It's hard to find faults with the A53. I really just like everything about it.
TLDR - It's a great phone packed with features (Battery + Display + UI etc). You're getting value for money with this phone.
- Great UI. Honestly, people take this for granted but Samsung phones have a great UI.
- Awesome battery (5000mAh). With moderate use this phone is easily lasting a day and a half on an 85% charge (and that is with most of the bells and whistles turned on). I imagine you could probably get 3 - 4 days on a single charge if you really tried to save battery. It also charges really fast ~45 minutes to charge from 20% to 85%.
- The display is spot on (Super AMOLED 120 Hz). The only other modern phone that I have as a reference is the Iphone 13 mini and the display on the A53 blows it out of the water. I've been watching movies on it at night and it's a real pleasure. Even just reading the news in the mornings is so easy because of the display quality.
- Bixby is actually good now. I know Bixby use to be a meme at some point but it works really well and should be considered a worthwhile feature in its current state. It also comes with Google Assistant so you've still got that option but honestly if I had to have either Google or Samsung listening to me all day I'd rather it were Samsung.
- The sound quality is good (Dolby Atmos). I don't really listen to music through the phone speakers but I did play one song on them and they sound good to me (if you're an audiophile or this is a big feature for you get a second opinion on this). The microphone and speaker quality when making phone calls is great.
- This phone is a great value proposition. For reference, I bought a s6 in 2015/2016 for ~$900 (AUD). This phone is ~$700 (AUD) and it's feature set is much better than the s6. You're definitely getting much better value now than in the past. If you don't have a charger then you will need to add ~$30 (AUD) to the price to get a charger. Not a big deal IMO.
- People criticize this phone for losing the headphone jack but honestly who cares. Do people not realize that you can just go and buy a USB-C to headphone jack adapter and use that. IMO good riddance to the headphone jack, it's a waste of space.
- Great performance in texting, browsing and watching movies. I don't really use my phone for gaming so I can't really tell you if it's good for that. Honestly, just buy a console or better yet a PC if you want to game. Most mobile games are just trash money farms anyway and the few that aren't are difficult to enjoy on any touch screen device regardless of performance.
- The cameras are good. The only slight criticism I have is that there is a bit of delay between when you press the capture button on the camera and when it takes the picture. It doesn't let you take burst shots in 64MP mode or in 'low light conditions' so there really isn't an easy way to work around this delay. This isn't a huge deal for me but if the camera is an important feature for you then maybe go have a look at the camera in store before you buy it. The image quality is good , not flagship level but good enough for every use case that I've encountered.
- Long term support. The phone released on Andriod 12 so you are getting support until at least Andriod 16 and security updates for 5 years. This is a great feature if you plan to use the phone for a long time but maybe not so much if you replace your phone often.
- I'm happy with the build quality. I don't have any issues with the plastic body. Even when compare to the glass on the s6. However, the black phone in particular does show fingerprints very easily so I would recommend getting a case with the phone if you get it in black.
