About the Author

Madeleine Gray is a writer and critic from Sydney. She has written arts criticism for SRB, Overland, Meanjin, The Lifted Brow, The Saturday Paper, The Monthly, etc. In 2019 she was a CA-SRB Emerging Critic, and in 2021 she was a finalist for the Walkley Pascall Prize for Arts Criticism, a finalist for the Woollahra Digital Literary Non-fiction award, and a recipient of a Neilma Sidney Literary Travel grant. She has an MSt in English from the University of Oxford and is a current doctoral candidate at the University of Manchester, researching contemporary women's autobiographical literary theory. Green Dot is her first novel.

Madeleine Gray is a writer and critic from Sydney. She has an MSt in English Literature from the University of Oxford, where she wrote on anti-neoliberal feminist temporalities in contemporary women’s fiction, and she is a current doctoral candidate in English Literature at the University of Manchester, writing on contemporary women’s autobiographical literary theory. Clearly, she likes women. She has written literary criticism for such publications as the TLS, the BBC, the Guardian, Electric Literature, Overland, Meanjin, and the Sydney Review of Books.

Despite the reveal of understanding the title being extremely disappointing and millennial, this book was a good read. I will say, it took a while to finish as I was only half attached to the characters and plot, but I am overall not disappointed and quite satisfied.

This book surprised me. Infidelity is usually a turn-off trigger that immediately makes me close a book. But for some reason, Hera managed to capture my attention throughout and I finished the book in a day.

After the messy-girl fiction trend earlier this year, I saw a bunch of sad-girl books that I didn’t think would work but did! This book was no exception (and probably one of the better ones). Witty, sassy and full of contemplations and inner monologues, I devoured it.

The major highlight for me was the writing itself. The word choices and prose knitting were masterful. Here’s an example: “But what is lust if not generosity persevering? I wanted him to be what I needed, and so that is what he became.”

I loved the writing and will definitely read more books from the author!

Wow. Wow. Wow. This book is incredible. Hilarious, heartbreaking and SO relatable. The author articulates thoughts and feelings I thought only I had ever experienced and I just wish this book had been written over ten years ago when I went through a similarly devastating affair. Hera, although we should hate her behaviour, is so hard to dislike and so much of her experience resonated with me. I only realised this is the author’s first novel after I’d finished reading it, which is unbelievable since the style of writing and standard is up there with some of the most accomplished authors I’ve read. Definitely the best book I’ve read in a long while. I positively drank it in, crying and laughing throughout!

This has to lose a star because the main character is so weak and has no self-respect. I'm not completely judgemental about adultery but the way to get someone to leave their spouse isn't by being a complete sap. It's not an attractive quality. The idea of giving him a taste of his own medicine doesn't seem to occur to her. Instead she just makes herself continuously available. When she's seeing friends she spends all her time desperate for a message from him and when he does briefly become available she dumps them. Finally, even when the family dog has died she doesn't go to console her single dad, she hangs on for a slim possiblity of seeing the man. She's too pathetic and too annoying.
On the other hand, mainly it's easy to read and well-written, but hard to fully recommend.

I so wanted to love this book with its great reviews, and having been in a similar situation but with the countries reversed. Sadly, I found it heavy going in parts and clearly aimed at an Australian audience. Even though I lived in Oz many years ago, I failed to understand half of what the author was talking about (until Hera moved to London!). I ploughed on through the book to see what the eventual outcome was. Sorry.
