About the authors
The Berenstain Bears celebrated their 50th Anniversary in 2012.
Stan and Jan Berenstain were already successful cartoonists for magazines and adult humor books when they began writing children's books. The first story starring the bear family, The Big Honey Hunt, appeared in 1962. Since then, more than 370 Berenstain Bears books have been published, and more than 300 million copies have been sold. What began as an idea sparked by their young sons' love of reading has become over the years arguably the best-selling children's book series ever.
Since their inception, the Berenstain Bears stories have expanded to include picture books, beginning readers, and chapter books--even a hit TV show on PBS. Writing and illustrating the books has become a Berenstain family affair. Mike joined with his parents as a creative team in the late 1980s. The Bear family has expanded over the years as well. Sister Bear arrived in 1974, and baby Honey joined the family in 2000.
Though Stan died in 2005 and Jan in 2012, Mike continues to create the delightful Berenstain Bear adventures from his studio in Pennsylvania.

The book is a well-executed and charming guide for young children experiencing a move, capturing the essence of change with empathy and understanding. A notable aspect of the story is when Brother Bear expresses his worries about leaving friends behind. Mama and Papa Bear respond with empathy, sharing that they too are leaving friends behind and emphasizing the ways they can stay connected through writing or visiting.
The narrative skillfully addresses the anxieties associated with moving while highlighting the silver linings of change. The parents' discussion about making new friends sets the stage for a wonderful follow-through as Brother Bear discovers plenty of new cubs to befriend upon arriving at the tree house. This thoughtful portrayal of change and resilience is one of the book's many strengths.
"The Berenstain Bears' Moving Day" is a comforting and beautifully crafted story that showcases the beloved Berenstain Bear characters navigating a significant life event with grace and optimism. The familiar characters and relatable storyline make it an invaluable resource for families undergoing similar transitions. Highly recommended for its empathy, charm, and positive message about embracing change and finding new friendships. It's a wonderful resource for parents, educators, and young readers alike, providing a reassuring message that change, though challenging, can bring unexpected joys and new friendships.
This particular book is wordy in some areas, especially in the beginning (this kind of stuff drives me nuts). I also feel it’s a bit repetitive in areas not necessary or really relatable for children. What I like is, that it addresses some important things. And the book has sparked questions & conversations with our kids.
Two things stood out to me. First, they talk about packing everything & not leaving their things behind (my kids have really worried about leaving their things behind). Of all the other moving books we read this directly talks about packing ALL their things, including brother bears toys & books.
Second, brother bear asks about leaving friends behind. The parents then express how they are leaving their friends behind too but how they can stay in touch with them by writing or visiting. The parents also talk about making new friends & when they get to the new house brother bear find plenty of other cubs to become friends with.
I also want to mention that they move into a fixer-upper. They don’t go into detail with the fixing of but at the end it’s all beautifully fixed up.
Other moving books to check out (all on Amazon):
Boomer’s Big Day by Constance W. McGeorge (our family favorite)
Big Ernie’s New Home by Teresa & Whitney Martin
