The New Confessions of an Economic Hit Man Kindle Edition

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 1,764 ratings

Featuring 15 explosive new chapters, this new edition of the New York Times bestseller brings the story of Economic Hit Men up-to-date and, chillingly, home to the U.S.―but it also gives us hope and the tools to fight back.

The previous edition of this now-classic book revealed the existence and subversive manipulations of "economic hit men. John Perkins wrote that they are highly paid professionals who cheat countries around the globe out of trillions of dollars. Their tools include fraudulent financial reports, rigged elections, payoffs, extortion, sex, and murder. In Perkins's case the tool was debt-convincing strategically important countries to borrow huge amounts of money for enormous, development projects that served the very rich while driving the country deeper into poverty and debt. And once indebted, these countries could be controlled.

In this latest edition, Perkins provides revealing new details about how he and others did their work. But more importantly, in an explosive new section he describes how the EHM tools are being used around the world more widely than ever-even in the U. S. itself. The cancer has metastasized, yet most people still aren't aware of it. Fear and debt drive the EHM system. We are hammered with messages that terrify us into believing that we must pay any price, assume any debt, to stop the enemies who, we are told, lurk at our doorsteps. The EHM system-employing false economics, bribes, surveillance, deception, debt, coups, assassinations, unbridled military power-has become the dominant system of economics, government, and society today. It has created what Perkins calls a Death Economy. But Perkins offers hope: he concludes with dozens of specific, concrete suggestions for actions all of us can take to wrest control of our world away from the economic hit men, and help give birth to a Life Economy.

Editorial Reviews

Review

''The New Confessions offers deep insights into the nefarious ways economic hit men and jackals have expanded their powers. It shows how they came home to roost in the United States -- as well as the rest of the world. It is a brilliant and bold book that illuminates the crises we now face and offers a road map to stop them.'' --John Gray, #1 New York Times bestselling author

''When I read
Confessions of an Economic Hit Man, I could not have known that, some years later, I would be on the receiving end of the type of 'economic hit' that Perkins so vividly narrated. The New Confessions resonates with my experiences of the brutish methods and gross economic irrationality guiding powerful institutions in their bid to undermine democratic control over economic power. Perkins has, once again, made a substantial contribution to a world that needs whistle-blowers to open its eyes to the true sources of political, social, and economic power.'' --Yanis Varoufakis, former minister of finance, Greece

''I loved
Confessions of an Economic Hit Man. Ten years ago it exposed the real story. The New Confessions tells the rest of that story -- the terrible things that have happened since and what we all can do to turn a death economy into a life economy.'' --Yoko Ono

''Extraordinary and gripping...Think John le Carre, except it's a true story.'' --Amazon.com on
Confessions of an Economic Hit Man

''This riveting look at a world of intrigue reads like a spy novel.'' --
Library Journal on Confessions of an Economic Hit Man

''One of the most remarkable books I have read in a long time. It is also one of the most frightening.'' --
New Statesman on Confessions of an Economic Hit Man

John Perkins is an author and activist whose 10 books on global intrigue, shamanism, and transformation including "Touching the Jaguar," "Shapeshifting" and the classic "Confessions of an Economic Hit Man" have been on the New York Times bestseller list for more than 70 weeks, sold over 2 million copies and are published in at least 35 languages.

As chief economist at a major consulting firm, John advised the World Bank, United Nations, Fortune 500 corporations, US and other governments. He regularly speaks at universities, economic forums, and shamanic gatherings around the world and is a founder and board member of the Pachamama Alliance and Dream Change, nonprofit organizations that partner with indigenous people to protect environments and that offer global programs to change the destructive ways of industrial societies.

John advises corporations, executives, and entrepreneurs on ways to make the transition from a Death Economy (exploiting resources that are declining at accelerating rates) to a Life Economy (cleaning up pollution, recycling, and other technologies that create regenerative life-styles and economies) -- a subject that is detailed in "Touching the Jaguar."

John has lived four lives: as an economic hit man (EHM); as the CEO of a successful alternative energy company, who was rewarded for not disclosing his EHM past; as an expert on indigenous cultures and shamanism, a teacher and writer who used this expertise to promote ecology and sustainability while continuing to honor his vow of silence about his life as an EHM; and as a writer who, in telling the real-life story about his extraordinary dealings as an EHM, has exposed the world of international intrigue and corruption that is turning the American republic into a global empire despised by increasing numbers of people around the planet.

My eyes have been open for quite a while already, so to me this is not an eye opener. This is something that would assure you that you were right suspecting about many dirty things that governments have done. The sad thing is that nothing has changed. In fact, as the book explains, China is following the footsteps of the U.S. now and doing the same trying to "takeover" the poor and unsuspecting countries. The problem is that the people who are doning these kind of things are above the law, somewhere in a dark room, or in the middle of the desert they tie you up bit you up and kill you. And there is nothing that you can do to save yourself let alone a country. Read it, understand it, be open minded and if you are strong enough and you have the will and the energy... try changing the world. I know that I can't do it. I tried talking to people but they are brain dead, "give me my toaster" type of personalities. Good luck to humans. The psychopaths rule the world unfortunately.

There is a lot to consider in this book, and the author makes an effort to provide a substantial list of sources to further explore the claims he makes.
The extent of corruption, selfishness and greed outlined in the authors account of EHMs is quite overwhelming, nevertheless, this is balanced with lots of practical steps we can make to see lasting transformation.
The writing quality is average and at times the author borders on hubris, but overall, his message and mandate is clear and compelling. Worth the read for sure.

The book starts out slowly - becomes interesting in the middle WRT Saudi Arabia and Opec - perhaps because I was there flying and selling Awacs. Then it ends with preachy environmentalism.

I'm struck by the hypocrisy; Do as I say, not as I do, jetting around the world to preach environmentalism. John, meet Al Gore.

After John got his millions and wrought his environmental damage on a grand scale, he became an environmentalist. In the last two chapters, he preaches that the rest of us should eschew what made him rich and successful, using environmental and sustainable arguments. No surprise there. I guess that's the confessions part, and plays into the environmental wheelhouse. I'm guessing Sierra Club and NRDC et al promote this book.

An oddity is John's claim he was recruited by the NSA - an electronic surveillance agency - to work as a banker and promoter. I assume others smarter than I have researched the claim and found it true. But it's still unusual.

Some of the other 'facts, ' if true, are interesting and give insight into foreign relations, foreign aid, and banking.

Borrowing from a review of this book done by H. William Batt, Ph.D.: "Conspiracy arguments are always suspect since they typically have plausibility but no compelling proof."

"By reading Henry George's "Progress and Poverty" as well as the growing body of current literature in this tradition, and by then understanding classical concepts like freehold titles and economic rent, Perkins would be in a better position to appreciate how corporate and financial interests exert their control both conceptually and practically. As it stands, he never quite decides whether the problem arises from a faulty belief system or from the instrumental power of institutions. He doesn't really know where to point his finger. Consequently, his plea for greater economic justice and his wistful call for American citizens to reflect on their political and consumer choices is too fuzzy, and lacking any sounder programmatic direction. Still, the book serves an important purpose: it documents how control of democratic government has shifted from the electorate to the corporatocracy." Absolute must read for every American and the World Population for that matter, it will, I believe help each and everyone of them to understand how this world of ours works!!!!!! one has to take ones hat off, to John Perkins for casting aside his past actions and reversing his life and actions for the betterment of the human race in helping us all to understand how the presumptuous powerful and greedy individuals and globalist want to run this beautiful world of ours for their own well being, than for the betterment of all mankind. it brings to mind how the British Leaders, gloated and boasted that the Sun never set on the British Empire, while at home in the UK the General Populous lived (or tried to survive) in Abject poverty and most still do, sadly. It never really benefited the people only those rich and powerful. So very well done John Perkins, for showing us the real action that is being carried out by the so called leaders of this World. Keep up the good work.

5.0 out of 5 stars An eye opener of a book not only instructional but inspirational to the reader!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 8, 2021
This book for me, was an eye opener and every page were not only instructional but inspirational to the reader. This expose’ started early on with a term entitled: ‘corporatocracy’ - mainly international corporations, banks, rich and the powerful control them. Interestingly, J. Perkins did not use the other similar meaning terms like ‘Cryptocracy’ or ‘Deep State’ the latter term - a lot of us are familiar with nowadays. In a sense, this amazing book puts into perspective the true reality of global economics and the western type of neo-liberal system that tries all sorts of underhand skulduggery methods including corruption just to gain profit. Much of Perkins viewpoint expressed in the book tend to reflect the works covered by Noam Chomsky in previous decades.

Perkins uses the term: ‘death economy’ which is very apt in describing the destructive nature of global corporations’ policies that strive to push their unending pursuance of profit at all costs that ultimately means destroying many nation states and eliminating their democratically elected leaders. He (Perkins) cited many examples of this including the initial and perceived fears/threats to his own life when he thought of writing and publishing this book.

To summarise, a very enlightening book that explains how America really took over the world through economic methods of ‘giving’ foreign aid, trade, financial trickery, targeted business investment, espionage, assassination, bribery, intimidation and ultimately through military (force) invasion(s). Perkins sets the scene very early on and mentions what retired U.S. General Wesley Clark said about a US government classified memo saying: “invading 7 countries in 5 years” from which many can gather on what has already happened in the preceding decades and this clearly points that the “real enemies of this planet are not the Russians nor the ‘terrorist’ Muslims”. And, the real terrorists emerge from the shadows from the cryptocracy or the deep state into the spotlight.

Excellent book and a very high recommendation to buy this book that suggests the possible ways forward on what you can do and things to do - to challenge the status quo! The book should be read in conjunction with the 2005 book by R. W. Baker: “Capitalism’s Achilles Heel: Dirty Money”.
