To begin, I'll say that I'm happy with this purchase and would recommend it as a commuting bike to people who don't have too far of a commute. I bought this to commute to work, about 3 miles each way on mostly flat ground. I used to use (and still use) a regular bike for my commute but on the hotter more humid days I would show up kind of a sweaty mess and it wasn't professional, so I opted for an Ebike since parking would cost me about $900 a year. The trail I use is pretty flat and on a full charge, I can easily get to work and back at the higher speeds without worry about losing power. They've recently made a spare battery available for purchase, so if you have a longer commute or worry about losing power that could be an easy remedy for you.
As a PSA, when you get it and assemble it, don't just ride. Check the tire pressure and fill it up to within the PSI range listed on the sides of the tires because they don't come inflated and you could damage your tires (I assume the don't fully inflate them for shipping purposes). The bike was super easy to assemble (Maybe 10 minutes including removing the packaging).
Everything on the bike seems well made and solid except for a few things: The LED light on the front, the lock that keeps the battery in, and the horn. If you are going to be riding during low light, get a better headlight. The lock that keeps the battery in feels really cheap and I worry about using it often, and the horn isn't loud enough to give much of a warning to pedestrians. Another issue is that my brakes squeak when I use them, but it stops quickly with no problem.
On mode 3 the bike easily gets up to about 18mph with a full charge and that lasts about 20 minutes on mostly flat ground. After it gets to about a half a charge in mode 3 (about 20min), the bike will go about 15mph top speed. I've not fully discharged the battery, so I don't know what the top speed is with a really low charge and I don't know how long it will continue before losing power altogether. Switching to mode 1 it went about 10mph and made it 6 miles without me worrying about losing power on a half charge. Insofar as the pedals go, they are useless for creating momentum once you are over about 10mph. This isn't an issue for me since the whole point of getting the bike was so I wouldn't show up to work a mess. The throttle has cruise control, so if you hold it down for 5 seconds I will keep going and end when you hit the breaks. This was a feature I didn't know it had but very much enjoy.
I'm about 6' tall and weigh 175lbs, and the bike is a little small for me, but it isn't uncomfortable.
I did a lot of research and this is the best Ebike for the price. The things that sold me were the 350watt motor, the disk breaks and lithium battery. As I'm writing this review, no other Ebike comes close to this value with these features.
Finally, the bike is a lot of fun. I enjoy riding it and get a kick out of passing other bicyclists on what appears to be only a tiny foldable bike. One thing that improved my experience is that I started wearing goggles while I ride, so I wouldn't have to squint my eyes as much and could look around more.
Now for the part we don’t like but because this info wasn’t available when I was researching , I’d like to share:
The saddle HURTS my butt, so I’m planning to replace that with maybe a cruiser saddle
Folding and unfolding is easy, but it takes time to get used to it
Like I said, I got about 8-10 miles out of it before it needed life support
One thing I noticed is that the battery levels kept going up and down. It seemed like it was adjusting and compensating for which mode I was in and the condition of the street. When it was super super flat, I’d gain a bar.
The pedals are only really needed for inclines, otherwise it feels kinda silly as there are no gears.
It’s super mega easy to switch thru modes (3 total).
It takes about 4 seconds for the battery to register the throttle twist and ZOOOOOM
Pedal assist is still tricky for me as with a lot of other users too from what I can tell from reviews
Being close to 30 years old, I absolutely hate that “swagtron” is on the bike because it’s a silly name, but what are you gonna do lol
All in all, it’s a great bike. I purchased a replacement battery so that I can get back from where I went.
Riding is a lot of fun for a 54 year old man weighing under 130 lbs and you can achieve the 15.5 mile range on smooth roads with little incline throttle only on speed 1 which is 12.1mph. Definately takes a toll on the battery running speeds 2 and especially 3 but im not surprised and fine with it.
Now I bought the first one to try out and see if it was worth it as my intention was to ride with my wife as I'm really not that interested otherwise. Basically it's either both of us or neither.
So, I ordered a white one a few days later for her and it showed up with no issues. She weighs 88 lbs so if anything she would get more range than i.
So we go out riding for the first time and after about 7 miles on speed 1 an error code E30 pops up on the controller. No idea what it means because the manual has no information about the codes. Bike still works but its VERY annoying because it wont allow you to see any of the other information the display will show other than speed changes and the speed just shows whatever it happened to be at when the E30 popped up. The error came and went a few times and it wouldnt pop up immediately if you shut the controller off for awhile.
Looked up the code and theres a YouTube video where a guy kept saying it was popping up on him too and Swagtron told him it's a communication error between the motor and the controller. Cant be fixed on your own and would need to be sent back.
So, I initiated an Amazon return and ordered another one as there was no way I was sending Swagtron the bike back out of my own pocket something that was brand new and have to wait a month for it.
Got the next one and the same thing happened on the first ride (E30) plus an E25 code. No idea what that code is.
On top of that, the controller shut off on her in the middle of the ride so yup, have to send it back to Amazon.
Ordered the 3rd replacement that I received today and out of the box that showed no damage and was packaged perfect the front wheel was cocked to the side out of alignment. Not a scratch on it and I initially thought my eyes were playing tricks on me and it was the disc brake that was bent. Nope, the actual metal spoked wheel was crooked. Absolutely astonished by this as whoever assembled the bike had to see this issue and align the brake to fit.
So, now I call and complain to Amazon that I now have to send back the third bike in a row and order another replacement and they wouldnt even exchange it themselves for me:(
Had to initiate another return to pack a third one up and once again drive it to the ups store, order another one and wait another 5 days for another replacement.
So, the first one works fine so far after alignment and 3 have had to be returned and now awaiting a 4th hoping beyond hope that I can get one that just works.
I REALLY want another one to work as it's so worth it IF it does but its exhausting me. It's either get another that works or send the first one back too.
Swagtron is NOT easy to get ahold of and to have to pay out of pocket to send them a defective unit back under warranty is disgusting.
It's a beautiful bike and EVERYONE asks about it and wants one. We love them for the few miles they work......
