Product Description

110 Empty Hotel Rooms—Filled with Horror!

Jack Torrance (Steven Weber) and his family (Rebecca De Mornay and Courtland Mead) move into the sprawling, vacant Overlook Hotel to get away from it all. Away from the alcoholism that derails Jack's writing career. Away from the violent outbursts that mar Jack's past. But Jack's young son Danny knows better. He possesses a psychic gift called the shining—a gift the hotel's vile spirits desperately want.

In the hands of Stephen King, the "dead" Overlook comes horrifyingly alive. Phantoms lurk, the message "redrum" appears with scary frequency, and even the garden topiary lurches into macabre existence in this atmospheric shocker scripted by King from his own novel and directed by ace King adaptor Mick Garris (Sleepwalkers, The Stand).

I love this version of The Shining and am so happy it finally came out on Blu-ray.

I love both the 1980 motion picture and the 1997 mini-series. What makes the mini-series worth watching is it’s more accurate to the book. Looking forward to seeing the BD version.

Admittedly, the Stanley Kubrick version has superior acting and visual effects. But this made-for-TV version still earns 4 stars, primarily because the story more closely follows the Stephen King book, which is not surprising because King wrote the teleplay for this version, and he was reportedly critical of Kubrick's adaptation. I'm pleased that this version has finally been released on blu-ray

King was very mad that Kubrick wisely made the abusive, alcoholic dad a villain rather than giving him a redemption story. This version is painfully long and toothless.

Finally this mini-series is on blu-ray. Excellent playback, except really disappointed it’s not in widescreen but standard edition. Don’t understand this considering the dvd version is widescreen and when it was first broadcast. But still a nice blu-ray. But will keep the dvd.

This is a review of the product itself, not a rating of the series or its content. This is basically a cheap and fast transfer to blu ray. Quality is a tiny step up from DVD. Not worth $30.

4.0 out of 5 stars Un buon adattamento
Reviewed in Italy on February 29, 2020

5.0 out of 5 stars A great transfer, region A locked
Reviewed in Australia on March 30, 2024
For those who already like the show: The video transfer is exceptional compared to the low quality DVD. The disc is unfortunately region A locked.

For new viewers, this is not a modern horror movie/tv show. If you want scares then go find Netflix’s House on Haunted Hill etc. The Shining is more of a supernatural thriller that slowly burns away with a great third act that grips you because you’re really intro the characters. Great story and great acting.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just you have to see this movie

Film The Shining is a classic horror movie based on the novel by Stephen King and directed by Stanley Kubrick. This edition is digitally remastered and recorded on the disc DVD dual layer which results in a very good video quality during playback. When playing in the player blu-rey, which increases the resolution for playback DVD discs, the quality is almost similar to the quality of the film version of blu-rey. I recommend to all fans of Stephen King. I also adds a few illustrative images with information from dvd and subtitles included in this edition.Greetings.

5.0 out of 5 stars This version is very hard to find!!!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 1, 2019
I am so glad I've found this on here. I actually prefer this series mini movie to the original movie, and I've actually got it!

This is a German DVD, however it has English audio. I find that this 2 part series actually goes by the book more as well, and with it being a 2 parter makes it even more compelling.
