Great if you don't have leaves, awful if you do
The Zodiac Mx6 is a small tracked (vs. wheeled) automatic pool cleaner. The suction from your pump drives the gears that turn the tracks. The version I bought came with the vacuum, the hose, the leaf catcher and a couple of different hose adapters. My pool set-up: 12' x 24' rectangular, above-ground, Intex vinyl pool. I've added an after market Hayward Dyna-Skim skimmer, a vacuum port, a three-way Jandy valve to separate the dedicated vacuum port line, sand filter and pump (both of which came with the pool) and finally connected everything via 1 1/2" PVC utilizing in-line shut-off valves galore.I'm halfway through my second season with this vacuum and here's my take-away: unless you have a supremely powerful pump, don't buy this vacuum. A strong pump may be able to power though the leaves and keep the thing moving. I say "may" because I just don't know if the drive mechanism in the vacuum is up to it.The Pros:Affordable, all required components to vacuum your pool are included, the leaf catcher works exceptionally, works in above ground pools (if you've done the extra bit to add a skimmer or vacuum ports to your above ground set-up), lightweightThe Cons: 1) The hoses come in 3' segments that don't actually seal well together. Because they don't seal well, the vacuum loses suction power. Because it loses suction power, the drive gears don't work well and you don't get a good clean. I solved this by discarding the included hose altogether and opted for an "off-the-shelf" pool hose from my local hardware store. 2) The drive system is in-line with the hose port providing suction. The drive system has little paddles that move via the suction from your pump. They are enclosed in a tightly conformed sphere with little tolerance for larger items (ie: leaves). It's hard to explain in writing. The suction pulls directly through the middle of the vacuum. The paddles are directly in the middle of the vacuum in the suction path. It's the suction that turns the paddles, thereby turn the drive gears that make the whole thing move. I have Live Oak trees which produce small oblong leaves, roughly 1 to 2 inches long and roughly 1/4 to 5/8 inch wide. They invariably get stuck between the paddle and the outer wall of the paddle enclosure, bringing the paddles to a standstill, thus stopping the whole vacuuming operation. 3) Twist lock connectors on everything. This is why the hose didn't work well. The segments of hose just didn't seal well. And, twist lock type hoses don't exist in the market place. While you can remove the twist lock on the vacuum to connect a regular hose, you can't remove the twist lock on the leaf catcher. You can, however, force a hose into the inlet side of the leaf catcher, ignoring the twist lock feature. You cannot, however, do the the same on the outlet side of the hose. You must buy an adapter to connect it to your vacuum port or your skimmer basket attachment. An adapter does come with the kit, but it's not flexible and reduces the flow of the outlet side of the catcher, further reducing the water flow and suction. 4) The vacuum isn't heavy enough. Granted, one of the nice things is that's it's lightweight, though this works against it, in the end. The vacuum just doesn't have enough weight for good traction to pull a heavy, water filled hose through water well.
