War is coming to the Wild Lands...

One month after the defeat of a rogue group of terrorists, the United States struggles to maintain control over the New Frontier. The untamed sector of America simmers as opportunists, criminals, and marauders wait to fill the void left behind. An extremist faction of the Navajo Nation called the Rattlesnakes have waited years for this moment. Their leader launches their first, brutal attack on a water treatment and power facility in Colorado.

The message is clear to Colorado Sheriff Lindsey Plymouth and her foreign allies working to keep peace: a new enemy has risen up. Lindsey enlists Raven Spears to track the Rattlesnakes and bring their leader to justice before they can strike again. As the trail gets hot, Raven realizes this is just one of many assaults the Rattlesnakes have planned to conquer the New Frontier.

With violence spilling over the borders, America’s foreign allies begin to question the cost to their own forces and start to withdraw. Lindsey and the Colorado Rangers scramble to find new allies, but it will take more than a few friends to hold back the growing Rattlesnake army. If they fail to defeat this new evil, it will devour the New Frontier.

In view of the early 2023 Chinese “spy” balloon incident and the 2020-2022 COVID pandemic, “The New Frontier” is a must-read series.
Nicholas Smith, bestselling author of the “Trackers” series, and his co-author, Anthony Melchiorri, have hit another home run with “Wild Lands” the second in “The New Frontier” trilogy.
“The New Frontier” is a refreshingly new and realistic series in the post-apocalyptic genre in that it does not rely on zombies or mutant monsters to drive the story line and in doing so, it exposes the vulnerabilities of modern America to an EMP attack. Given recent events, the scenario is plausible and should give our elected officials cause for concern. “The New Frontier” also exposes the ever-present, dark, underbelly of violence in America.
Much of the action takes place in Colorado two years after a North Korean EMP attack that paralyzed the continental United States followed by a nuclear attack on Washington, D.C. “Wild Lands” includes the chaotic and savage scenes of the struggle for survival in small towns and large cities as the national government seeks to regain control and reestablish stability. The federal government is stretched so thin that it can send only a platoon of infantry to assist Sheriff Lindsey Plymouth and her Colorado Rangers in their efforts to combat renegade Navajo Eddy Nez and his mixed band of terrorists.
The characters are complex and fully developed with personal strengths and weaknesses, warts and all, of the sort you expect to find in people at all levels. The theme of “leave no man behind” is always prevalent, sometimes to the detriment of the greater good. Raven and his faithful dog, Creek, again play prominent roles.
The action is fast paced but totally believable with several unexpected plot twists. The authors employ great foreshadowing on several occasions. The authors show intimate knowledge as to what essential services are required in times of crisis, and the main characters demonstrate that public safety and protection of citizens are the prime missions of government no matter what the circumstances. Not only must the local law enforcement officers deal with “normal” law and order duties, they also must cope with ruthless militias and saboteurs and the inexorable spread of the deadly plague called Wild Fire.
The authors absolutely nail the intensity of combat. As a Vietnam veteran, reading “Wild Lands” caused a flashback to a terrible dark night in Vietnam when I was the only America for miles around with about 50 Montagnards fighting off an enemy bent on our destruction.
“The New Frontier” is a stand-alone series, but I found it helpful to scan the first book in the “Trackers” series which I read five years ago. I look forward to reading “Wild Warriors” the third and final book in the series.
The threats we face today from North Korea, China, Iran, and Russia are real. “The New Frontier” series should inform and prepare us for the unthinkable. This series is destined to become the jewel in the crown of post-apocalyptic mystery-thrillers.

I am enjoying this series very much. I have already read the tracker series, and looking forward to the next one in this series.

Wow! There was so much happening at breakneck speed that it definitely had my heart racing! Raven and Creek just can't seem to catch a break for just a little rest...

Goodness! What can I say? I HATE to say anything that could spoil your enjoyment of this story - unlike others who seem to take pride in retelling the story in the review. The best way to enjoy this story is to simply read it for yourself without too many details floating around.

What do you need to know? Well, this is a richly created world where you can see it in your mind's eye, thanks to the authors' descriptions. The characters are believable and very human... they get hurt and bleed! There are the good guys, the bad guys, and the not so clear cut either way - just like in real life. Here, we can see both the best and the worst of humanity in the face of crisis. Raven and Creek are an incredible duo, and I just love their dynamic. While the tone is mainly serious, there was a moment of dark humor where there is a scene reminiscent of Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield - with some poetic license, of course! (Gotta love it!) Sorry, but it made me smile and chuckle a wee bit!

Nicholas Sansbury Smith and Anthony J Melchiorri have definitely outdone themselves with this one! It definitely is hotter than the first book! I can't wait for book 3! Grab this and read it! You won't regret it!

With power off coast to coast and Washington DC a huge crater, America's neighbors, Canada and Mexico, and England stepped up helping with food, supplies and manpower to rebuild. But the New Frontier, stretching from Colorado to California, was basically a lawless land teeming with hunger and illness. A pandemic plague called Wild Fire was spreading like its name, an illness ending in death. A cure had been found, but it was a difficult and time consuming process to manufacture in the quantity needed.
The Rattlesnakes, a group led by ex-Navaho policeman Eddy 'Ahiga' Nez spread rumors that Commander, the cure for Wild Fire, was poisonous, meant to get rid of the population of New Frontier. Eddy spread his terror, seeking to make the New Frontier a home for Native Americans without a government telling them what to do. Sam 'Raven' Spears and his canine sidekick Creek worked to keep Estes Park safe. With help from Sheriff Lindsey Plymouth and Raven's friend Jay Wauneka, A Navajo policeman who had worked with Eddy Nez, Raven and Creek wanted to help the people of the New Frontier. Between Raven and Secretary of Defense Charlize Montgomery, they are determined to free the New Frontier from the Rattlesnake's influence, and see an end to Eddy Nez!
Amazing characters, a storyline filled with perfidy, betrayal and suspicion, and outstanding storytellers made this terrifically hard to put down! A couple sleepless nights and I finished a really great read! Now I can't wait for book 3!

Although the story revolves around the First Peoples renegade Eddy, I am not so sure that this part of the story is a good representation of the Native First People. The First Native people most definitely have the right to their anger, because of the treatment they have received, as immigrants came to the New World and took the land belonging to their people. But I do not believe that their culture would accept whole sale slaughter of so many innocent people. I do believe that their are many, many people who have evil in their minds and would most definitely try to take what they want from anyone standing in their way. I also believe that people who have stood with their hands out most of their lives, will also try to take what they think they deserve and will kill anyone who try’s to stop them. America is in peril from the inside out.

Not my usual genre, but a very good second book in thus trilogy. Raven and his dog Creek go after the bad guys again but with lots of bloodshed and no real win thus time, setting up the 3rd book nicely..
