This Calphalon model is a step up, for the most part, except that the Cuisinart made a much smoother cup of espresso. The Calphalon, on the other hand, makes a better TASTING espresso cup, while the foamy texture (not the milk, the espresso) makes it more difficult to do "art" using the microfoam from the steamed milk. The Cuisinart always made a very smooth crema top to the espresso, while the Calphalon's foamy textured espresso is simply not "flat" enough to create much of anything other than a circle, so there's that. That's not a "deal breaker" for me, though, since all of my "art", produced using the Cuisinart (while it still worked) was somewhat "accidental" anyway. I'd end up with something that "looked like" something else, and used toothpicks to finalize an idea. My "artistic" ability came down to the equivalent of looking at clouds, and imagining things.
So, now that I've been using the Calphalon for a few months, I'm fully satisfied with its output, and ease of use. I've developed a routine through my daily experience of making lattes for my wife and I, and it's good enough. The flavor is better than with the Cuisinart, and I'm thinking it's because the Calphalon has some kind of temperature "governor" that keeps the espresso temperature just right.
The tamper on this one is plastic, and independent of the machine, which is a good thing, though I may decide to purchase a metal tamper, since I'm used to the weight of the one I used with the Cuisinart. The portafilter and holder are a different size than those on the Cuisinart, bigger by a few mm, so I'll have to look around for the right size metal tamper.
Other than that, there's really nothing more to mention. It's a good machine, unless you want to do the "art". I'll have to investigate, to see if there's anything I'm doing that's making the espresso foam up the way it does on the surface.
So after mentally filtering out all the people in that first category, and then all the people at the other end who would basically be happy drinking cold coffee from the pot on friday that they brewed on monday... I came to a happy middle ground of information.
I got the non grinder version of the calphalon temp iq with the intention of ordering a separate grinder later due to height constraints in my kitchen. The machine has worked amazing so far and proved very easy to use after watching some of the intructional videos on youtube. It is very easy to clean and the milk steamer has worked flawlessly so far. If you put the steam wand in at the right angle and depth and listen for that kissing sound it comes of creamy and perfect everytime.
I also hymned and hawed over the idea of finding the right coffee beans, then the right grind setting, then tamping pressure... worrying I would mess up the esspresso and make it too bitter, not have a proper "crema," etc...
I will say right now that I put some store bought tim hortons pre ground coffee in that machine, tamped it to what seemed good to me, and went on to make the best dang latte I have ever had... on my first try! I'm sure a lot of coffee/esspessro "experts" will scoff, but comparing the cup i made (and subsequent cups) with anything I have had from starbucks, upscale resturants, and many highly rated local coffee shops that roast their own beans on site my home lattes win hands down. (granted my latte art sucks but im not making these for my eyes, plus i figure i have time to learn!)
I was blown away how easy it was and how good it was and instantly gave up any notion of needing to grind my own beans. I tell you no lie that the pour and "crema," color and everything else looked like every video i could find of esspresso and it was neither too bitter nor too watered down for my palate.
I will admit that the first time it made esspresso the pour took about 50 seconds which had me worried because it appears the ideal pour is 25-30 seconds to avoid bitter or watered down esspessro. but it tasted excellent!
Just in case it is helpful, i do drink regular coffee black, and whiskey straight so i could have a stronger palate than some which means I don't notice any wrongs in the esspresso. However my wife finds 15% abv wine to taste strongly alcoholic and says the lattes I have made for her were amazing and she is not a flatter lol.
Anyways, I love and it works amazing. Hope this helps!
Top reviews from other countries
Makes excellent espresso, whether single hole basket or multiple hole basket.
Excellent milk and foam too.
Yes, aluminum portafilter a little cheap but works effectively.
Lights and buttons plus overall look of machine very nice.
Yes, Made in China... But really well thought out machine.
Everything works well. The frother does a good job with soya milk, which is what I use daily.
I have had a lot of espresso makers in the past twenty years, and this is one of the best so far.
It has a water tank and a steam wand that you have to get a thermometer to put in your milk in order to ensure you have the right temp.
You can do one or two shots of espresso that you have to grind in a separate machine.
Is this a bad thing?
Depends on what you want and your experience. I am a trained barista. I want to make drinks for my nieces I would rather be able to turn off my steam wand at 120 degrees than the machine force the milk to a predetermined temp. Or my mum wants an extra hot London fog? I would rather be able to steam it to 150 for her.
Also with fewer gadgets, it's less likely that some gauge or fuse breaks for no reason. It's just simple mechanics in this machine.
One troubleshooting thing. If your espresso won't pull fast enough, try and look through your espresso basket.
If you can see light through the holes your beans have likely been ground too fine, and the water can't filter fast enough. If you can't see light, try cleaning the basket with a toothbrush, toothpick, or worse case scenario take fire to the holes in your espresso basket, just lightly untill you hear a light popping sound. This is the sound of whatever is in there - old espresso or the plastic from manufacturing - cooking to the point of cracking, the holes in the basket can sometimes be plugged to the point that espresso wont pass through. At least this happened to me.
Also invest in a tamper, something that will give you enough pressure to allow for properly pressed espresso.
