I bought the vinyl version and have enjoyed it immensely. How can you not like one of the great (and unappreciated) American songwriters together with an accomplished guitar player and educator revisiting these wonderful tunes? So John’s voice isn’t what is was when these songs were first recorded. I think it adds to the charm and intimacy of the recording. Highly recommended if you’re a fan of the Spoonful. I’m sure they had a great time making this record.

First of all, I want it to be known that John's voice is nowhere near the way it was in the 60s and 70s. Keeping this in mind, this CD is a nice relaxing revisit to the Spoonful's tunes. John has several people sharing the vocals (as many aging performers are doing) and he does a decent job singing rather low and sometimes almost a whisper. There are 14 tracks:
1. Lovin' You
2. Darlin' Companion
3. Daydream
4. Jug Band Music
5. Four Eyes
6. Younger Girl
7. Rain On The Roof
8. Didn't Want To Have To Do It
9. Did You Ever Have To Make Up Your Mind?
10. Do You Believe In Magic?
11. Nashville Cats
12. You Didn't Have To Be So Nice
13. Stories We Could Tell
14. Darling Be Home Soon
Tracks 3, 6, 7, 10 and 12 are instrumentals. My favorite is 14. If you can get past John's diminished voice, you will like this album. If you are a Spoonful fan like me, you will want to add this to your collection.

Two fine musicians, a setlist of near legendary songs, and a stellar supporting cast pay tribute to John B. Sebastian's songwriting skills. Nice enough idea, especially since he's one of America's greatest living tunesmiths. By a group of Sebastian's '60s / '70s contemporaries and / or some of the many artists he's influenced through the years it'd make perfect sense. But with him (and his decades-long damaged vocals) leading the way, I have just one question -- Why bother? These recordings not only don't touch the sound and glory of the originals (Spoonful or solo), they're not even in the parking lot outside the ballpark. I've often wondered why he didn't let bygones by bygones and re-join the Spoons once his voice was gone; Joe Butler could still sing pretty well and Sebastian could've led a twilight version of his career peak band through a grace note ending. Instead, he unleashes another recording showcasing his diminished vocal approach. Three stars for the songs and musicianship. Recommended for diehards only.

The Sixties were a long time ago, and John Sebastian today doesn't sound like he did back then. But that's okay. This is an album of retelling, taking some old L.S. songs and reinterpreting them as instrumentals, or with a softer acoustic vibe. One exciting addition is the MonaLisa Twins singing backup on several songs. The Twins, who came to fame on Youtube for remaking so many hits of the 60s (how they and John Sebastian came to meet), are known for their exquisite harmonies which are on full display here. A personal favorite is Nashville Cats, sung here by Arlen Roth and the Twins, who do a convincing Tennessee twang accent, especially for a couple of Austrian natives now living in Liverpool. Speaking of Roth, his daughter does a great turn with "I Didn't Want to Do It," an album highlight.

Arlen Roth is arguably the best guitarist in America. His work includes over a decade writing for Guitar Player magazine, 20 or more theory and techniques for every type of music, and having several lines of custom guitars licensed by best quality manufacturers.
John Sebastian has penned some of the best pop/rock music in the 60's and 70's with Lovin' Spoonful and on his own.
Together these great legends put a solid album that demonstrates excellence in popular music!

Wonderful album, The entire album is great.

Unfortunately for John Sebastian, life dealt him a very cruel hand, an irreversible throat condition, which has robbed him of his beautiful voice. While he’s still a very skilled guitarist and first-rate harmonica player, trying to recapture the glory of the past failed him.

All songs are done wonderfully. John used the MonaLisa Twins on some songs as backup harmonies and they are just WOW! The other singers are also spectacular. Definitely buy this. You will not be dissapointed!

Not Enough Sebastian

Everyone knows that JB has had voice problems, and his past voice is long gone - so it is a sad day that his participation vocally is less than satisfactory. The good news is that his Harmonica playing is as good as ever - and of course, the quality of those timeless and perfect songs.

A very well produced album with several standout instrumental versions of John Sebastian's songs. Arlen Roth's guitar playing is excellent throughout. John's voice is showing signs of age but this adds to the charm of the record.
