Five Belles Too Many (A Sarah Blair Mystery) Paperback – June 28, 2022
Purchase options and add-ons
Sometimes Sarah’s mother, Maybelle, can be higher maintenance than her Siamese cat RahRah. Maybelle and her friend, Mr. George Rogers, have been chosen to be one of five couples competing for a small-town “perfect” wedding and dream honeymoon on a Southern Belles reality show—and guess who has to be chaperone. Even more vexing, the producers have decided to put up the crew and participants at the restaurant/bed and breakfast owned by Sarah’s nemesis Jane Clark.
But when someone turns up dead with Jane kneeling by the body with blood on her hands, she goes from being Sarah’s chief rival to the police’s chief suspect. Neither Sarah nor her twin, Chef Emily Johnson, can stand Jane—still, they don’t think she’s a murderer. The producers vow the show must go on, but to protect their mother and the other contestants, Sarah vows to find the true killer before someone else gets eliminated...

Sarah didn’t realize all the demands on her time when hooked into being Maybelle’s chaperone during the competition. For one thing, she has two pets, RahRah & Fluffy that depend on her, and a job that she just can’t show up for on the whims of the producers. And secondly, they would have to pick her nemesis, Jane Clark, be to largely involved in the same show events meaning that now she’s going to have to deal with her on a daily basis.
As much as she can’t stand Jane, when she’s found standing over the dead body of the show’s director, she can’t see the justice in her being wrongly accused. She had been determined to stay out of it and let the police handle it, but knowing the Chief of Police has been known to jump to quickly to the wrong conclusions, Sarah ends up calling her lawyer boss, Harlan, to help Jane. When the method of death is leaning towards poisoning and has the authorities looking at Southwinds, the restaurant owned by Sarah and her twin sister, as a possible place it was administered, it has Jane jumping in with both feet to find answer to make sure finger pointing doesn’t turn to out and out accusations or being charged wrongly harming the business Emily and Marcus had worked so hard to build up.
While everyone may be competing to win, for some it wasn’t so much for the wedding as the media coverage, monetary value or even as a lark, but none of them expected to be involved in intrigue, danger and murder. It starts to be not who is getting kicked off the show, but who is going to be the next victim. When the first couple forced to leave wasn’t the one predicted to be, there seems to be signs of some unscrupulous dealings concerning how things are done when the votes weren’t even counted. The odds are there may be more staging than voting going on? Could the cost to some gamblers be more than money lost if the wrong couple is sent home?
On a side note, Sarah and Cliff, finally get to make amends and start working back to being friends again. Is it possible that they could be some rekindling of feelings sometime in the future?
FIVE BELLES TOO MANY has a lot of excitement, anxiety, mystery and intrigue to keep this reader quickly turning pages as I tried, alongside Sarah, to figure out whodunit and who might last long enough to win the wedding and honeymoon of a life time.
It’s always a thrill to take a trip back to Wheaton, Alabama and visit with Sarah and friends. FIVE BELLES TOO MANY was no exception. Debra H. Goldstein manages to entertain and stimulate us and then leave us exhilarated by the ending. Most definitely FIVE STAR reading! Although part of a series, it can most definitely be read as a standalone book.
I receive a copy of this book with no requirement or expectations of a review. All opinions are completely my own.
Not happy about the situation, she can see no way out of it so goes along with it. But one night after returning from dinner at Southwind, she hears a scream and comes across Jane standing over a dead body with blood on her hands. Now Jane is the main suspect in a murder, and even though Sarah (and myself) can't stand the woman (mine because I hate the 'evil nemesis' in books), she knows that she can't let her go down for a murder she's sure she didn't do and intends to find the guilty party herself.
But it isn't going to be easy, because any one of the cast or crew could be the killer that Sarah is looking for. When another death occurs, things become not only more heated for Jane, but for everyone working on the show. No one wants to continue, but with the contracts signed, they have no choice. If Sarah can't put the clues together fast, someone is going to get away with murder...
This is the sixth book in the series, and I have read them all. I have come to enjoy watching Sarah as she tries to figure out who might be a murderer, and this time out, there are so many red herrings it could fill a water pond. Even Maybelle, who usually loves to be the center of attention, is beginning to waver, and worry about Sarah. Sarah has even enlisted the help of Harlan, the attorney she works for, and is feeding him information as she garners it. But there is so much going on -- with the competitions that the show has set, the added dinners at Southwind, and even Sarah's personal life, that she's overwhelmed with it all.
But as it comes to a head and Sarah overhears a crucial conversation, things start to come together. But when they do, she realizes that she might be in over her head and looks for a way out...luckily, it all works out just as it's supposed to, with a surprise ending that's pleasing and satisfactory both; and worth reading the book. I enjoyed this quite a bit and look forward to the next in the series. Highly recommended.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher and Amazon but this in no way influenced my review.
