The picture showed that you could fit a half an onion in this little chopper but that is not accurate. I have to pre-cut my onions and other food items into smaller pieces in order to use this tool. Celery was a big pain because the celery strings would get stuck in the squares. Still I found chopping onions to be better with this gadget so long as you cut them smaller instead of with a knife. It is somewhat easy to clean and it comes with a little brush to help with that. Chopping can be tough though and you make a lot of noise doing so.
