I guess it is a high-alloy aluminum, because using it on an asphalt surface it wears amazingly slowly like steel. Is QUITE thin though, so I would say not for commercial use except in very free-flowing light weight material like grains, or maybe scooping on a concrete slab. Asphalt wear on mine is enough after about 15 hours use that I am going to have to put a wear strip on the bottom to prevent wear-through.
Additional comments after about 1 year's use and a couple of more purchases for other locations: good for fluffy snow (but will gouge into wood decks or pavers and scratch drives). Excellent for grain, wood chips, compost, leaf piles. Works fine on sand and gravel (not stone) and dryish topsoil too - just take a half-shovel bite or you will pull your back muscles lifting because it holds about 4 times what a normal round-nose contractor's shovel does. The wear issue I noted above is not serious - wears at the tip of the flat portion fast initially when working on asphalt or concrete, but once it starts wearing the rounded sides and the formed ridges in the blade the wear slows down to not much faster than with a standard steel shovel. This is a REALLY hard alloy for aluminum - which makes the shovel itself only about 2/3-3/4 the weight of a standard square-nose or round-nose contractor shovel. This model is becoming more and more used around the place as time goes on, as long as the material is loose - DEFINITELY NOT for damp or gravelly soil, and way too light weight to try digging down into the ground or a pile with it. Scooping horizontally under the pile (preferably on a hard flat surface) and lifting or tilting up to load is the way to go - no pushing it down into the pile with your foot.
Listen, I know why you are here. You don’t get here, to this page, without being at a certain point in your life. Man, woman, and child alike; all come here for the same reason: you’re in need of a shovel. Not just any shovel. A scoop shovel. Whether you’re 5, 35, or 85, this is it. This is the shovel. Eureka. You’ve found it. Get the credit card out and click “Buy Now”. But I get it. You’re hesitant. This isn’t like any shovel you’ve owned before. This thing is top shelf. This shovel is an investment. You’ve been fooled before. Weary shoveler, say no more. I’ve got you.
Hey, this shovel does one thing. It scoops. Do you need to scoop things? Yes. Yes, you do. Otherwise, you wouldn’t be here. Is this shovel good at scooping? I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t.
If you’re like most people, you aren’t here because you need a shovel for scooping piles of dirt and mounds of gravel, like the pictures posted on this item. You’re not a professional. You just need a good shovel, and you need it for the same reason all of the rest of us need a good shovel. Snow.
It’s simple, you’ve been burnt. $12 plastic shovels from the supermarket have left you saying things that shouldn’t be said in front of anyone. Those cool push shovels promising quick and easy clearing of your driveway were great until the scoop got full, and after a few loads trying to tip the snow off to the side, your back was killing you. And let’s not even mention that time you bought that expensive, “ergonomic,” Z-shaped thing that beat your body down worse than a day full of moving boxes, couches, and pianos. Hey, that’s behind you now. Take that ergonomic shovel and put it in the trash where it belonged in the first place. It’s going to be okay, because you’re in the right place. You made it.
Okay, if I have your attention now, that’s good. Let’s talk about the thought process. This is, after all, a big decision. Some of you will have gotten here because it isn’t the first season you’ve been looking at buying another new shovel. At this point, you’re over it, and you’re just wondering: what do all those poor folks living in the Midwest use when they get a dusting? You know, the real “salt of the earth” type. The people who willing live in places where the most comparable climate exists in some strange town in north-central Russia. What are they using?
This is it. This is the one. The battle-tested, elegant in its simplicity, solution to all life’s problems: the old-time aluminum scoop.
Is this a wise investment? It has a 15-year warranty.
Is it high quality? It’s high-grade aluminum alloy.
Will it be too heavy? No, and your back will thank you.
Will it handle the powdery/wet/slushy/icy snow we have in my area? Yes.
Is it overkill for my area of the country, that only gets snow once or twice a year? No. The snow is your enemy, and you must punish it.
Is this money well-spent? This shovel is made in the USA. Would you rather give your neighbor here in the United States of America a $50 bill and pass this shovel on to your children as an heirloom, or light $13 on fire each year for yet another joke of a plastic shovel?
Won’t it be less efficient than a push shovel? Won’t I have to do more work? No. Remember, you’re here looking for that magical shovel which has a work output best measured in cubic feet of snow moved per second. That’s what you’re getting, if you buy this shovel.
If I buy this shovel, what other equipment will I need to clear my sidewalks/driveway like a snow pro? Truly, you need nothing more. Just the good work ethic you already have. You were made for this. That said, you may benefit from the addition of some good footwear, a decent pair of high-dexterity protective gloves (think “mechanic style”), a hooded sweatshirt, a means for hydration, and a positive attitude.
