After a century of misunderstanding the differences between diet, weight control, and health, The Case for Keto revolutionizes how we think about healthy eating—from the best-selling author of Why We Get Fat and The Case Against Sugar.

Based on twenty years of investigative reporting and interviews with 100 practicing physicians who embrace the keto lifestyle as the best prescription for their patients' health, Gary Taubes gives us a manifesto for the twenty-first-century fight against obesity and diabetes.

For years, health organizations have preached the same rules for losing weight: restrict your calories, eat less, exercise more. So why doesn't it work for everyone? Taubes, whose seminal book
Good Calories, Bad Calories and cover stories for The New York Times Magazine changed the way we look at nutrition and health, sets the record straight.

The Case for Keto puts the ketogenic diet movement in the necessary historical and scientific perspective. It makes clear the vital misconceptions in how we've come to think about obesity and diet (no, people do not become fat simply because they eat too much; hormones play the critical role) and uses the collected clinical experience of the medical community to provide essential practical advice.

Taubes reveals why the established rules about eating healthy might be the wrong approach to weight loss for millions of people, and how low-carbohydrate, high-fat/ketogenic diets can help so many of us achieve and maintain a healthy weight
for life.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“Gary Taubes deserves a national science medal for helping to raise the critical question of why the food we eat is killing us. He hasn’t sat on the sidelines saying just do more of the same. As a result, his insightful reading of the medical literature offers new hope to people suffering from obesity.”—Kevin Schulman, M.D., Professor of Medicine, Stanford University

“In my 40 years as a nutrition professor, I've never run across a diet book that so clearly explains
how to follow a weight-loss diet and why it works.  In addition, Gary Taubes shows how continuing the Keto Diet contributes to good health for years to come.”—Janet C. King, Ph.D., Professor of the Graduate School, Department of Nutritional Sciences and Toxicology, University of California, Berkeley

“In
The Case for Keto Gary Taubes vigorously challenges the conventional view that low-fat, plant-based diets are healthy and that eating fats is risky, providing an historical context of the effectiveness of keto diets that goes back more than 150 years.  I thoroughly recommend the book to anyone who struggles with weight control.”—Lewis Cantley, director of the Meyer Cancer Center at Weill Cornell Medicine and New York Presbyterian Hospital

The Case for Keto is built on fundamental principles that will pass the test of time.  Taubes persuasively argues that reversing fat accumulation can be achieved without hunger through a high-fat, low-carb diet.  As a clinician treating such obesity-prone individuals with type 2 diabetes, I have repeatedly and reproducibly seen the diet work miracles for those who will embrace it.”—David M. Harlan, M.D., William & Doris Krupp Professor of Medicine, co-director, UMass Diabetes Center of Excellence

“For the last decade and a half, Gary Taubes has been the unrelenting Socrates of the diet composition dialogue, peppering the field, journalists, the general public, and experts alike to question their assumptions and ask what we really know. Like those of Socrates, Taubes’ questions do not always make others happy, but they need to be heard. We need to ask whether our presumed knowledge about diet, health, and weight is well-founded. Taubes may not provide all the answers, but his incisive questions cannot and should not be ignored.”
—David B. Allison, Ph.D, Distinguished Professor, Obesity Researcher, and Academic Dean

What should we eat? Gary Taubes provides the answer. Drawing on exhaustive research, and in clear language, he explains which foods are healthy for us, which foods are unhealthy—and why. He shows why obesity, diabetes, hypertension, and other chronic conditions are on the rise, and how we can intervene effectively. Gary Taubes’s work has changed everything about the way I eat.”—Gretchen Rubin, author of The Happiness Project

“In this outstanding book, Taubes presents a manifesto challenging the energy balance dietary dogma of the medical and nutritional authorities, along with a repudiation of Michael Pollan’s plant food principles.  A compelling case is made for low-carb, high-fat eating—towards ‘nutritional ketosis’—for people who fatten easily (most of us), while addressing the potential risk and unknowns.”
—Eric Topol, M.D., cardiologist and Professor of Molecular medicine at Scripps Research, and author of Deep Medicine

“Taubes blends science and clinical examples for a uniquely sound and honest explanation of a movement that has transformed the way we think and eat to improve our health.”
—Marty Makary, M.D., Johns Hopkins, and author of The Price We Pay

“If you have a weight problem, or you know someone who does, then
The Case for Keto is required reading. This is the book all health practitioners must read to understand obesity and diabetes and how to treat them.”—Kevin Fontaine, chair, Department of Health Behavior, University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Public Health

"
The Case for Keto is a uniquely thoughtful discussion of low-carb, ketogenic eating. It is critically important reading for anyone trying to control their weight, improve their health and rationally decide what they should eat."—Mitchell A. Lazar, M.D., director, Institute for Diabetes, Obesity, and Metabolism, University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine

“Gary Taubes’s book violates everything leading medical societies and governmental agencies espouse—but Taubes is right and they are wrong. Medicine, like life, is about risk and benefit. This book provides the best path
for most people who are overweight or obese to restore health.”—Orrin Devinsky, M.D., Professor of Neurology & Neuroscience, NYU School of Medicine

For me, this’d book is a follow-up to “Good Calories, Bad Calories.” The book has motivated me to go “full Keto.” I lot 80 pounds some years ago going low carb, and have put 20 back on. Taubes helped me organize an approach, after getting reminded by another text, “Brain Energy.”

I had expected to skim the portions that I was already familiar with -- the basic history of keto. Instead, I read it all -- because it was all presented with a new and impressive angle on the science, plus enough new information to keep me interested. (I have read probably 20 books on Keto, including Taubes" earlier works.)
Taubes presents a scathing indictment of government-sponsored scientific group-think. Luckily for the large portion of people in the world who are not naturally lean, opposing research is still being done and published, albeit ignored by the nutrition establishment. He also fairly presents opinions an all sides. Just as he presents the full range of low carb/keto life style options from Carnivore to Vegan.
I have done Keto in the past and am revisiting it now. I found that I am, like Taubes, one of the ones who cannot stray far from the Keto farm without gaining back the weight I have lost. Something I knew from my own experience that was true, but for me reading it in this form, really brought it home.
I also got a good review of how to do Keto and new ideas of how to make it work for me. I read the book primarily to give myself a "pep-talk" about getting back into the Keto lifestyle. I was so impressed with the overall presentation, that the "pep-talk" almost feels secondary to the wealth of information presented.
I would also recommend giving this book to family, friends and, perhaps most importantly, physicians. It is the most concise and intelligent argument for a Keto lifestyle I have read in the past 20 years.

I listen to Gary Taubes in podcasts and was looking forward to hearing a well-researched take on Keto. WARNING - If you feel the same way you'll be disappointed in this book - Even Gary admits the title was a compromise and the book is not so much about Keto.
That said... This book is a must-read for someone struggling with their weight or obesity. Gary understands the shame of being overweight and explains the metabolic factors that literally cause fat to want to be fed and how messages of the processed food industry, the FDA, and medical establishment emphasize a high-carb, low fat diet that makes the situation worse. Getting the body into ketosis through a lifestyle change that eliminates sugar, and replaces processed food carbs with healthy fats and vegetables leading to improved health with little to no effort. Gary advocates a simple approach just about anyone can follow without having to buy supplements or some kind of program.

In September of 2022, I decided that I will go low carb. Why ? Because I couldn’t bend to tie my shoelace. I had a really big belly and it was getting in the way.
So I eliminated all carbs 100%. Consumed fats and meat Of all kinds..
at first it was hard since the neuroglypenic signs would pop up every now and then. Cheese helped in these instances.
I’ve moved from 174 lbs to 157 by eating all the calories found in foods that does not contain carbohydrates.
I found Mr Taubes book on Kindle and I read it very carefully. The explanation provided, I had known for a while. But he offered it a different way.
My summary is:
Prevent the body from producing insulin by not eating starch. Amino acids can cause insulin production. But this requires energy and for me it doesn’t stop the body from making ketones though as explained in the book there are exception.
Starch and insulin are the main contributors to most illnesses.
How do I feel ?
Well most of my clothing can’t fit, and when you are fuelled by ketones you function like a Caterpillar machine
Your brain is clear and you literally see the pounds peel off without much effort
Lastly, there is always the temptation to eat carbs since it’s ubiquitous.. brave it. This requires will. Once you do this your body transforms itself.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must-Read for people on the Ketogenic Diet

This is an informative book regarding the physiology of the keto diet. I first read this book as a library loan but realize I need to have it to refer to (and high-light and underline). Taubes goes into detail regarding the human physiology and therefore how healthy this way of eating truly is. Excellent primer on the ketogenic diet!

Excellent Book..
Great insights...
Thoroughly researched and neatly explained..
Anyone interested in the subtle distinction in Human Metabolism shall read this book, to get their answers...
Author isn't a fanatic in that, he does not insist that Keto is for everyone..
However, he wants the mainstream nutritional authorities to understand that, neither is carb ...
