There was a problem filtering reviews right now. Please try again later.
I just received the package today. Not only did I receive the float and straw, but all new hardware, spigots and improved collection plate w/rubber gasket to prevent the rusting/peeling. Seller went FAR above and beyond what was asked. I should have contacted them before my initial 1 star review. They are quick to work with you, to make things right, or answer questions. This improved version is, now, absolutely worth every penny spent!
Original Review: I've had this for about a year. It did not come with the storage bag, when I called to ask to have one sent, I was told they had stopped including them 6 months earlier. The lid between bottom pot, and collection plate started rusting/peeling after about the 4th use. As one reviewer said, you do need to frequently change the water in the top pot - for me the problem is more about it evaporating. Yes it gets very hot, but common sense should dictate you shouldn't be sticking your hand in there, or moving the device around while it's in use.
I don't know if mine is the only one, but sometimes when I turn the stove on, and waiting for it to heat up, the unit starts rocking around VIOLENTLY, splashing water from the top all over the place. I have no clue why this happens, so I don't know what to do to prevent it, but I'd say that's a pretty hazardous malfunction.
While I can look past the previous flaws, the main reason I bought this was to have water that doesn't taste like chlorine, or have other crap in it that doesn't belong there. I basically traded the taste of chlorine, for the the taste of plastic. I was new to water distillation, now I know better - never, never, NEVER use something that has plastic/rubber parts. The hose where the final product drips out from is made of a rubbery plastic. The final product is hot - the 'hot garden hose' reviewer was not exaggerating.
The material quality of this product is not worth over $300. It should not have rusted right away (or ever, in my opinion), it shouldn't be wobbling, and most importantly it SHOULD NOT taste like plastic for that kind of money. You can NOT send it back for a refund, exchange, or credit towards a different product if you use it even once. If you're unhappy with it, after it's first use, you basically just threw $350 down the toilet.
Still outta money for a better product, and very disappointed.
As a gravity water filter; the water never did gravity feed. Employing the included hand pump produced small amounts of flow through the filter element but to maintain flow required almost constant pumping. A small aquarium aerator pump will achieve minimal flow through the filter element but do not exceed 11-15 inches H2O pressure or you just might blow the lid off.
Incredibly inefficient as a distiller; the base tank transfers heat through the condenser (dog dish) and when the top tank reaches 160 F plus the steam just doesn't condense efficiently. There just isn't anywhere for the heat to go but up through the system. It needs more cooling in the condenser. When the system get hot, it produces a rubber smell in the distilled water, obviously from the gaskets/seals included.
I did not waste the money for a water test. I would personally challenge any statements that water is potable after following the instructions, why not publish some evidence of that? All in all I would rate it just a little bit better than nothing. Wish I could get my money back. Does anyone know how to do that???
But it fulfills my gravity water needs. I can't use it for the customers, because they keep going to the top dirty water to fill a cup rather than the bottom lol. But I pour it into a restaurant style container, with a sealing lid and it prevents curious hands from breaking the filter stem.
The included "instructions" are borderline worthless, however, and the Amazon listing really needs a makeover, but all you need to do is find their YouTube channel which has a newer assembly video for this model (not the video linked in the product description).
I plan on using this to distill seawater in a survival scenario and I am very pleased with the initial results.
