Motherboard BIOS update for AMD Ryzen 5000 series processors

  1. From GIGABYTE’s website, download the latest compressed BIOS update file that matches your motherboard model from its product page.
  2. Uncompress the downloaded BIOS file, save it to your USB flash drive, and rename it to GIGABYTE.bin. Note: The USB flash drive must use the FAT32/16 file system.
  3. Insert the USB flash drive into the white USB port or BIOS Q Flash port on the back panel of your motherboard (USB port may not be labelled on all models, checking the user manual is recommended)
  4. Connect the power cables to the CPU 8 Pin power connector (connect either one if there are two) and mainboard 24 Pin power connector.
  5. Press the Q-Flash Plus button (location may vary by model) and the system will automatically search and match the BIOS file in the USB flash drive on the white USB port. The QFLED and the Q-Flash Plus button on the rear panel will flash during the BIOS matching and flashing process. Wait for 2-3 minutes and the QFLED will stop flashing when the BIOS flashing is complete.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great aesthetic for anti-RGB builds, pricey unless you actually need Thunderbolt

There are plenty of other B550 or even X570 motherboards out there which are either cheaper than this, have more features, or even both.

The reason I chose this particular motherboard is because of it's built in Thunderbolt ports. I have a Caldigit TS3 Plus thunderbolt hub which I use as a one cable solution for my Macbook Pro to connect my mouse, keyboard, headset, LAN, and monitors, as well as to charge the MBP. I wanted my desktop to also have Thunderbolt to quickly swap this hub between the MBP and my desktop and avoid the hassle of reconnecting all of those said peripherals every day.

At this time, there aren't many other AMD mobos out there that support Thunderbolt (i.e. the ASRock X570), and Thunderbolt add-in cards can be pretty pricey (and unreliable). If you're looking for Ryzen 5xxx compatibility, PCIe4 (on the CPU), and Thunderbolt, then this mobo might be one of the few that'll meet your requirements. I was able to justify the price once I considered that I'd need to buy a separate Thunderbolt card if I picked any other motherboard. I chose this over the ASRock because of a mixture of aesthetic, form factor (was not going for the micro itx form factor, needed more PCIe slots), and reliability (reviews on the ASRock seem a bit shaky).

Pros:
Aesthetic is perfect for no/low RGB and LED builds
Thunderbolt built in
Good VRMs, stable overclocking results (haven't really bothered pushing the thing until Ryzen 5xxx drops though)

Cons:
As the other reviewer mentioned, no USB Type-C header. I have a disconnected USB Type-C port on my case that is very sad. Existing solutions are not great (very few reliable PCIe cards that can provide this header, or try to convert existing USB 3.0 headers, which this board only has one of)

Notes:
Price is justified (to me) if you need the Thunderbolt functionality. If you don't, there are probably other mobos out there that will be a better price or have other features that would make them a better choice than this one.

I bought a B550 VISION D because
* I wanted an B550 motherboard for PCIe 4.0 without special cooling requirements
* It had 1 GBps network ports rather than 2.5 Gbps ports which were not supported by Linux

The first VISION D had unreliable network ports and was returned within a few days

The second VISION D's network ports stopped working after six months. The returns procedure was a lot smoother than most Internet reports of Gigabyte returns

Needing the computer before getting the replacement motherboard, I ordered another

The third VISION D had two motherboard defects. One of the fan sensors flipped between showing voltage and RPM. It lost all its CMOS settings. It also behaved in erratic ways which may not have been caused by the motherboard including freezing and filling the file system

All three B550 VISION D boards were bowed enough to need flexing before the fixing screws could be started

By this time I had too much bad experience with VISION Ds and looked for an alternative. The ASUS ProArt B550 had become available as had Linux support for 2.5 Gbps ports. A ProArt B550 was bought. On fitting it was found to be flat, not bowed. After running for a week plus, the sensor values are stable and there has been no erratic behaviour

As other reviewers have commented, the VISION D is expensive if you don't use the Thunderbolt feature. I didn't so two stars for value for money

4.0 out of 5 stars
