A poetic yet scientifically accurate description of the life cycle of a salmon. This book will inspire children in classrooms and at home to appreciate the world around us!

Fast-paced prose and brilliant illustrations follow the salmon from their form as eggs in a stream to the wide ocean, eventually making a hazardous journey home to their stream of origin. Carol Reed-Jones uses cumulative verse, a literary technique that is not only enjoyable but suggests how interconnected salmon are with their habitat. At the back is a section on salmon facts and what makes a good habitat for them, teaching the basics of ecology and why clean streams and waters are so important.

A perfect book for:

parents and teachers needing homeschool supplies for kindergarten (or any grade!)anyone looking for forest and other habitat books for kidsanyone looking for children's books to help instill an appreciation of our planet!

Review

". . . captures the magnificence of the Pacific Salmon's life history. It should inspire the child in all of us. -- Dr. David Suzuki, of The David Suzuki Foundation, a Canadian science-based environmental organization

"Salmon Stream is truly a pleasure to read . . . rich in imagery, yet well founded in the scientific cycle of salmon. . ." --
Michael Frome, Ph.D. - educator, author and environmental advocate

About the Author

Carol Reed-Jones lives in the Pacific Northwest with her husband, son, dog, and cat. She enjoys hiking, camping, backpacking, and watching Douglas squirrels from her living room window. She strongly believes in living in ways that preserve the earth and all life. In addition to her writing, Carol teaches music, directs an early music vocal group, and is completing her Master's thesis in music history. Carol has written two books for Dawn Publications, the Ben Franklin Award-winning The Tree in the Ancient Forest and the beautiful new Salmon Stream, which follows the life cycle of salmon in cumulative verse.
Michael Maydak is a professional artist who is passionate about nature - especially the riparian environments that he loves so much as a fly fisherman. He and his son, Wolf, often go fishing together. Mike is an art graduate of San Jose University and has been a professional artist since 1976, with his studio at his home in Cool, California. This is the fifth book he has illustrated for Dawn Publications.

Love the book, disappointed that this is the second book I have received from Amazon bent badly enough to damage the cover the past week.

This book presents the facts of the life of salmon in a book of such lovely artwork. The written prose is simple to read or to hear read, and is presented in a manner that is almost poetry. But the quality of the art work is most impressive. This is the way children's literature should be presented--in a way that appeals to all senses and touches the heart.

This story of the salmon life cycle is written in cumulative verse, like "The House That Jack Built." Starting from "This is the stream in the forest," the verses accumulate information as the eggs hatch into alevin and fry, while maintaining the lyrical flow of that stream. Then the smolt travel downstream to "an estuary wide" and the turbulent ocean. When the salmon receive the instinctual message to return home to spawn, the poetry of their journey is reversed: "... up the river with the tide, past the estuary wide ... obeying the voice of instinct's call, they leap a ten foot waterfall, to reach the place where they were born, bruised from the journey, weary and worn."
Again they arrive in the peaceful shady pool "filled with water, clear and cool, that flows in the stream in the forest." What a perfect way to demonstrate this cycle of life!
Illustrations saturate the pages with color. You'll feel wet from the flow of the cool stream, the splash of the waterfalls! Endpapers and an appendix add even more scientific information, as well as contacts and ideas for citizen conservation efforts.

we're a homeschooling family and right now we're learning all about the Puget Sound. This book is great - nicely done, nice illustrations and give a great sense of our ecosystem and watershed. Can't wait to head up to Cedar River to make this all come together for my kids.

Beautiful book. I read this aloud to my fourth grade students during our study of the salmon life cycle, and they loved seeing the beautiful pictures and hearing the rhythmic way the book is written.
