pecs, abs, biceps, triceps, trapezius, deltoids, and external obliques. Not bad for a tool that costs less than $30, weighs only a few pounds, has no moving parts, can be carried just about anywhere, and never wears out.
I consider this one of the best workout tools ever. I give this particular model only 3 stars because of its shortcomings, both literally and figuratively, but I highly recommend buying one. You won't regret it and you'll get decades of use out of it, which means it will pay for itself many times over.
