Dr. Mitchell is credited with the development and implementation of The Intermittent Auscultation Checklist to assist medical industrial complexes in identifying low-risk laboring individuals and guide them towards appropriate methods of fetal monitoring. Prior to the development of Birth Sanctuary Gainesville, located in Alabama, Stephanie worked in Boston Massachusetts, and Providence Rhode Island in full-scope collaborative OB-GYN/Midwifery and academic practices. In her spare time, you can find Stephanie vlogging, blogging, and outside of a pandemic, traveling with her partner and children to expand her zest for unique food experiences. Her philosophy is that human labor and birth are normal and healthy processes for the majority of individuals. Some of the science and expertise behind midwifery is identifying those who would benefit from medical interventions while maintaining normalcy for the remainder of those who do not require obtrusion. Dr. Mitchell understands that collaborative care along with respect for the autonomy of birthing individuals is the threshold of improving morbidity and mortality outcomes for birthing bodies, and is a huge part of the very specific ways to address the disparities in outcomes for black birthing bodies in the United States Stephanie believes that information dissemination can look a variety of ways and that educators should not limit their possibility for impact by finding effective tools, methods, and techniques to educate. She ofte uses humor can make difficult to talk about topics, more palatable. Many people would say that Dr. Mitchell is funny.

Phenomenal! Informational! Must discover!
Dr. Stephanie wrote this book with everyone in mind! The First Time Childbirth Handbook touches on every single birth topic you may encounter. From curating a discussion plan about birth until the moments after baby is born. This book breaks down the postpartum period that is rarely thought about and so much more. It helps one make decisions when expecting by giving readers a variety of personal birth story perspectives, with examples of hospital as well as home and birth center births.Along with real scenarios, this book is rooted in evidence-based facts. Every word in this book encourages the birthing person to envision their desired birth while educating us on the body’s normal birth process. To assist with better birth outcomes Dr. Stephanie created a method - I absolutely love - that discusses birth preferences. She labels it “discussion plan” and suggests that it should be followed in congruence with your provider before writing an actual birth plan. Coming from a professional birth keeper’s perspective I say, “It is down right genius!”I love the empowerment this book provides its readers. The real birth stories she includes helps the reader discover different avenues to take while providing foresight into likely outcomes for their own births. Another section in the book that I deeply appreciated was about birth support from doulas; exceptional doulas to be exact! Dr. Stephanie does an excellent job shining light on ways doulas can assist laboring people while working alongside birth providers.Of the 164 pages in her book literally every one is filled with helpful facts and to top that off she devotes eight additional pages of non bias references to back up every thing she writes. Overall, I support all information surrounding a safe path to birth. This book will 100% ease anyone’s mind as they plan for a fearless birth!Yours truly,IvoriEarnest Life Doula*Disclaimer: I received an advance copy from the publisher. My thoughts are unsolicited.

I am a midwife and I give each of my first time clients a copy of this book when they sign on for care. Dr. Mitchell is an expert in pregnancy and birth both in and out of the hospital setting. This book is a great intro for first time parents to learn about their options and figure out what their preferences are. You can only make the choices that are presented as available to you and this book helps provide a solid foundation about figuring out what might work best for you and work as a communication and discussion tool with your provider. People should feel empowered to communicate their wishes and be treated with dignity and respect during the most sacred experiences of their lives.

This book is written so well and put together in a way that very overwhelmed parents to be can easily manage it. She explained things in a way that is detailed enough to make your own decisions about but doesn’t give so much information that it’s too much. An easy quick read with great illustrations.
