Good basic electronic smoker to start with and mod friendly
I've burned up plenty of electronic smokers over the years. I prefer basic analog electronic smokers, because they're easier to trouble shoot and easier to replace parts on as needed. This Dyna-glo is a basic unit but has some pretty good important basic features, the wracks have groves and stay in place, there is a spring loaded door or chute to load more wood chips as you go without opening the unit. The heat element is not touching any of the other parts to avoid shorting easily. There's basically nothing to break. There's no exhaust fan but it has a smoke hole outlet (you can mod your own smoke exhaust if you want). The temperature gauge is basically useless, it just lets you know its getting warm in there, but the temp is way off. I tested mine and I was able to get to nearly 370F via my accurate probe internally with smoke going, while the external stock gauge barely registered 300F. This is not a big problem, you should use accurate probes anyways. It comes with metal stands. The whole thing is all metal. No plastic parts at all other than the electric plug. Assembly is straight forward, easy. This model is ultra friendly to someone who likes to modify and add things to their smoker. It's a blank slate.

Ratings were a 4 for this, so I ordered it. With ratings being hit or miss, here is how to make it better. So the heating element was not touching the chip pan and just toasted the chips, making little smoke in 2 hr test run. After doing some research and ppl hating this thing, well just adjusting the chip pan edges up so the pan site down near the heating element and slightly pushing up the element, it all works just fine. You just have to see if the way it was put together was working properly, so you might have to tweak it. It smokes now! Purchased to smoke no meat items, veggies and spices. But to get meat center temp, may take a good 12hrs like the pros do! Do not give up on your self or the smoker.

I purchased this in Dec 2017 and have used it about two dozen times. It just gets better every time I use it. It arrived with an incorrect smoke shelf and a torn door seal. Dyna-Glo customer service jumped right on it; I had new parts in a few days. The shelves are a bit tricky at first as they sort of lock in place when fully inserted and take a little upward pressure in the back to snap them free. It takes about 10 minutes after turning the smoker on for the smoke to start. I’ve used it with both wet & dry cherry, hickory and mesquite chips; all make plenty of smoke. The most impressive part is temperature accuracy and very little fluctuation either side of the target temp. At a target of 225, after the first 20-30 minutes it stays in a plus or minus 5 degree range. At lower temps, however, it tends to cook hotter than the target temp. Specifically, when set at 170, the box temp is actually 180-190; but almost all I do is closer to 225 so that deviation is a non-problem for me. It has a built-in meat probe which is spot on accurate. The only problem is that it’s not detachable so cleaning it involves bringing soap and water to the probe instead of taking the probe to the sink. I use an external remote control dual probe thermometer anyway, so I keep the built-in probe in its holder. I also did at least a dozen test runs with other thermometers on various places in the smoker to verify temp accuracy. When testing with water in the pan, damper closed and no food inside, there was moisture buildup inside which leaked about ¼ cup on the lanai. But with food inside and damper open there has not been a drop. The two wheels in the back make it easy to relocate and the outside of the box is barely warm (except the back wall). It’s cool enough on the top that I can set the remote thermometer on it. This is absolutely a set-and-forget smoker and I would definitely buy it again.

Honestly, read the reviews, the actual reviews, this thing is the definition of design flaw. So it began with what I thought was an informed, well thought out purchase. In retrospect it was me being cheap. So I "seasoned" the smoker as per the instructions, everything worked and heated properly. I cooked once in the same day on the smoker. During the cooking process all the oils and fats from the meat dripped into the water pan, the wood chip, and the bottom of the smoker itself. The wood chips wouldn't smoke and the drippings ran down the legs of the smoker onto my deck. I cleaned the smoker with warm soapy water and protected it with esinkin smoker cover.
The next weekend I tried to use the smoker, it wouldn't heat past 220. There were 3 attempts that weekend but all failed. The next step for me was to call customer service.
I call customer service the first time and the guy tells me I need to "plug the smoker into a construction grade, orange extension cord and this will double my amps". At this point it takes everything in me not to tell this person where they're at, on an intelligence level, but I humor him to see what other options are available. The next option is that he can have a new temperature reading gauge sent to me, nope that's not the problem, I need the temperature control module I tell him. He says they'll pull the control off of a new one and send it right out... 3 days later I receive the temperature reading gauge I told the guy not to send that it wasn't needed.
Round two with customer service begins. This guy tells me that the correct part was indeed sent. That I need to send a picture of the wrong part and a copy of my receipt, ok done. 8 days later here we are with no word from this company and no fix for my broken, design flawed, messy, POS smoker.

I've used this twice, now. Three chickens and a pound of almonds. My wife is planning to make chicken soup from the carcasses of the chickens. The smoky flavor in the soup is a really nice twist.

The temperature probe feature is a must have for me, now. The birds have come out perfectly because of this. My last smoker did not have the probe and we had a few birds that had to be finished in the oven.

Really happy with this unit. Looking forward to smoking two turkeys at Thanksgiving.

Now...need to pick up a salmon to try that...

UPDATE: 2 12+ pound turkeys smoked with Hickory chips. 250°F for 4 hours. Delicious! This smoker is a hit!

* Solid and well built
* Easy to assemble
* Lots of room to smoke multiple foods
* Much safer and easier to use than charcoal or propane gas smokers
* Does a great job smoking food (once you know what you're doing)
* Great price

* Wood and water trays are undersized for the smoker's actual capacity
* Thermostat is inaccurate by at least 50 - 75 degrees
* Requires almost as much monitoring as a charcoal or gas smoker due to a couple of design flaws

The Dyna-Glo DGU505BAE-D 30" is a vertical style smoker that uses a modern electric heating element instead of charcoal or propane to provide both cooking heat and wood smoke. While this is blasphemy for hardcore barbecuers, it is also much safer and easier to use than a charcoal or gas grill. Which is exactly why I'm able to safely use one on my apartment building balcony where charcoal and propane grills are understandably banned from use for obvious safety and insurance reasons.

The smoker is extremely easy to assemble, with all the required parts included and excellent instructions. It's sturdy and well built from quality material. There are 4 shelves and plenty of room inside for smoking foods. The heating element sits at the bottom of the smoker and heats up the wood chips or pellets as well as water if desired in trays that sit above the heating element. Once assembled, smoking is insanely easy to do right away.

While easy to assemble and use, I must make clear that the smoker is NOT a plug and play endeavor. There are a trio of design flaws that have to be pointed out which makes your constant attention to the smoking process necessary just as a charcoal or gas smoker would. Don't think you can walk away just because it's electric. Unless you enjoy overdone food. 1. There is no top flue to let the smoke out like there is on a Masterbuilt electric smoker. There is a little pipe insert at the top rear that is far, far too small to be of any actual use. As a result, the smoke escapes out the easiest place it can -- through the door itself. You'll see it escape via the top left and right of the smoker where the door seal is. This is completely normal and given the design flaw, it's actually desirable as you wouldn't want the smoke trapped inside the smoker. 2. The wood chip tray and water tray are both far too small for the large capacity of the smoker. 3. The front door thermometer is inaccurate, being off from the actual temperature inside by 50 - 75 degrees. So when it indicates you're in the desired 200 - 250 F range for smoking, you're actually way higher at 275 - 425 degrees.

These are certainly seriously design flaws but also easy to overcome. For the thermostat, shoot to get it to read in the 150 F range and don't let it get past the 200 F marker. You will need to manage the thermostat controller on the heating element properly for this. For the tray issue, I simply put aside the included trays and instead use a standard cast iron smoker box that I place directly on the heating element and a very large metal bowl for holding the water which I place on the bottom grate.

Once you are aware of these flaws and how to manage them well, you'll find this is a pretty good smoker. The huge amount of room and vertical shape gives you a lot of options in your smoking. Food comes out great as you can see in my pictures, with the telltale pinkish hue that indicates the food has properly absorbed the flavorful wood smoke.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great unit, went together well, everything aligns, designed well, works well.

This is our first smoker. I studied the topic for quite sometime and decided to go with an analog electric model. I honestly would have preferred a digitally controlled un it with Bluetooth however I found a discouraging amount of negative reviews regarding the robustness of the digital controls and Bluetooth connectivity issues. Hence the analog purchase.
our initial order was delayed because the unit was damaged in shipping. A replacement unit was shipped promptly and arrived within a few days. it must have been expedited.
The unit was packaged very well. Disassembly of the packaging went well. Everything was there and in place. One can see the engineering that went into this unit. All the holes lined up. Everything assembled easily and as it should. The instruction sheet may be a tad light on detail, but I was still overall impressed.
I followed the directions as laid out. 5 + stars.
First run was at max temp with wood chips only, no water, for 2 hours, as per instructions. No issues.
Our first smoking attempt was with a pork loin. I utilized a meat probe, but didn't believe the internal temp could be reached so fast, so I left it on about 30 minutes longer. Meat was just a tad dry, but that was my fault. Also, noted at completion the water reservoir was dry. I have since established that at even low temps (200F) the water reservoir requires replenishment aprox every hour. (I'm assuming ambient humidity and perhaps altitude may change the timing)
Instead of opening the door to add water, (which dissipates all your hard earned heat) I insert a length of copper water pipe through the wood chip door, and add water via the copper pipe. (See photos.) I've established aprox 16 ounces (500ml) fills the reservoir from empty. I marked the copper fill pipe so I know how far into the smoker I need to insert it, to reach the water reservoir. Works very very well. Ensuring the water reservoir is empty prior to refilling is imperative.
One needs to be VERY diligent not to overfill the reservoir with water, as spilling water onto hot oils/grease accumulated in the bottom of the smoker has the potential to combust. BE VERY CAREFUL!!! Fire is a real threat. As is damaging the heating coil. Do your homework. Know how long it takes to empty the reservoir by opening the main door and viewing the reservoir until you establish a system/time frame. Proceed at your own risk.
Wonderful unit! Bravo!

My first smoker. Read a lot on smokers and reviews and decided to buy one. Here are some keypoints from me after using this daily for over a week.
1.do not care about reviews that talk about it not smoking up
-in my exp with hickory,apple n cherry it smokes up at 165f every time. It takes about 10min to preheat (no big deal and expected)
2.very easy to use and if you want to have hustle free cooking experience buy it
3.great as daily cooker
4.great auroma therapy
5.attached thermometet is only to be used for big portions (whole chicken) .
6.Please buy digital meat thermometer for best results (must buy for smoking food)
7.good for the price
8.good first smoker

Bon apetite all !

First smoker. Used once to smoke hamburgers, hotdogs and once for moose peperettes. Seems to lose a lot of smoke from the door... not sure if this is normal. Overall; price, quality, and ease of use... I'm satisfied!

Although it seems well made, it did not live up to the promise of reaching temperatures anywhere near 300 degrees. It will barely reach 200 degrees which is not hot enough to get the wood chips to smoke. As a smoker it is a complete fail. I would love to send this back as it’s no good to me as a smoker. Very disappointing.
