Reformation 21's End of Year Review of Books
Preaching's Survey of Bibles and Bible Reference
"Who shall ascend the mountain of the LORD?" ―Psalm 24:3
In many ways, this is the fundamental question of Old Testament Israel's cult―and, indeed, of life itself. How can creatures made from dust become members of God's household "forever"? The question of ascending God's mountain to his house was likely recited by pilgrims on approaching the temple on Mount Zion during the annual festivals. This entrance liturgy runs as an undercurrent throughout the Pentateuch and is at the heart of its central book, Leviticus. Its dominating concern, as well as that of the rest of the Bible, is the way in which humanity may come to dwell with God. Israel's deepest hope was not merely a liturgical question, but a historical quest.
Under the Mosaic covenant, the way opened up by God was through the Levitical cult of the tabernacle and later temple, its priesthood and rituals. The advent of Christ would open up a new and living way into the house of God―indeed, that was the goal of his taking our humanity upon himself, his suffering, his resurrection and ascension.
In this stimulating volume in the New Studies in Biblical Theology, Michael Morales explores the narrative context, literary structure and theology of Leviticus. He follows its dramatic movement, examines the tabernacle cult and the Day of Atonement, and tracks the development from Sinai?s tabernacle to Zion's temple―and from the earthly to the heavenly Mount Zion in the New Testament. He shows how life with God in the house of God was the original goal of the creation of the cosmos, and became the goal of redemption and the new creation.
Addressing key issues in biblical theology, the works comprising New Studies in Biblical Theology are creative attempts to help Christians better understand their Bibles. The NSBT series is edited by D. A. Carson, aiming to simultaneously instruct and to edify, to interact with current scholarship and to point the way ahead.

"Some books give insight at multiple levels. This is one of them. Entirely in line with the goals of NSBT, Dr Laniak develops a biblical theology of 'shepherd' imagery throughout the Bible."

This book looks more scholarly just flipping through the pages, but it's easy to read and Morales defines all the Hebrew words he uses. My only recommendation is to have a note card to write a few of the definitions down so you can reference them later in the book.
Deepen your understanding of a book that is supposed to be "boring."
It led me to buy this book, and I cannot thank Morales enough for writing it. I am not a student of theology so I am incapable of giving you anything like a peer review or a comparative review on this work. I cannot praise or criticize his hermeneutic, and I wouldn't know if his exegesis (and there is some) is good, bad, or otherwise.
What I CAN tell you is that this book was exactly what I needed to order and make sense of the rich symbols, structure, and New Testament implications of Leviticus. I used this book in tandem with several (6) commentaries from different eras and schools of thought, and I found that all of my questions and all of my confusions got straightened out in the Morales work much more clearly than in any of the others. The book demonstrates the theological structure of the book in the opening chapters and then moves on to a really thorough examination of every figure and theme in Leviticus.
It is a dense, dry, philosophy text-like book. If you're not into that or do not study from such material well, then you might want to click on the look inside button and read through the sample pages before purchase. Otherwise...dive in. This book is incredible. I am ever grateful for the scholarship and thought that went into this book.
So..after going through some online courses in the ANE I began to cry foul, all I wanted to do was to gain some context to my bible reading, and these so called "biblical scholars" were telling me my bible the (masoretic text) was too corrupt to have faith in!
Then along came this work by a true biblical scholar, who has sifted through the bible with all accountability (many footnotes to other sources as well) to show certain themes run through out the bible from beginning to end mainly the mountain/tabernacle/temple theme and it's relation to atonement and restored creation, and I believe the fulfilment of this in our Messiah Yeshua. Needless to say this was a refreshing read, and led me to another book from GK beale, the temple and the churches mission excellent as well. God's word is truly inspired, not fragmented by JEPD sources!!

Morales places Leviticus in its narrative context of genesis, exodus, and the torah as a whole. This elucidates the text's function SO much. After this he offers detailed exegesis and structural analysis which breaks down the books overall messages and structure in a profound yet accessible way. He goes on to trace the major themes through the rest of scripture.
One of the best books I've read in my whole life! Top 4 for sure. Can't recommend enough!! Read this book! You won't be let down!!
