Now... I can't mow my *entire* yard on a single charge, but this mower does allow me to mow about 2/3 in one go. That's fine by me, however, since I typically split my mowing into two sessions anyway. I use a combination of self propel and good old fashioned muscle power. The more you use the self propel, the lower your range will be. If you don't use it at all, your range will be much higher. I haven't had any real reason to use the turbo button yet (I do press it occasionally because it's fun to press a button that says TURBO and hear the motor go VRRRRRM), but it's a nice feature nonetheless.
And if I wanted to, I could buy two more 24v batteries and get everything done all at once, or four more batteries and probably just mow forever. That's always an option with electric mowers. More batteries = more mowing, if you're willing and able to spend the money.
In every other way, this mower is better than I expected. Easy to put together and get going, good looking, cuts well, pleasantly quiet. No complaints whatsoever, honestly.
So yeah, for an occasional self propel user like me, I would say:
Small yard (<.3 acres) definitely buy it.
Medium yard (.3-.5 acres) probably buy it.
Larger yard (>.5 acres), gas is still probably the way to go.
Pros:
- Less noise
- Easy to assemble and use
- Self propel function is great. On fastest settings you have to walk really fast behind it.
- Not very heavy.
Cons
- My yard is fairly big and has an incline. Even with 4 x 4.0 Ah batteries, I have a hard time completing the job in one charge. It needs only two batteries at a time. 4 batteries combined, do not last more than 30-35 minutes for me.
- Whenever I plug in my batteries after mowing, red light on the charger lights up indicating that the batteries over heated during the use. I am afraid the batteries will wear out more quickly if they heat up every time on use.
- Mower turns off automatically if it cannot handle the resistance from mowing. I had to raise my mower a few times to keep it running in some areas.
I've had this baby for a year and change now and I can't believe why I didn't go cordless sooner.
This mower mows! Easier to handle; quieter running; more cut settings than gas mower; stows away neatly.
Cherry on the cake: No oil change, no oil filter, no stalling, no carburetor issues, no hauling to repair shops.
Maintenance reduced to an air blast and a wipe down. I'm sipping mojitos after my lawn is done.
Downside: Won't take the longer life battery, but with the four it has I get the job done.
First of all there are 4 battery ports onboard the lawnmower deck and right away I could tell 2 of them were not working. Only the front 2 ports would pull power from the batteries so I’ve been using it just 2 at a time. No big deal right? Well the run time on these batteries is much less than the advertised (up to) 70 minutes combined. Where I was able to just about get my lawn done every time with the black and decker I’m not even getting half done now before I have to charge all 4 batteries.
Pros:
It works well.
It cuts well.
…when it’s charged
Cons:
Low runtime compared to what is advertised
Ports may or may not work
Inaccurate battery led on handle
Batteries overheat easily leaving you waiting to start charging them
If you get this mower test it out before the return window. I may have received a lemon I have to deal with but you don’t have to.
