Baby Caterpillars Grow Inside of the CupThis set comes with a cup including five live baby caterpillars. The inside of the cup includes all the nutritious food that caterpillars need, so they can eat and grow until it is time to create their chrysalides (commonly referred to as cocoons). Place the cup in a safe place away from direct sunlight. The caterpillars will remain in the cup and will eat, spin silk, and grow to ten times their original size! After seven to ten days they will hang upside down and harden into chrysalides. |
Watch them Transform in Front of Your EyesWhen the caterpillars have reached the chrysalis stage, you can place the lid from the cup in the deluxe chrysalis station and place it inside of the specially designed mesh garden. It will take about seven to ten more days for them to complete the transformation to adult butterflies. Once the butterflies emerge, you can feed them with the included feeding dropper, flower-shaped butterfly feeder, and butterfly nectar recipe. |
Set Your Butterflies FreeEnjoy your butterflies for a few days, let them go, and watch in excitement as they continue their amazing life cycle. Release your butterflies within a week of their emergence from the chrysalides when daytime temperatures are above 55 degrees. Simply take the butterfly habitat out to your yard, unzip the cover, and let your butterflies go. Butterflies will often land on little hands and faces before flying away. Keep an eye out for your butterfly friends, as they may decide to remain in your garden for a few days. |

I would recommend this kit to anyone--young or old. It's not a difficult project, but the process is fascinating and educational.
The kit came from California, and the painted lady butterflies are supposed to be all over America. All the pieces, except maybe one packet of sugar, were in the kit with five live caterpillars. The caterpillars didn't move much the first day, and one seemed dead upon arrival; but all five ate and moved around within a day or so.
Great kit, great project, and wonderful experience.
Sellers should put a note to this effect on the Amazon page.
It is a wonderful kit though and it will be fun to watch the transformation.
*if you think they’re dead, just wait!* I admit that my initial impression of this was not good, as it appeared that all of the caterpillars were dead when the kit arrived. The stuff at the bottom of the cups was also brown and didn’t look good. I thought maybe they died in the crazy heat we were having. I set the whole box aside for a day or two and when I checked again, they had all made chrysalises! I didn’t show my daughter the kit until this point because I was sure they were dead, so unfortunately she missed part of the life cycle, but she was absolutely thrilled anyway! She’s named all of the chrysalises already and is using the journal that came with the kit to write her observations and draw pictures, etc. (she is 7 years old, by the way). She can’t wait for the butterflies to emerge! We’ll see if they do and if they survive, but so far this has been worth every penny.
I gave this a 4 star only because of the larvae issue. This butterfly kit is more expensive than some other kits so it was disappointing. It really deserves a 5 otherwise.
