The Sweet Smell of Magnolias and Memories Kindle Edition

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 379 ratings

A Southern novel full of friendships and finding love.

“There’s no time,” Colin said. “You have to go. Find me, call me . . .”

Jacey and Colin shared the three most intense days of their lives together, waiting for help as Mississippi floodwaters surrounded them. Jacey knew Colin was the love of her life—until her rescue boat went under water, along with Colin’s last name and pieces of Jacey’s memory.

The last thing she remembered was being submerged in water. Again.

As Jacey walks down the aisle as the maid of honor in her friend’s wedding a year later, the last person she expects to see is Colin. The biggest surprise, though, is that the man of her dreams is not wearing jeans and flip-flops as he did when he held her through those long nights of the flood. He’s the preacher.

As Jacey’s memories come flooding back, it’s almost more than she can take. The fate of the young family trapped with them haunts her. The unwavering honesty—and support—of her best friend Georgia forces her to take a fresh look at herself.

She’s spent her life afraid of love. But a flood is opening Jacey’s heart in the most unexpected ways.

Editorial Reviews

Review

'McHale’s (The Secret to Hummingbird Cake) conversational tone, flawed characters, and feel-good ending make for an uplifting read that incorporates themes.' -- Library Journal

“This interesting take on a different type of post-traumatic stress and how it may be overcome with faith, love, and friendship would be a good read for fans of Beth K. Vogt.” -- CBA Market

'The writing is so beautifully done, the prose so delicately chosen, that the book is a treat to savor.' -- RT Book Reviews, 4 stars

'McHale has a way of creating characters who are believably flawed and human. Her wit and hilarity are perfect matches for the heartfelt romance in this winsome book.' -- Publishers Weekly

This is a very good story with fun and loving characters. It truly does have just the right amount of laughter, pain, kindness and forgiveness.
First book I've read by this author but I am excited to read more by her. She did a great job a writing something unique and heart felt.

I loved the Secret to Hummingbird Cake, the author's first book, and was eagerly awaiting her second novel. It didn't disappoint. While it took me a little bit to get into the story, once I did, I thoroughly enjoyed it. The characters were well written, and while their relational communication issues bothered me (just talk to each other already!) as well as some of their treatment of faith, overall, a delightful read that definitely had me chuckling in a few places, and eagerly awaiting the next novel.

Please note, this novel isn't connected to the previous one. It is a stand alone.

As one who reads voraciously from many varied genres, I have to admit this may well be the best book I have read in a good while. It's a well written and believable story with genuine characters; I love that not everyone is perfect and that not everyone is tall, slim and red-headed. I need more of this kind of writing! I have laughed, cried, been frustrated with and rooted for these characters; I didn't feel like I had already read this book when I read it. I think it's so important that women support each other, (as these ladies do) that we follow our hearts, that we dream and believe. Their is power in forgiveness, honesty and communication. I've been blessed by reading this book and look forward to reading other Celeste Fletcher McHale books. I'd enjoy a sequel to this one; any chance?

I simply adored this absolutely heart-warming story. Well written with great characters, it kept me fully engaged and laughing out loud. Georgia should have her own series! If you need some laughs or just the satisfaction of a well-spun yarn, you can't go wrong with The Sweet Smell of Magnolias. I'm looking forward to reading more from this author.

Magnolias are probably the most beautiful flowers ever. I absolutely love a flowering magnolia tree. Reading about how Jacey floats into Colin's on the limb of a flowering magnolia branch is sweet as can be. It's no wonder love floated in with that magnolia branch.

I grew up in the same areas as the author of these books. Small town living is an experience that you have to live through in order to understand. Her writing style is delightful and the story was well set out and easy to read.

I LOVED her first book (The Secret To Hummingbird Cake). It is the best book in this genre that I've ever read. So I definitely wanted to read the second one. I don't know if my expectations were too high because of how much I loved the first one but this one was disappointing to me. It was a good story and was worth reading but if I had read it first I never have wanted to read the first one.

I really enjoyed this book. It was well written and I loved the characters. The friendship between Jacey and her best friend, Georgia brought a lot of chuckles. There were bad times and good times and lots of love.
