I have a fairly good set up as far as noise goes. I have a good power supply for the effect pedals, all modern effect pedals, fairly good cabling and have put some shielding in the pickup cavity. The noise from the gain on my drive pedal was all coming from my single coil pickups. Turn the volume right down on the guitar and the noise would go.
This pedal allows me to get a fair bit more gain without the noise. Compared to reviews on youtube etc I only need a small amount of threshold for it to work so I can't say I've noticed any difference in tone with or with out it. The sustain seems pretty good as well depending on how much threshold you dial in. To maximise sustain I have it set such that a little bit of noise is evident as the notes die off before the gate really starts to kick in and then increase the threshold a touch more.
The pedal is relative small compared to a lot of pedals, though not the micro pedals around now, and seems well built. As with a lot of MXR pedals there is a rubber boot for the threshold knob if you need to tweak the threshold with your foot which you may do if you use differing levels of gain.
The smart gate lets a little hum thru but ALL of my tone is still intact. For a high gain rig, it's a no brianer of a trade off.
Overall a great unit, and in my opinion, a better unit than the isp
In short: I definitely recommend MXR's Smart Gate, but I would first check out MXR's Noise Gate and see how it is in comparison.

Stuck this on my board early in the chain, and basically out of the box with minimal tweaking I now have a silent rig. The tail end of the gate as it initiates is very smooth, and with some reverb (I never really play a dry rig) I literally cannot tell the signal is gated at all. No stuttering, and I still play very light and dynamic without the gate kicking in preemptively - it's as if it magically knows exactly which sound I want to get rid of... Just set-up and forget about it pedal - probably the most valuable thing on my rig now.
