Pride and Protest Kindle Edition

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 287 ratings

A Phenomenal Book Club pick for November 2022!

A woman goes head-to-head with the CEO of a corporation threatening to destroy her neighborhood in this fresh and modern retelling of
Pride and Prejudice by debut author Nikki Payne.

Liza B.—the only DJ who gives a jam—wants to take her neighborhood back from the soulless property developer dropping unaffordable condos on every street corner in DC. But her planned protest at a corporate event takes a turn after she mistakes the smoldering-hot CEO for the waitstaff. When they go toe-to-toe, the sparks fly—but her impossible-to-ignore family thwarts her every move. Liza wants Dorsey Fitzgerald out of her hood, but she’ll settle for getting him out of her head.

At first, Dorsey writes off Liza Bennett as more interested in
performing outrage than acting on it. As the adopted Filipino son of a wealthy white family, he’s always felt a bit out of place and knows a fraud when he sees one. But when Liza’s protest results in a viral meme, their lives are turned upside down, and Dorsey comes to realize this irresistible revolutionary is the most real woman he’s ever met.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"A spectacular, unputdownable debut that just rocketed its way onto my 'Forever Faves' shelf. The sharpest, sexiest, wittiest, brightest Pride and Prejudice retelling I've ever read, period. Nikki Payne is the writer I aspire to be, and I'm going to recommend this novel to everyone I know, every chance I get!"—Ali Hazelwood, New York Times bestselling author of Love on the Brain

"An entertaining and politically charged retelling of
Pride and Prejudice that tackles gentrification, prejudice, and the intersections of race, class, and gender...The redevelopment plot puts a fresh twist on familiar beats and the enemies-to-lovers romance sizzles. This is good fun.”—Publishers Weekly

"Payne has managed what I thought was no longer possible: to write a
Pride and Prejudice retelling that feels completely fresh and yet absolutely grounded in Jane Austen’s beloved romance...Liza and Dorsey’s romance comes with the sizzling animosity we expect from this classic enemies-to-lovers storyline while deftly tackling heavy themes like generational trauma and classism with humor and heart. This debut is incandescent."—The Washington Post

"This new imagining of
Pride and Prejudice is an inventive take on a classic love story."—BuzzFeed Books

There is a reason the same story can be told over and over and never get old. There are certain ideas we love to revisit. As an anthropologist, I understand the power of a well told fairy tale and am unapologetic about my love for Romance Tropes.

I believe in building the world I want to live in, so my heroes and heroines come from many backgrounds - though I borrow heavily from my own southern African American experience.

Church on Sunday and romance novels are some of the most racially segregated spaces, as such, multicultural love still strikes me as the last frontier in romance writing and in creating shared understanding.

By day I am a PhD cultural anthropologist, solving big tech problems - by night, I dream of subverting classic literature.

🌶️🌶️.5

Opposites attract + enemies to lovers + BIPOC rep + Social justice + Dual POV + Hilarious side characters

This retelling of Pride and Prejudice is witty, sexy, and brings the story into the modern world discussing race, gentrification, classism and sexism. I’m obsessed with the way the author used this premise of the original book to delve into these issues. Particularly issues around class and gentrification. On top of the top tier social commentary through the lens of a story that is timeless, the actually romance and characters were fantastic. I loved how layered and well developed they were. They both fight internal struggles about wanting to be with the other but their love is the all consuming dive head first into magic. The cast of characters and their parallels to the original is just *chefs kiss*. Truly I enjoyed this book way more than I have any other retelling including movies.

I’m not going to write out all the ways this book parallels to Austens but this is worth the read even if you don’t care for the original. My one issues was I wish there would’ve been more queer rep outside of saying the FMC advocates for the LGBTQIA+ community and then having several homophobic comments made by her family/friends with no accountability held towards them for those comments. Honestly the author could’ve just said she advocated for the LGBTQIA+ community and left the rest out. Especially since there is one gay character and thats only mentioned in passing a few times.

I really enjoyed this book. I came to read this book because Nikki Payne came to Steamy Lit Con with such a positive energy. I love how this story had a diverse love match as Dorsey was Filipino adopted by Asian parents with a Kenyan adopted sister. There were self identity issues coupled with the outside world perception of them.
Liza comes in with her own family dynamics and her own prejudices about Dorsey.
Their meeting was probably one of the funniest parts of the book for me. Then their text conversations were a good and gradual growth to learn about each others.
The character development here was solid and the chemistry between the Lizzie and Dorsey was sexy. I enjoyed their candor with their various besties.

What a cute retelling and a really good debut for this author.

I really, really wanted to love this one and I honestly thought that I would, but it was just okay for me in the long run. This is one that I felt like did a lot, but also not a lot at the same time. This is a Pride and Prejudice reimagining and I can't speak on how well that is done, because I've not read it. I did like the relationship between Liza and her siblings, it felt very realistic. I liked both MC enough, but they were not my favorite. Dorsey especially is someone that I liked more in his chapters and inner monologue, but hated how he came off on page with literally everyone else. As far as the relationship between the MC's I would say it was okay, but not my favorite and very instalovey, and instalusty. I appreciated the conversations about gentrification, but I thought it would be way more centered around that, but to me it felt like an afterthought. Even though this was not my favorite book, I am really excited to read the next book in the series, and I hope it works better for me.

I normally avoid Jane Austen adaptations because I’m usually disappointed. Not this time! Nikki Payne grabbed my attention right away by painting a picture of Liza’s family which is how I fell in love with Pride and Prejudice in high school. Crazy chaotic families really resonate with me. From there she gave me new versions of Liza and Dorsey to meet and fall in love with. She took them on a journey that mirrored the original and hit all the beloved lines while still introducing us to a new time and place and culture.

I have to say I totally love her for how she handled the WIC situation and actually prefer it to the original outcome?

These wonderfully flawed characters got to live out the fantasy version of P&P that I didn’t know I needed but am grateful to have now!

Yup, it's another interpretation of Pride and Prejudice and yes, I loved it.

In this version, Liza is a struggling radio DJ in DC. She lives with her mom, Granny, sisters Janae and LeDeya and their brother Maurice. And Pemberly Development is threatening to gentrify their neighborhood and cause them to lose their home.

Dorsey was born in the Phillipines but was adopted by the wealthy Fitzgeralds. He has lost his parents and is trying to do right by them by acting as CEO of the development company. But what he really wants to do is keep his adoptive mom's charity funded.

This one was so true to the source material but really well updated for current day. It is also definitely the steamiest version of the story that I've read. Even though I had a pretty good idea of how things would turn out, I was still really invested and even a bit misty at the end. Recommend!

10/10 this was so entertaining and omg so funny. The amount of times I laughed out loud reading this. And Dorsey was so HORNY! I ate it up I fear. I've never read the original pride and prejudice but this was so a good modern romcom spin. The bennets were a hot mess but they were still family! All the characters had their own flaws and they all felt fleshed out really well. I literally have no complaints and the epilogue was so cute.

4.0 out of 5 stars A fun modern twist to my favourite classic!

TL;DR: I've been looking forward to reading this ever since I first heard about it and I'm glad that I finally did. While there were elements I wanted more of I found myself enjoying this a lot! I especially loved the chemistry between Dorsey and Liza and I ate their romance up. The angst, tension, the way the atmosphere in the room changed when they came into contact, their peak horniness—honestly, it was a fun sexual vibe! 🥵 The Bennett family was a mess in their usual way but I appreciated the inclusion of modern issues such as gentrification and the way the story was conveyed through alternating POVs and mixed media. Overall, this was a witty, funny, and entertaining P&P retelling and I can't wait to read more by this author!

I admit that it took me a minute to get into the story and feel invested in the characters but when I did, I sped through it and finished it in less than a day. This does rely heavily on the original but I enjoyed the way Payne implanted the story into a modern setting with a few twists to the character arcs. I loved that we got dual POVs because it gave so much more insight into Dorsey's and Liza's characters, particularly Dorsey's and the very cold, confused, snobby exterior that he presents throughout much of the story. I loved Liza's radio host gig and the way she used her social media popularity to effect change in her neighbourhood. I admired her grit and tenacity and while I always rooted for her to grow and find success, there were also more than a few times when I wanted to give her a couple of good shakes when her stubbornness and pride kept getting in her way. In lots of ways, Dorsey is similar to her with his pride and prejudice and for a while there, he was truly an insufferable douche. 😂 But as his arc evolves, we learn about his insecurities being the Filipino adopted son of a rich white family, and his struggles to fit in and live up to the family name now that it's just him and Gigi. Deep down, under all that uppity persona, he's just this incredibly nerdy bundle of nerves and anxiety, who's doing what he doesn't want to do only to keep his family legacy alive. He's a completely besotted fool for Liza and I loved seeing him unravel every time she came near him.

While the story revolves around the protests against the gentrification of Liza's neighbourhood, their romance also takes centre stage. The insatiable longing, lust and feelings they keep hidden from each other and the public had me in a heckuva hold! First of all, these two were horny AF and Dorsey especially so. 😂 But Payne wrote their chemistry so well that it was off the charts! The mutual pining, the secret text messages, the 36 questions to fall in love, and the passion... All of it was just so well written and the combination resulted in some incendiary moments that I swore would have my Kindle melting from all the heat.

As I mentioned before, there were some elements I wanted more of and while I think it would've made this a solid 5-star read for me and perhaps even a new favourite this year, it didn't end up influencing how I felt about this too much. That said, I wish that the relationships beyond the romance had been explored more. Liza and Janae traditionally have a very close bond but in this book, it felt very distanced and I missed their connection a lot! I also wished that Gigi, who was incredible, got even more page time. I loved her arc and I wanted to know so much more about her and see more of her relationship with Dorsey because they had such a great sibling connection. Some side characters got their ARCs fleshed out a bit more here (Deya) but most of them were props to push the story along and I'm bummed that the whole WIC storyline felt so undercooked and unbelievable. I didn't for a second believe that WIC had a hold over Liza and yet the arc went on for so long! The man couldn't even fake investment in a second and neither could I.

Overall, I'm so glad I finally read this. It gave me all the delicious butterflies that I hadn't felt in a while and it was so good to feel! 😍 I can't wait to read the next retelling by Payne. I wonder if we'll get any cameos from some of these characters and if so how many we'll get—I'm eager to find out!
