Product description

Affirmation - Savage Garden (CD 1999)

Amazon.com

Savage Garden's songs are of innocence and urgency. On the Australian pop duo's second album, Affirmation, love is either a broken thing or a newly exploding one, passion and obsession taking over after a spin on the dance floor. At the same time, when Darren Hayes and Daniel Jones proclaim that they want to "live like animals," they're not planning anything too raw, too Reznorish: they just want that childlike lack of guile. This approach, taken with a total lack of irony and with large doses of appealing melodicism, led to multiplatinum sales for the act's debut, and there's no reason to think that Affirmation won't be similarly accepted. Sometimes a bit too goodhearted for its own good--the title track's wide-eyed sentiments might make even Stuart Smalley smirk--the disc's best moments are hard to dislike when taken on their own terms. --Rickey Wright

Savage Garden's disk Affirmation takes us on yet another saucy, impetious and yet meaningful ride into the world of pop-rock music. The group has grown more mature with this latest album which includes many more lively songs than its predecessor. Of course everyone has heard the infamous "Crash and Burn" that has topped the charts for weeks now, but fans will be surprised at the rest of the worthy songs on the disk.
The title track features good lyrics and a catchy tune but only stumbles on a few minor points that are personal blips. The rest of the songs deal with love, infatuation, warnings, and last chances, but the CD's most unexpected track is "Two Beds and a Coffee Machine," which takes on domestic abuse, and views from the side of a battered wife.
My personal favorites are "I Knew I Loved You" (another hit radio song), "Crash and Burn," and "Gunning Down Romance," for its lethargic lyrics, but I play the disk from beginning to end. There's no skip here, unlike a lot of other groups that I enjoy. For new fans and old, Affirmation aims to please.

Okay, so maybe I didn't. I only knew two of the tracks-the so-so "I Knew I Loved You" (another simple, beautiful, and overplayed ballad like "Truly, Madly, Deeply), and the so-so but underplayed "The Animal Song." I figured on the strength of those two songs that the album would be worth buying, mainly because I liked their debut so much. This album wasn't just good, it blew me away. "Affirmation" has to be one of the greatest songs I have heard this year, even if I do not agree with all of the statements made in it, and "Crash and Burn" is an awesome single. "Hold Me" and "Two Beds And A Coffee Machine" are my other two favorites from this album. It keeps getting played on my cd player over and over again, and promises to be just as successful as their last album was. If you're not sure about buying this album, trust me, there's not a bad track in the lot. The rest of the album is even better than the first single from it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quanto di meglio ci possa essere a livello pop
Reviewed in Italy on November 18, 2019
Straconsigliato.
