Ergo, the decision to leave... this time around ?
This movie is visually, emotionally beautiful and to say it is thought provoking is an understatement.
All throughout my brain was working, being led down varied pathways of possibilities.
Who is who and why ? Whose story are we actually privy to ? Why are they in this state exactly and how do the various characters and themes or situations relate to one another as well as the whole ?
"To be or not to be ? That is the question."
Only after becoming aware of how many directions were offered, touched upon, and so followed further briefly to be stored whilst searching for the actual conclusion.
What or which is the reality ?
In a world of Quantum Physics, parallel universes, free will and inevitable death when faced with a choice how might it be made ?
If the whole world is inside this dream, where all is connected, a part of, and every player is also ourselves, all possibilities will be played out, realities to be.
In the end, or rather in this end as we look up from the subject's POV are we seeing our soulmates and fellow travelers ? Is this the core group with us on the journey of our education of the soul ?
In the review of this decision they each played a part. The little boy, a mirror of the question before us evident in the surface of a balloon. The one willing to be further involved only if we wish to help ourselves. One understanding the need to leave something of value, so evaluating that. One desperate to find the reason to stay; etc... All of them are us.
One reminds us that the clarity to see beyond this reality goes with us only.
What is left to do, who to love, what to sustain us beyond if we remain ? Are we taking it all with us here and so completed ? Can the pain and guilt we will experience be overcome, or will our desolation be beyond our ability, without equal purpose ?
"To be or not to be, that is the question..."
Whether it is only the next question or the last is to be decided by the one making it in this version of their story.
Will it go on, or willfully ended ?
Ending one's own life termed as suicide.
For myself, this film was showing me a reminder of the possibilities inherent to an infinite soul. As well, that it would be such a tiny part of something so vast to still be beyond my true comprehension. Yet, even so, enough to fill the heart and a whole lifetime.
Those were the thoughts of meaning it provoked in me, personally.
However, it may have other meaning to someone else entirely.
The art of it was so masterful, as in all of the various arts necessary to bring it to being.
It is definitely worthy of being given the opportunity to see what or if it has meaning for you.
Suggest allowing it a try with your mind and feeling to wander guided by it as it comes.
Enjoy your journey.
I imagine it may haunt me from time to time for a long time.

It's hard for me to explain all the ways this movie has affected me, and exactly what I think about it, but I know for sure I can't say enough good things about it, technically or aesthetically. I think if the standard by which to judge a movie is its effectiveness, then this movie *excelled*. A comedy makes us laugh--it is therefore good. Horror makes us feel some flavor of Bad, then it's good. This movie, I think, was meant to make us think, and dig through the puzzle pieces, and think some more, so if you're the kind of person who likes to think about your movies way too much, then this movie IS GOOD. It's effective at what it was trying to accomplish. I've seen it countless times now over the years and it's one of my favorites, but I still find myself spotting a new detail or symbol each time and pondering over it.
I honestly don't think the ending "erased" the entire movie, as many people have complained. It is not just an "it was all a dream" cop-out movie where nothing makes sense the entire time and then it ends with a BS explanation. Everything in the movie makes sense, and it has meaning and purpose, it's beautiful and tragic, psychological and philosophical.
I see that complaint a lot, about it being a cop-out or a waste of time because it was all a "dream," and at first I understood it (especially after the first time). But after a few more viewings, not only did I start noticing more and having more of those "ah-ha!" moments, but it also started to make me think about ego death and the concept of interconnectedness with humanity (like in Buddhism for example). It made me think about how I imagine the process of dying affects your consciousness--your identity vanishes and your memories just splice into each other as the last of your neurons fire away, losing the memories and pieces of yourself that make you You, and eventually you lose your entire self into the "nothing" of death. You lose your self and therefore can be anybody else, like how Henry and Sam trade places/identities in the movie a lot. So in a way, at least in my interpretation, it feels like everything in the movie DID happen and the events we saw DID matter, because essentially, they DID happen to Henry, and in a spiritual way maybe they happened to everyone else in the movie too, and maybe even us as viewers.
That all sounds a bit hokey, but looking at it as a piece of art, I've decided that that's my interpretation of this incredibly ambitious and thoughtful story, and I love that it exists.

Was great in the movie
As always
Much as I enjoyed the film, I suspect it's not going to appeal to everybody. Anybody expecting fast paced action and/or a classic horror flick will likely be disappointed. This is the kind of drama where you have to pay close attention to detail to understand what is going on.
The DVD I bought (uncut version) has subtitles for those who may need. The extra features included didn't do much for me. There is a "Departing Visions" Featurette and several Scene Specific Commentaries with the director and some cast and crew members. They are easily the worst commentary tracks I've come across. There's a lot of slightly too fast babbling by the director and a few not particularly interesting or enlightening remarks by others. At one point the director actually asks somebody not give away some titbit of information, but keep it for the anniversary edition. Really?
