You may not be aware of this – not consciously, at least – but you do not control what you eat. Every mouthful you take is informed by the subtle tweaking and nudging of a vast, complex, global system – one so intimately woven into everyday life that you hardly even know it's there. The food system is no longer simply a means of sustenance. It is one of the most successful, most innovative and most destructive industries on earth. It sustains us, but it is also killing us. Diet-related disease is now the biggest cause of preventable illness and death in the developed world – far worse than smoking. The environmental damage done by the food system is also changing climate patterns and degrading the earth, risking our food security. Few people know the workings of the food system better than Henry Dimbleby, founder of the Leon restaurant chain, government adviser and author of the radical National Food Strategy. In Ravenous, he takes us behind the scenes to reveal the mechanisms that act together to shape the modern diet – and therefore the world. He explains not just why the food system is leading us into disaster, but what can be done about it.

If you care about your health, your family's, this planet.......read it. Gives a very qualified understanding on what you eat, the impact, how it started and how big corporations are damaging and addicting you for their profit gains.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very important book

This book combines comment on a number of topics of immediate current interest; modern diet and the related obesity and health crisis; industrial farming and the damage it is doing to our environment. Effortlessly and engagingly Henry Dimbleby explains how these crises are interrelated. Incidentally, the book offers the the most accessible and convincing explanation of the way human generated green house gases are at the root of these problems. Ultimately however, Henry Dimbleby is optimistic and shows that there is a way forward, which can generate abundant good food, better physical and mental health, restored biodiversity and environment Too good to be true? I hope not. Everyone remotely interested in the topics mentioned should read this book. It's clearly written. It's interesting. You'll be better informed at the end of it. You'll make better decisions regarding your diet. You'll better understand what we must do if we are to protect the planet for coming generations to live well.

I found this book a fascinating read and it increased my understanding of what drives the junk food boom and diet related unhealthy population. It is frightening that making the necessary changes does not seem to be on the government agenda or if it is it is not a high enough priority. The link to changing our food production to make it more healthy and efficient with positive benefits for climate change targets was a revelation. It is reassuring and gives hope that there are solutions available, however we need to start lobbying our politicians to make the policy changes. We will be changing our diet to at least two meat free days a week and reducing our consumption of processed foods! Thank you Henry for a really excellent book.
