Product Description
Universal Pictures proudly presents the first romantic comedy from a major studio about two gay men maybe, possibly, probably, stumbling towards love. Maybe. They're both very busy. "Bros" does not say that gay people are tragic, or transcendent, or fabulous, or even nice all the time. Gay people are just people, trying to work through and with all their flaws and insecurities in a very messy, imperfect world. It is more than a bit sad that it took until 2022 for cinema to get this far. But, here we are-- AT LONG LAST!!
But to label "Bros" a "rom-com" is a dis-service to writers Nicholas Stoller and Billy Eichner. Yes, "Bros" acknowledges and pays tribute to the tropes and conventions in more "traditional rom-coms", but it cuts much deeper than that. It has often been said that comedy is merely "tragedy plus time" and "Bros." proves it. It definitely helps that Billy Eichner comes across as a jaded Average Gay Joe. He is extremely relatable. And "Bros" is not a "coming of age" gay story. It is a gay story told by gay actors who have already been there and done that. The main character of Bob is just over 40. He has resigned himself to his snarky podcast, trying to open up an LGBTQ+ History Museum with colleagues who have too many personal agendas, and a life of hook-ups without substance.
Billy Eichner goes far beyond his "Billy On The Street" persona and delivers an often heart-breaking performance that deftly mixes comedy with pain. He is still full of razor-sharp wit, delicious one-liners and wisecracks, but here you see the pain and insecurity behind the surface bravado. One suspects that Eichner, like his character of Bob, is sick and tired of being marginalized by mainstream heterosexual society-- tired of being told to tone himself down and be less than he is in order to make others comfortable. Bob is in the uncomfortable position of being 'too gay and outspoken" for his potential boyfriend Aaron (Luke MacFarlane) and "not gay enough" for his co-workers.
The attraction between Bob and Aaron is as unlikely as it is unexpected. They don't exactly "meet cute" in typical "rom-com" fashion. Luke MacFarlane is dreamy, but Aaron works hard to dispel some preconceptions and misconceptions about himself. There is a heart, soul, feelings, and some unrealized dreams behind Aaron's "gym body." And breaking down Bob's insecurities is no easy task. Going from hook-up to relationship to break-up and a tenuous make-up, Bob and Aaron inspire, challenge, hurt, and heal each other. The course of love never runs smooth but, for all its honest and honestly jaded observations, "Bros" has enough pure heart to say that the journey is worth it.
"Bros" features cameos by Kirsten Chenoweth, Debra Messing, Harvey Fierstein, Bowen Yang and others.
